Currently there is only one movie where Kylie Minogue is murdered by a masked madman, and then former Brat Packer Molly Ringwald swoops in to save the day. Of course that movie is none other than the horror obscurity Cut (2000). This hidden gem from Down Under popped up during the first slasher revival, which is a large reason as to why many critics deemed Kimble Rendall’s debut derivative. Not everyone felt this way, though; fans like myself saw past the timely surface qualities and found a movie that not only commented on slashers but also championed their existence. This was a rare sight at a time when the disparaging of horror was both trendy and excessive.
It would be something of a mistake to assume Cut is another mere copycat of Scream (1996). The inspiration for Rendall and writer Dave Warner’s movie is clear, yet the overall execution is rather different.

For as long as there have been films, there have been filmmakers attempting to enhance the theatrical experience through the use of gimmicks. From the red-eyed skeletons of William Castle to the “odorama” cards of John Waters’ Polyester, gimmicks are the puns of the filmmaking world: memorable and effective in small quantities, but annoying when overused.
That’s why I get why so many people reject 3D cinema. After all, modern theater screens ended up becoming oversaturated with lazily post-converted cash-grabs rather than movies that were shot on actual stereoscopic cameras. However, having just recently fixed my own aging 3D TV and binge-watched dozens of gimmicky genre films, I’m pleased to say that there are a surprising number of fun 3D experiences beyond the usual suspects.
With that in mind, here’s a list recommending six underrated horror movies that were shot in 3D!

Killer shark movies can succeed by embracing the ridiculousness of the genre, like Sharknado and The Meg. Some killer shark movies take a more realistic approach to create suspense, but can still be successful despite potential pitfalls. There are a variety of killer shark movies, each with their own unique elements and varying levels of success.
When Jaws broke records with its killer-shark-meets-tasty-swimmers premise, Hollywood quickly realized that there was big money to be made from shark movies. In the years since 1975, dozens of filmmakers have tried jumping on the bandwagon – either by ripping off Jaws' shark element with another much-maligned animal, or just transposing the film's central setup to a new setting. Predictably, some efforts have been more successful than others.

After her brother Luke (Chun) disappears on an expedition, scientist Jia (Li) goes in search of him with the aid of CEO Mason Kitteridge (Grammer) and paramedic Ridley (Lutz). Their quest leads them to an underground tomb, which houses an ancient Chinese emperor from 200 BC, and sees them battling hordes of giant spiders as they endeavour to find Luke and make it out of the deadly tomb alive.
After debuting in China cinemas at the beginning of the year, scoring $6 million on its opening weekend, this Chinese-Australian co-production goes direct to DVD in the UK, placing it alongside its China-financed brethren such as Lost in the Pacific and Skiptrace, whereas you can clearly tell the filmmakers were looking for...

You may know him as Hercules, Emmett Cullen, or even Tarzan, but recently actor Kellan Lutz has been bringing other memorable characters to life in a string of intriguingly imaginative movies. After playing Sy Lombrok in the ambitious sci-fi film The Osiris Child, Lutz channels his inner Indiana Jones for the spider-centric 7 Guardians of the Tomb. With the adventure horror movie out now in theaters and on VOD and Digital HD platforms via Gravitas Ventures, we recently caught up with Lutz to discuss reteaming with Kelsey Grammer after working together on The Expendables 3, experiencing spider pranks on set, and his dislike of cockroaches.
Like your character in 7 Guardians of the Tomb, I'm not exactly fond of spiders, so I could relate to a lot in this movie. I found it intriguing that you were playing this Indiana Jones-type character with a haunted past. When you first got the script,...

Writer/director Kimble Rendall has the unique ability of taking ridiculous premises and turning out a pretty enjoyable movie. That was definitely the case with Bait which saw a group of people locked in a supermarket with great white sharks, and it's also the case with his latest project 7 Guardians of the Tomb which falls somewhere between an Indiana Jones adventure and Arachnophobia.
The movie stars Binbing Li as Jia, a woman who takes off to China along with family friend Mason (Kelsey Grammer) who has his own ulterior agenda, in search of her brother Luke who has disappeared after discovering the well preserved mummy of a Chinese emperor dating back to 200Bc. Once on the ground, Jia and Mason are joined by a team of experts including Jack Ridley (Kellan Lutz),...

