Exclusive: October is Jim “Kitty” Kaat’s time of year. Not only did the southpaw pitch in the World Series three times – winning a ring with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982 – but he became a great broadcaster, covering the MLB playoffs for ESPN, as well as serving as an announcer for the Yankees and later the Minnesota Twins.
This October, there’s more news about the 85-year-old Hall of Famer. A documentary about him, Kitty to Cooperstown, has been acquired by Gravitas Ventures, a deal covering U.S. and Canadian distribution rights.
Kitty to Cooperstown, directed by Nick Hagen, “delves deep into the career and personal journey of Jim Kaat, capturing his path to Cooperstown, the challenges he faced, and his enduring legacy in the sport of baseball,” according to a release. “Kaat, who has left an indelible mark on the game, is celebrated not only for his remarkable pitching...

Presidential nominees, they’re just like us … sort of. That’s what “The Daily Show” occasional host and senior correspondent Michael Kosta discovered when Republican nominee Donald Trump posted on Truth Social rather than paying attention to his own vice president pick’s debate.
“The Great Pete Rose just died. He was one of the most magnificent baseball players ever to play the game,” Trump posted on Truth Social during Jd Vance’s debate with Tim Walz. “He paid the price! Major League Baseball should have allowed him into the Hall of Fame many years ago. Do it now, before his funeral!”
“Look, I want to rag on Trump, but this is why he’s so relatable. Even when it’s his vice president, he can’t watch the VP debate without looking at his phone like, ‘Let me see what’s on ESPN,'” Kosta said during Wednesday’s opening monologue.

Pete Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader, died of natural causes this week at the age of 83. He was one of the greatest baseball players in history, and his stats back that up: three World Series titles, 17 All-Star appearances, and a record-breaking 4,256 hits. His moniker on the field was Charlie Hustle, and he was one of the most well-known and recognizable players in the history of the sport. But Rose is perhaps best known by the public for what he did off the field: He bet on baseball, including on his own team.

Updated, writethru: Overall, the lone 2024 Vice Presidential debate Tuesday was a polite affair, as both candidates suggested that there was common ground.
Gov. Tim Walz (D-Mn), running mate of Dem candidate Kamala Harris, drove home the civility of the debate when, as the event neared its conclusion, he admitted, “I’ve enjoyed tonight’s debate, and there was a lot of commonalities here, and I’m sympathetic to misspeaking on things, and I think I might have with the senator.”
“Me too, man,” Sen. J.D. Vance (R-oh), Donald Trump’s running mate. interjected.
It’s hard to think of such a moment in last month’s Harris-Trump match up, and it is perhaps a function of Walz’s and Vance’s backgrounds in the Midwest.
At a point earlier in the debate, during a discussion about gun violence, Walz noted that his 17-year-old son had witnessed a shooting at...

Pete Rose may have been Major League Baseball’s career hits leader but he’ll never make the game’s Hall of Fame. Rose, who died yesterday at 83, blew that chance by gambling on the game he loved. Many believed that if Rose were more contrite, if he’d taken the allegations more seriously, then the sport could have eventually forgiven him. But that wasn’t Rose, who spent his golden years signing autographs outside of Las Vegas casinos and joking about gambling with David Letterman.
On his 2006 appearance on Late Show, Rose claimed he still watched three games a day. With all that knowledge, Letterman said, perhaps the Hit King could provide insights into the upcoming playoff matchups. “Who do you like?”
“You sound like you're betting on baseball,” Rose replied with a devilish grin. The crowd applauded as Rose thumbed his nose at his own sullied reputation.

Pete Rose, regarded as one of the greatest players in Major League Baseball history but banned permanently from the Baseball Hall of Fame over gambling, died Monday. He was 83.
Nicknamed “Charlie Hustle,” a moniker originally meant as an insult that he adopted proudly, he was at the time of his death still the all-time MLB leader in hits with 4,256, games played with 3,562, at-bats with 14,053, singles with 3,215 and outs with 10,328. He also won the league’s Gold Glove award twice (in 1969 and 1970), and put in 17 All-Star appearances in five different positions, another league record.
The Cincinnati native, born April 14, 1941, showed talent in multiple sports, focusing on baseball when his small height and build kept him out of varsity football. He started playing minor league baseball while still in high school — he repeated his senior year — and was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1963, where he would go on to spend the majority of his career.

