The Continental's 70s soundtrack sets the tone of the series, enhancing the disco-infused NYC setting. Winston's origin story is accompanied by iconic songs from the era, adding depth to the narrative. Music in The Continental differs from John Wick films, reflecting Winston's character and the show's distinct style.

Robert Plant has been a successful musician from the early days of Led Zeppelin to his work today, but even he sometimes feels insecure. When reflecting on the singing he did on early Led Zeppelin songs, Plant winced. He said his voice sounded so bad that he would have been better off just keeping his mouth shut. He revealed one song he found particularly painful to hear.

When guitarist Jimmy Page set out to form Led Zeppelin, he initially wanted Terry Reid as the lead singer. Reid turned him down and pointed him to another singer, Plant.
Plant was performing at a small venue for an even smaller crowd. While he might not have seemed promising at first, his vocals amazed Page.

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has announced a new solo album, Sweetzerland Manifesto Mkii, the follow-up to the first Sweetzerland Manifesto released back in 2018.
Ahead of the new album’s May 26th release date, Perry also shared the lead single “Fortunate One” featuring The Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson. The rollicking blues rocker is tangental to Robinson’s longtime band and solo work, and he sounds right at home over Perry’s licks and solos. Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert Deleo also plays on “Fortunate One,” continuing the Sweetzerland Manifesto tradition of Perry bringing in guest singers and musicians.
“I’m really excited to get this song out — it hadn’t been written when the first version of Sweetzerland Manifesto was released,” Perry commented via a press release. “My old friend Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes sang on it, he knocked it outta the park! We started it in L.A.

Robert Plant proved to be the perfect singer for Led Zeppelin. His powerful pipes served the group well on their heaviest songs, yet he could sing tactfully on the band’s delicate songs. Led Zeppelin proved to be the perfect band for Plant as he earned a surprising non-musical job that helped him live out a childhood fantasy.

Led Zeppelin burst onto the music scene in 1969, and Plant went along for the ride. It didn’t take him long to understand it would be a rocket ship ride. Plant realized Zep might be something special at one of the band’s first U.S. concerts.
He was somewhat lucky to earn a spot in the band. Founding guitarist Jimmy Page eyed another singer, Terry Reid, to be the frontman. Reid turned...

Ronnie Wood is an essential member of the Rolling Stones, completing the iconic roster of Keith Richards on guitar, Charlie Watts on drums, and Mick Jagger on lead vocals. However, Wood almost became a member of a different legendary band when his agent asked if he wanted to join what later became Led Zeppelin.

In 1966, guitarist Jimmy Page joined The Yardbirds alongside the late guitarist Jeff Beck. However, his time with the band was brief, as The Yardbirds broke up in 1968. Page saw this as an opportunity to bring in a new lineup with Peter Grant as the manager.
Young vocalist and composer Terry Reid was asked to join but declined and recommended the up-and-coming singer Robert Plant. Plant then suggested bringing on his childhood friend John Bonham as the drummer.

Notable session musician David Lindley, a multi-instrumentalist known for his prolific work and collaborations throughout the Seventies and Eighties, has died at age 78, Rolling Stone confirmed. No cause of death was given.
An active musician since the Sixties, Lindley was a popular session musician whose skillset when it came to playing string instruments like the fiddle and guitar made him a must-have collaborator for artists like Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Toto, Rod Stewart, and Joe Walsh.
“The loss of David Lindley is a huge one,” singer Jason Isbell wrote on Twitter.

“Firefly Lane” Season 2 has arrived, and with it comes another loaded lineup of signature songs for the seventies, eighties, nineties and early 2000s. Throughout the shifts between three separate timelines in Tully and Kate’s friendship, needle drops help distinguish which part of their lives we’re watching, especially when it gets confusing between the older versions of Kate Mularkey Ryan (Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl). Kristin Hannah’s 400+ page novel off of which the television show is based uses certain songs and lyrics to introduce the new decades, or parts of the book, like Abba’s “Dancing Queen,” Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield” and more.
Season 2 boasts two Whitney Houston songs — “I’m Every Woman” and “How Will I Know” — Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors,” The Knack’s “My Sharona,” Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” and “Closer to Fine” by The Indigo Girls.

Cleopatra Entertainment has announced that they will be giving Frost, a “chilly thriller” directed Brandon Slagle (Attack of the Unknown), a Digital and Blu-ray release on October 11th – and to help start building the hype, we’re proud to share the Exclusive first look at the film’s trailer! You can check it out in the embed above.
Scripted by Robert Thompson from a story by James Cullen Bressack, Frost centers on
a young woman and her father who have to fight for survival after being stranded on a remote mountainside during a storm.
The synopsis doesn’t mention (but you can see in the trailer) that the situation is made even scarier and more desperate by the fact that the young woman in the story also happens to be pregnant. The film stars Vernon Wells – who counts The Road Warrior and Commando among his 240+ screen acting credits – and Devanny Pinn,...

