Image
Exclusive: In the first of three roundtables featuring this year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Casting, Deadline gathered Jeanie Bacharach (The Bear), Linda Lowy (Hacks), Destiny Lilly (Only Murders in the Building), Brett Benner (Shrinking) and Melissa Kostenbauder (The Studio) to talk about self tapes, landing the joke, and the challenges that come with preparing the next generation of casting directors.

The nominees, who each had to submit a 30-minute composition reel from the season to showcase their work, also explained how they judge their peers and what they were most proud of accomplishing on their respective shows.

Deadline: This casting category encompasses the best comedies on television right now. How do you decide which show is more awards worthy than the other?

Destiny Lilly: Fun fact: we actually can’t vote for ourselves. We are not allowed to vote in the category we’re nominated in. People just...

Kumail Nanjiani Digs Into His ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Only Murders’ Double Act
Image
By pure coincidence, Kumail Nanjiani appeared in two comedies this season in which quirky folks solve a regional murder. In Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” the two-time Emmy nominee plays a supporting role as Rudy “Christmas Guy” Thurber, a furtive resident of the Arconia building who wears garish holiday sweaters and plays up his year-round yuletide obsession on social media.

In “Poker Face,” he guest-stars as Gator Joe, a Florida policeman and influencer with a pet alligator who becomes the target of a rival cop (Gaby Hoffmann). TheWrap spoke with the busy actor about visiting comedy Rushmore and why “Columbo” inspired him to take on these fun guest spots.

A Legendary SoHo Diner Has Quietly Starred In Some Major Movies
Image
New York is known for its famous on screen eateries like Tom's Restaurant in "Seinfeld" or Katz's Delicatessen in "When Harry Met Sally" (which appears in the scene featuring that famous punchline), but rarely has a diner appeared as frequently in film and television as the Moondance Diner. Located on the corner of Sixth Avenue between Grand Street and Canal Street in the New York neighborhood of SoHo (South of Houston Street), the Moondance Diner was a railroad car-style diner built in 1933 made of shiny chrome. It had an adorable spinning crescent moon sign on top and shimmering glitter around its logo. On the inside, it had laminate tables squeezed next to shiny blue vinyl stools in front of a counter.

The diner's cartoony and 20th-century Americana aesthetic stood out against the surrounding brick apartment facades and other historic buildings, which made it really pop on screen. In addition to its motion picture appearances,...

Anjelica Huston Was ‘Depressed’ Starring in ‘Smash’: I Didn’t ‘Have a Good Time Making It’
Image
Anjelica Huston doesn’t quite regret starring in fan favorite, albeit short lived, NBC musical series “Smash,” but she is detailing her dismay while making the series. Huston told People while promoting BritBox limited series “Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero” that she didn’t “feel very prized” in her “Smash” role as fictional Broadway producer Eileen Rand.

“I wasn’t very happy when I was on that show,” Huston said. “I was living in New York and I wasn’t very happy living in New York for the obvious reasons. It was a cold winter, and I didn’t feel very prized in that role. I was a bit depressed by it. It was hard really; I didn’t really have a good time making it.”

“Smash” starred Katherine McPhee and Megan Hilty as two actresses vying to portray Marilyn Monroe in a fictional stage musical called “Bombshell.” Debra Messing...

How ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4 Found Its Hollywood Doppelganger Trio
Image
After putting on a Broadway show last season, “Only Murders in the Building” raised the creative bar in Season 4 with a love letter to Hollywood film—and with it came a star-studded ensemble.

The season finds Paramount Pictures filming a movie adaptation of the podcast featuring Steve Martin’s Charles-Haden Savage, Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam and Selena Gomez’s Mabel Mora, with that trio portrayed on screen by Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria.

“The first conversation was, what is the movie version going to be like? Where is the humor going to come from? And obviously casting those people was hugely important to set the joke up,” casting director Tiffany Little Canfield said. “There were a couple of iterations. Like, is it funny to have people in their 40s for the guys and then make Mabel a teenager or a child so that the age difference is a

Rhenzy Feliz's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows
Image
Rhenzy Feliz has come into the national spotlight thanks to his fantastic co-starring performance in The Penguin, but the actor has been a part of plenty of notable TV shows and movies before 2024, putting in impressive acting showcases each time he appears. Born on October 26, 1997, Feliz was just 26 when he appeared in The Penguin premiere. That wasn't even close to Feliz's first acting job though, and the Brooklyn, NY native got his start back in 2016, with a recurring role on the Hulu comedy series, Casual, in season 2.

Work never let up for Feliz, and aside from a few years in the early 2020s, the Covid-19 years, as they were, he's been constantly performing in either TV or movies. His innocence and charm makes for a good mix that allows him to inhabit sweet, kind characters, who are also stronger than they may appear at first glance. The Penguin is how most wider audiences know him,...