Pete Rose was a baseball legend unlike any other. He still holds the record for most career hits of any player in Major League Baseball history, an astonishing 4,256 over 24 seasons. But Rose’s story involved both dazzling success on the field and a dramatic fall from grace. After years of speculation, Rose was ultimately banned for life in 1989 for betting on baseball while both a player and manager, making him the only star ever exiled permanently from the sport for gambling.
The four-part documentary series Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose aims to capture the entire scope of Rose’s epic tale. Using interviews with the man himself as well as former teammates, analysts delve into Rose’s playing career highlights and what drove him to become the consummate winner with a relentless work ethic. But the series also traces Rose’s well-known addictions to gambling and his denials...

Documentarian Mark Monroe shared his experience as director of the new Pete Rose documentary, Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose in his new uInterview.
Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose traces the ascent and subsequent downfall that defined Rose, a star baseball player. In 1989, Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader, Rose, was issued a lifetime ban for his involvement in betting on the sport.
The documentary draws from candid interviews and insightful commentary provided by Rose himself, who desires redemption, although is seemingly hesitant to fully confront the gravity of his transgressions. The series examination of Rose’s life and career serves as a cautionary tale for the audience.

Monroe examined the question of what make Rose such a great liar.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio review for the doc series “Charlie Hustle & the Matter of Pete Rose,” about the rise and bitter fall of the major league legend, the MLB’s all-time hits leader, only to be banned from the sport because of gambling. Streaming on Max and on HBO since July 24th.
Television Rating: 5.0/5.0
The theme of this thorough four-part documentary is basically, should baseball’s all-time hits leader have his ban lifted and be in the Hall of Fame? Given his first denial in that late 1980s gambling scandal, then confessing to it much later, and his proclivity for seemingly not knowing how to tell the truth, the jury on the reinstatement and Hall of Fame question … his colleagues and the baseball media … are given ample space to debate the issue, including the 83-year-old still-living legend himself.

I hope you’ve stretched and are well hydrated, because you’re going to need it for the marathon of TV that lies ahead. Friday marks the official beginning of the 2024 Paris Olympics, which means we’ve got more than two weeks of impressive physical feats across 32 sports and 45 disciplines that will inspire you while putting your athletic prowess to shame.
It all begins with the opening ceremony, which for the first time in history is taking place outside of a stadium. The parade of athletes that is the centerpiece of the event will occur on the Seine, with each nation’s delegates having their own boat. It is unclear whether the size of the watercraft is determined by the size of the delegation, but it would probably be funnier that way. LeBron James and Coco Gauff are the flag bearers for the United States.

Conventional wisdom has always said that if Pete Rose had just been more candid and contrite when allegations of sports betting surfaced, his punishment would have been less severe and, after a few years of public penance and “recovery” from his addiction, he would have been reinstated to general eligibility, added to the Hall of Fame ballot and voted into Cooperstown. National nightmare concluded.
That is not who Pete Rose is, nor who he’s ever been.
As it stands, bringing up the all-time hit king’s name and Hall of Fame candidacy with a passionate baseball fan of a certain age — my own introduction to baseball fandom coincided directly with Rose’s quest to pass Ty Cobb’s hallowed record — is a good way to start a fight. (I go back and forth between, “Yes, he belongs in Cooperstown, but with the biggest disclaimer imaginable on his plaque” and “Nope,...

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred claims his sport didn’t want sports betting outside of Nevada.
In an interview with The Dallas Morning News ahead of the All-Star Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Manfred said pro baseball opposed the overturning of the 2018 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that restricted legalized wagering to Nevada.
Baseball has long been wary of gambling affecting the game’s integrity. The sport suffered gambling incidents as far back as 1919, when players on the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing World Series games. More recently, the sport saw gambling incidents result in a lifetime ban of all-time hits leader Pete Rose, and a murky scandal involving Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers and his interpreter.
“Once you had the Supreme Court decision, I don’t see it going backward,” said Manfred.
Now, 38 states and Washington, D.C. have regulated sports betting.

