- Rarely displayed his physique in "beefcake" scenes. However, his bare chest can be seen in 1956's Away All Boats (1956) as he sits up in bed while having his injured leg bandaged, and again in Baron of Broken Lance (1959) (in which, as a newlywed on a wagon train, he sits at the back end of a covered wagon.

- He and wife Molly Sinclair have a son, Eric, and a daughter, Carrie, who was named after the movie Carrie (1952). A son, Robert, died shortly after birth in 1964.
