- Athletic German actor, usually seen as rugged characters in outdoor action films of the 1930's and 40's. He was discovered for films by fellow Bavarian Sepp Allgeier, having previously worked as a police radio operator. Rist was also a cross-country and jump skiing champion. Quite the adventurer in real life, Rist was most at home filming in far-flung and exotic locations around the world. He was married to the actress Carla Rust.

- He remained true to the nature movies after the war and took part in many movies with a regional background.
- In the 30's and 40's followed other successful production where he normally impersonated the robust nature-boy, so in "Die Reiter von Deutsch-Ostafrika" (1933), "Die Geierwally" (1940), "Kohlhiesels Töchter" (1943) and "Titanic" (1943).
- After the movies "Schloss Hubertus" (1973) and "Der Jäger von Fall" (1974) he retired from the film business.
- In WW1 he served in the Imperial German Navy.
- Before he started his film career he worked as an alpinist and was a talented skier. So it didn't surprise that he made his film debut with Arnold Fanck's movie "Stürme über dem Mont Blanc" (1930) at Leni Riefenstahl's side.
- In the 60's he only appeared seldom in front of the camera, among others in "Drei Mann in einem Boot" (1961). Besides he also took part in two episodes of the successful criminal serial "Der Kommissar" in 1969.