Major League Baseball icon Pete Rose, focus of a new HBO documentary series, says the gambling scandal that got him banned from the game cost him dearly.
“You have to understand one thing, ladies and gentlemen,” Rose said at a Q&A after the premiere of episode 1 of Charlie Hustle & The Matter of Pete Rose, “gambling cost me a hundred million [dollars]. That’s what I’d have made in baseball if I hadn’t got suspended.”
In 1989, Rose was managing the Cincinnati Reds when Major League Baseball investigated claims he had wagered bets on MLB games, including his own team’s. Bart Giamatti (father of actor Paul Giamatti), then-Baseball Commissioner, issued a lifetime ban from baseball on Rose. That has kept Rose out of the Hall of Fame, even though he is baseball’s all-time hit leader and holder of many other MLB records, including games played and plate appearances.

In what could have easily been the next season of “American Crime Story,” Lionsgate Television is diving into the gambling scandal that’s rocked Major League Baseball since March.
Lionsgate is developing a scripted series about how Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese superstar of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, became the subject of massive fraud and theft at the hands of his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Just days ago, Mizuhara agreed to plead guilty to accusations he stole almost $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts.

The gambling scandal surrounding LA Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter is already getting the TV series treatment.
Lionsgate Television is in early development on a series focused on the scandal. No writer or network is currently attached to the project, but Scott Delman and Albert Chen are both attached to produce. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television, while Bryan Weiser negotiated the deal.
Ohtani made headlines the world over when he signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The star pitcher and designated hitter had for years been working with interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, but just one day into the 2024 MLB season, it was revealed that Mizuhara had stolen nearly $17 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. He was immediately fired and later turned himself in to federal authorities. It was just reported that he has plead guilty to bank and tax fraud charges.

Greg Gutfeld and the guests of his namesake Fox News late night show took to the woodshed an opinion piece published Sunday in USA Today, spending the entire 13-minute “Gutfeld!” opening segment Tuesday night shredding sports writer Nancy Armour’s 800-word column about transgender athletes.
Armour’s piece called the views of ESPN reporter and “Sunday NFL Countdown” host Sam Ponder on transgender women and girls in sports “bigotry.” Ponder had recently publicly sided with Riley Gaines, the former college swimmer leading a campaign against transgender women and girls’ participation in sports at all levels.
Gutfeld himself kicked off the kicking, calling Armour “ghastly,” “godawful,” “riding in on her broomstick” and a “hack,” and suggested that USA Today is “the official doormat for Americans staying at low-priced hotels.”
Then things got mean.

“Home Alone” and “Better Call Saul” actor Devin Ratray, who is already facing domestic assault charges in Oklahoma, has been accused of raping a woman in his New York City apartment in 2017.
According to CNN, a woman named Lisa Smith has come forward with the accusation — and to complain that New York Police Department detectives spent time gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses five years ago — and then abandoned the case without action or explanation.
The NYPD repeatedly declined to comment to TheWrap on whether there is an active investigation into Ratray.
Ratray, who played Macaulay Culkin’s “bully” older brother in the first two “Home Alone” movies, has never been charged in the New York case. He did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment, but denied the rape allegation in a phone call to CNN.

Pete Rose declined to answer two reporters’ questions today about his relationship with an alleged underage girl in his first return to Philadelphia since August 1989.
Rose was present as the team celebrated the Phillies’ 1980 World Series championship team and other former players.
The incidents in question first surfaced in 2017. A woman who has remained unidentified said Rose, then a member of the Cincinnati Reds, initiated a relationship with her in 1973, when she was age 14 and 15. They later allegedly had sexual encounters in Cincinnati that lasted several years. She also alleged Rose met her in locations outside Ohio for sex.
At the time, Rose was in his mid-30s and was married with two children.
Rose’s lawyer had said the woman’s claims are unverified. Rose said in 2017 that he did have a relationship with the woman, but he said it started when she was 16. He also said they never had sex outside Ohio,...
