To Sir, With Love (1967) is a classroom drama set in London’s working-class East End during the swinging 1960s. It’s a well-scripted, well-acted, and well-directed film of the “good teacher vs unruly students” subgenre. But, more than anything else, To Sir, With Love is a Sidney Poitier film. It’s Poitier’s persona and charisma, his decency and humanity, that shine through in every scene. And, it’s Poitier at the apex of his acting career—In the Heat of the Night and Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner were also released that same year. The film has aged surprisingly well, and is still enjoyable to watch. But it’s as an artifact of the Sidney Poitier oeuvre...

This thinking man’s epic got left behind with the demise of Road Show movies, which is a shame. A beautifully made, uncompromised story of warring 17th century Germany, it plays like a fine epic, with great performances. Audiences didn’t want to see Michael Caine playing this kind of character in a costume drama that wasn’t glorious escapism. Everybody’s good — it’s a great picture for Omar Sharif and the underappreciated Florinda Bolkan. The (originally) 70mm cinematography looked incredibly good in 1971.

The first trailer for Morbius arrived yesterday and the internet sort of exploded with the revelation of who was turning up in the movie. The final scene of the first look at Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff featured a surprise cameo from Michael Keaton, reprising his role as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The short clip sees Morbius, presumably on the run from the law, passing Adrian Toomes in an alleyway. “Michael Morbius,” says Keaton’s familiar voice, before he’s revealed in the flesh. “Got tired of the whole good guy thing, huh? What’s up, Doc?”
This cameo is significant in so many ways, from confirming that Sony’s universe is one and the same as the McU to potentially setting up the formation of the Sinister Six in a future movie. Here’s one you might have overlooked, though: it unites Batman and the Joker. Keaton, of course,...
