During a meeting commemorating the director’s centenary, actor Ranbir Kapoor shared personal stories about his grandfather, famed filmmaker Raj Kapoor.
Speaking with director Rahul Rawail, Kapoor paid a heartfelt homage to one of Indian cinema’s most significant artists. He remembered childhood memories of the famed filmmaker’s lighter side, such as Raj Kapoor gathering his grandchildren to sing the popular song “Awaara Hoon” from his 1951 film.
Beyond personal memories, Kapoor emphasized his grandfather’s dedication to social commentary. “If you watch ‘Awaara,’ it was based on casteism. ‘Shree 420’ was about greed and the impoverished,” he explained. This revelation demonstrated Raj Kapoor’s capacity to approach complicated social concerns through movies.
The discussion also underlined the filmmaker’s perseverance. Despite the commercial failure of “Mera Naam Joker” in 1970, which caused him financial hardship—even to the point of mortgaging his house—Raj Kapoor launched “Bobby” in 1973, starring entirely new talent.

Bollywood star Ranbir Kapoor shared personal memories and professional insights about his grandfather, pioneering Indian filmmaker Raj Kapoor, during a discussion with director Rahul Rawail at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa, where Kapoor’s centenary is being celebrated.
“My memories of him are very personal,” said Kapoor, recalling his grandfather who passed away when he was six. “He used to take us to his room, and he used to hide these caramel toffees in his fridge. He used to make us stand in a line – all the cousins, Kareena, Karishma, my sister, myself – and ask us to do ‘Salaam’ and to sing ‘Awaara Hoon’ [from “Awaara,” 1951].”
Discussing Raj Kapoor’s filmmaking, the younger Kapoor noted his grandfather’s ability to tackle varied social themes throughout his career. “If you see ‘Awaara,’ it was based on casteism. ‘Shree 420’ [1955] spoke about greed and the underprivileged. In his latter films,...

The previous episode of the effervescent show had Rohit Shetty and Ajay Devgan giving out such ‘yaarana’ vibes. They are simply brothers forever by being each other’s support system, and the episode was unapologetically real. The tenth episode has an unusual pairing of something not many have seen off the screen for years, even though both are great actors of their respective generations. Mother and son Sharmila Tagore and Saif Ali Khan grace the couch for the first time, giving an interview on a chat show as casual as this one. For all the Gen Zs out there, Sharmila Tagore is one of the most prolific actors in Indian cinema, having ruled Bengali and Hindi cinema for many decades. Her son Saif Ali Khan, who is now considered one of the most versatile actors in the Hindi industry, had a tumultuous start to his acting journey, which stabilized sometime in the 2000s.

Wedding Pullav which launches producer Shashi Ranjan's daughter Anushka was originally meant to be directed by Rahul Rawail who roped in his best friend Rishi Kapoor to make a very special appearance in this wedding comedy. But then Rawail had a fall-out with the producer and he marched out of the project. Ace cinematographer Binod Pradhan took over the directorial reins, leaving Rishi in a dilemma of loyalty. The jury has come to a decision. It's Chaitanya Tamhane's Marathi masterpiece Court that goes as India's official entry to the Oscars, beating other strong contenders including Neeraj Ghaywan's Masaan, Avinash Arun's Killa and Kabir Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Tamhane's evocative film gently and non-judgmentally questions the loopholes in the Indian legal system. While the film's intrinsic merits cannot be questioned, one of the jury members for the Oscar contender Rahul Rawail has gone on record to question the jury's chairperson Amol Palekar's competence. Rawail tweeted, "Just want to clarify that I am proud of Court and fully support its selection. I resigned from the Oscar jury because of Mr. Palekar's obnoxious behavior." Court's director Chaitanya Tamhane remained oblivious of the controversies. Says Tamhane, "It's still hard for me to believe that my film has been so warmly received the world over. The Indian jury to select India's official entry to the Oscars 2016, helmed by chairperson Amol Palekar, is all set to meet away from Bollywood and Mumbai in Hyderabad to decide on which of our films from 2015 goes to the Oscars . This is the second year in a row when Hyderabad has been chosen as the venue for the proceedings. According to sources Hyderabad is likely to remain the hub of Oscar activity on the coming years. "The jury to select the Indian entry to the Oscars is put under tremendous pressure in Mumbai to select a Bollywood film. This year too there is heavy lobbying in Mumbai for films like Vishal Bhardwaj's Haidar, Anurag Kashyap's Ugly, Raj Kumar Hirani's Pk and Omung Kumar's Mary Kom as Indian's Oscar entry. To avoid being 'Bollywoodized' the Oscar committee has moved from Mumbai to Hyderabad, far away from the madding crowd of lobbyists.

30 Years after he did Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ghayal and Rahul Rawail's Arjun, Sunny Deol continues to be the archetypal anti-establishment hero of the masses. Proof of this lies in the song that Sunny has been shooting along with 4 newcomers in the sequel to Ghayal. The song replicates the mood of the popular 'Mamaiyaa kero kero mama' number that Sunny Deol sang and danced to, on the streets of Mumbai with his co-stars Satyajeet and Raja Bundela in Arjun in 1985. Ahmed Khan, who has choreographed the new number in Ghayal Returns says, "The new song has the same feel as 'Kero mama' in Arjun. Except that Sunny is older and wiser. There are two young girls and two boys joining Sunny in the song and dance." The number is shot on a college campus. Sunny plays a professor who impels his students to fight crime and injustice. Ahmed was...

Rahul Rawail, the filmmaker who gifted Hindi cinema such precious actors as Sunny Deol (Betaab), Kajol (Bekhudi), Aishwarya Rai (Aur Pyar Ho Gaya) and Amrita Singh (Betaab) is all set to unleash more fresh talent in a new film that he says, he is starting in April 2014. Interestingly, Rawail who seemed to have thrown in his towel after directing the ill-received risque comedy Buddha Mar Gaya in 2007, has named his new love story after his 1981 blockbuster Love Story which launched the careers of Rajendra Kumar's son Kumar Gaurav and Vijayta Pandit. Halfway through that 1981 film, Rawail had a fall-out with producer Rajendra Kumar. Rawail's name did not appear in the credits of Love Story. Now is his chance to get his name as director into Love Story. Says Rahul, "I am directing another film called Love Story. It bears no resemblance to the old film of that title." Rahul...