With an ensemble cast of Zhang Ziyi, Huang Xiaoming, Chen Chusheng, Chang Chen and Wang Leehom, the film covers four generations of Tsinghua University students over a century. It’s originally planned for the 100th anniversary of Beijing’s Tsinghua University in 2011.

A group of filmmakers today asked Art Minister Senator George Brandis to urgently address several issues which they believe have reduced the efficiency and effectiveness of Screen Australia.

Gillian Armstrong, Fred Schepisi and Kimble Rendall were among the group that met with Brandis after he gave the opening speech at the Australian Directors Guild conference in Sydney.
In a debrief for If, Armstrong and Schepisi stressed they told the minister they did not want to be seen as a .bunch of whingers,. thus avoiding the negativity which has been directed at Screen Australia in recent years.
Armstrong said she told Brandis she believes Screen Australia has gone into a self-protection phase marked by .too many shut doors and red tape..She was critical of a number of policies...

The follow-up to the shark-in-a-flooded -supermarket saga previously known as Bait 2 has been retitled Deep Water.

★☆☆☆☆ It was perhaps foolish to think that Bait (2012) might recall the raw menace of Stephen Spielberg's Jaws (1975) or Joe Dante's B-movie classic Piranha (1978). But Kimble Rendall's toothless horror is nothing of anything really: an underwater travesty which takes itself far too seriously and comes nowhere close to making the slightest contribution to the genre. Rendall has presumably lured the cast from 90210 to star in his film as a group of air-headed teens and shoppers, from Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga) to Julian McMahon, find themselves trapped inside a supermarket following a devastating tsunami.
While the clean-up on aisle five gets underway, the hapless Ozzies soon realise they aren't alone - a great white shark isn't satisfied with the reduced-to-clear items and is on the prowl for some flesh. If the team behind the Scary Movie franchise made a Jaws spoof, this is what it would look like.

Rebellion (15)
(Mathieu Kassovitz, 2011, Fra) Mathieu Kassovitz, Iabe Lapacas, Malik Zidi. 135 mins
Working with a real-life 1980s incident in New Caledonia (not dissimilar to a French Falklands), Kassovitz crafts a thoughtful thriller with no heroes, only good intentions compromised by colonialist mistrust and distant politics. His negotiator is set between a hair-triggered French military and separatist rebels, but with an election back home, not everyone wants a peaceful outcome.
Promised Land (15)
(Gus Van Sant, 2012, Us/UAE) Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Frances McDormand. 107 mins
With fracking as the central concern, this finds it hard to avoid being an "issue movie", but there's some human drama to it. Damon's gas agent comes to an archetypal small town with a buyout in mind, but the locals and their country ways get to him.

For the tsunami has brought unwanted visitors up from the depths. Not only must they overcome the threat of drowning and the psycho robber in their midst, but also a hazard far more deadly and bloodthirsty – a pack of hungry sharks.

An overly early piece of teaser art for Aussie filmmaker Kimble Rendall's latest project 'The Nest 3D' has hit the Web(!). He's switched sharks for spiders in this new survival flick where a group of arachnid fodder avoid approaching swarms of Funnel web spiders whilst on a rescue mission in China. Rendall was responsible for last years supermarket shark attack flick 'Bait 3D' which starred Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson, Phoebe Tonkin and Julian McMahon. Darclight Films will produce the project which Rendall will helm. Interestingly enough the first piece of teaser art from shark sequel 'Bait 2 3D' has arrived today which we'll post up shortly. Rendall, however, will not be involved with the follow-up....

In spite of Aussie director Kimble Rendall switching sharks for spiders in the newly announced 3D horror flick 'The Nest 3D' his supermarket based shark attack movie 'Bait 3D' is still being sequelised. Announced a few months back the second helping of shark-based shennanigans is yet to be determined yet alone score a director or indeed cast but for now we can take a gander at the first piece of teaser art from the project, courtesy of Dread Central. The next installment will revolve around an unexpected tsunami hitting the streets of La bringing a 15-foot Great White Shark along with it. Which sounds annoyingly close to the plot of Anthony C. Ferrante's 'Dark Skies' (title Tbc) with Tara Reid ('American Pie') which sees a flood hit La and subsequent shark attacks occurring all round town. The follow-up will come from Darclight Films, whom have...