It's a cliché as old as the musical genre: If a filmmaker wishes to use a handy piece of cinematic shorthand in order to communicate that a character is a bad, scary, violence-prone person, then heavy metal will be played on the soundtrack.
Heavy metal as a descriptor first came into vogue in the mid-1970s to describe the sound of louder, "heavier" types of rock coming from bands like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. Throughout the '70s, bands like Motörhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Saxon would push the genre forward, earning it a generation of hardcore fans and no small amount of hand-wringing from concerned parents and uptight "moral majority" groups (a response that was intentionally sought). Like all popular genres, heavy metal eventually fractured into various movements and dominant aesthetics; The genre could now be said to include bands as far removed from one another as Stryper and Cradle of Filth.

By now, the formula for blown-out editions of landmark albums is set in archival stone. For your extra dollars, you’re handed an updated, sonically enhanced version of the original album, a smattering of alternate takes of its songs, maybe a few tracks that had been relegated to the vaults or a DVD with period footage. The boxes complement, rather than upend, the core record.
But in multiple beguiling ways, the 50th anniversary revisit of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Déjà Vu offers up a new twist. Released in time...

A few weeks ago, we published a Flashback post on the Best, a forgotten classic-rock supergroup that featured John Entwistle, Joe Walsh, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, and Keith Emerson. They toured Japan and Hawaii in 1990 with a set that mixed hit songs from all their careers, but the whole thing ended after just five shows.
Fronting the band was Canadian singer Rick Livingstone, who we unfairly called the “weak link.” Upon further viewing of their September 26th, 1990, set at Yokohama Arena, it’s clear that he did as well as anyone...

Chris Cornell’s estate has surprise-released a new posthumous album of covers, No One Sings Like You Anymore.
Cornell recorded the album in 2016, playing all the instruments, while Brendan O’Brien produced and mixed it. The 10-song track list comprises songs by artists that inspired Cornell, and the record marks his last fully completed solo album before his death in 2017.

Joe Perry recruits Extreme singer Gary Cherone on the Aerosmith guitarist’s bluesy new rocker “Quake,” a bonus track from the soon-to-be-released vinyl version of Perry’s 2018 solo LP Sweetzerland Manifesto. The single is also available on digital music services.
The “Quake” video, directed by the guitarist’s son Roman Perry, sees Perry performing the new song with just a guitar and amp as the “Quake” lyrics unfold around him. A dancing couple also adds some rhythm to the quasi-lyric video.

Psychic Temple is another name for Chris Schlarb, a self-styled cult leader from Long Beach, California, who’s really just a wickedly skilled producer, songwriter and musician. His Bandcamp page is full of sweet, strange sounds on the outskirts of folk-rock, jazz and psychedelia, and even further out than that — check his fantastic 2016 remake of Brian Eno’s Music for Airports (complete with a new proletarian B-side, “Music for Bus Stops”).

On September 7th, 1968, Led Zeppelin played their first live show ever in, of all places, a converted gym in Gladsaxe, Denmark. They weren’t yet billed under their soon-to-be world-famous name but were instead performing under the guise of the New Yardbirds, a relaunch of the British Invasion blues rockers who’d imploded just months before. The only known quantity among this new lineup was guitarist Jimmy Page, who’d funded the tour through Scandinavia out of his own pocket, but that was enough draw a young crowd to the venue,...

Sometime during the week of Aug. 12, 1968, the band that would take over the world as Led Zeppelin held its first rehearsal in a small room in London.
The preceding May, Yardbirds guitarist and session veteran Jimmy Page found himself without a band when the other three members — who’d seen some success since the group first formed in 1963, but had fallen out of fashion — abruptly quit. With a Scandinavian tour already booked, Page and manager Peter Grant united bassist/keyboardist and fellow sessioneer John Paul Jones (with whom he’d performed on songs by Donovan and others) with two young musicians from the British Midlands, singer Robert Plant and drummer John Bonham, both 20, who’d performed together in a group called Band of Joy.
As the new quartet launched into the R&B chestnut “Train Kept A’Rollin’,” a Yardbirds live staple that the group had recorded in 1965, the chemistry,...

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry recruited Cheap Trick singer Robin Zander, Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo and Stp bassist Robert DeLeo for a rattling live version of “Aye, Aye, Aye” filmed at L.A.’s Roxy Theatre in January.
Perry commands the track with a handful of bluesy riffs and solos, and Zander pushes his vocal range by howling the main hook. Drummer David Goodstein and keyboardist Buck Johnson (Aerosmith) also accompanied Perry on the song, a highlight from his sixth solo LP, the January-issued Sweetzerland Manifesto.

Kermit and the gang hit the shelves last week with the release of James Bobbins’ The Muppets, and this week brings Daniel Radcliffe in his first feature following Harry Potter in James Watkins’ The Woman in Black, which topped the UK box office three weeks in a row back in February, and has been one of 2012’s biggest earners internationally.
Not too bad a follow-up, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Surprisingly few new titles coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week. Because who can resist Studio Ghibli?