Allswell in New York (2024) Movie Review: Has Its Moments but Feels Too Soap-Operatic for Its Own Good
Ben Snyder
Movies about siblings and their clashes, all related to their pasts, as well as their insecurities and their differentiating relationships with their parents, work in touching the heartstrings primarily because the drama is pulling from recognizable emotions. The tricky balance of ensuring that events play out for the conflict to occur and resolve while also keeping naturalistic tonalities at play is what separates soap operas from impactful drama. It also becomes an acting showcase for all the leads in the films as well.

Ben Snyder’s “Allswell in New York” suffers from a tonal as well as a focus problem. It has too many plots on its plate to finally hone in on the lives of the three Nuyorcan women at the center of the story. Daisy (Elizabeth Rodriguez) plans to bring in a surrogate parent to stay with her. As the story progresses, her happiness at finally experiencing motherhood...

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Boss Unpacks Season 4’s Killer Reveal, and How That New Body Sets Up Season 5
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4, Episode 10.

As one mystery is solved in “Only Murders in the Building,” another begins.

The Season 4 finale saw Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) take down Marshall Pope/Rex Bailey (Jin Ha) for the murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), who committed the crime in under 12 minutes by himself. But in normal fashion for the Hulu comedy, there’s still a few loose ends — the biggest one being a new murder to solve in the already-ordered Season 5: the death of Arconia doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca).

In addition to Lester’s death, it’s also a mystery who’s been watching the trio since Season 1. Charles and Mabel also received an interesting offer from Sofia Caccimelio (Tea Leoni), who was looking to hire them to find her husband Nicky Caccimelio — who was mentioned on...

‘Only Murders in the Building’: Everything to Remember Ahead of the Season 4 Finale
Image
Editor’s Note: This post contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 up until the unaired finale.

After nine episodes investigating the murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), the “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 finale is on the horizon. Between their personal connection to the victim, adventures across the Arconia courtyard, and the simultaneous movie adaptation of their podcast, this season saw the “Omitb” trio of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) pulled in various directions while trying to dig up the truth.

Episode 9, “Escape from Planet Klongo,” took another narrative turn, moving Marshall P. Pope (Jin Ha) into the position of prime suspect. But as it always is with “Only Murders,” expect at least one more killer twist up the sleeve of these storytellers in the Season 4 finale.

But before that episode premieres, here’s a quick refresher on some key elements...

Only Murders in the Building's Big Season 4 Retcon Makes Season 1 Even Darker
Image
The following article contains spoilers from Only Murders in the Building Season 4, now streaming on Hulu.

Only Murders in the Building's Season 4 has been its wildest season yet. The season follows Charles, Oliver, and Mabel as they investigate Sazz Pataki's murder. Sazz's death was a shocking Season 3 cliffhanger because she's one of Charles' closest friends and a fan favorite. Sazz's murder isn't the only shocking thing about Season 4, though. While investigating Sazz's death, the main trio learns that she wasn't the only body that ended up in the Arconia's incinerator.

One name that keeps turning up in the Season 4 investigation is a mysterious man named Milton Dudenoff. Allegedly, Dudenoff owns the apartments the Westies live in, which is why they're able to live there for such a low cost. Over the last few episodes, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel have learned more about Dudenoff, including the fact that he was the...

Allswell Review: Character-Driven Drama Is Poignant & Moving [Tribeca]
Image
This review was originally published during the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival.

There is something about character-driven dramas that gets to the heart of the human experience, turning a simple, yet effective, movie into more of an emotional ride for audiences. Directed by Ben Snyder from a screenplay by Elizabeth Rodriguez (who also stars), Allswell in New York (previously titled Allswell) captures the beauty of a heartfelt, and generally well-told character-driven drama. The film brings the drama, but its never overdone and the performances from the cast elevate the material, adding dimensions to the characters lives.

Richard Kind Praises ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Co-Stars Steve Martin, Martin Short and Eugene Levy: ‘At the Top of Their Game’

For Richard Kind, joining “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 in the role of West Tower resident Vince Fish didn’t take too much convincing.

“They offered it to me. They said, ‘We’ll give you money if you play the part.’ I said, ‘Good, that’s good enough for me’,” the veteran actor of TV, film and theater told TheWrap in an interview when asked what drew him to the role. “If a show that’s produced by Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman, starring Marty Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez says they want you to work with them. You drop everything and you do it. I don’t care if they had me on the toilet reading the Yellow Pages. You do it. I am drawn to these creative people and I trust them because their talent cannot be contained to a page. They’re just spectacular.”

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 4: Dudenoff’s Killer Revealed
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4, Episode 8.

The mystery of who killed Milton Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne) was solved in Tuesday’s episode of “Only Murders in the Building,” titled “Lifeboat” — and it turns out to be none other than Dudenoff himself, with an assist by the Westies.

After learning in last week’s episode that the Westies had been cashing Dudenoff’s checks despite his death, Oliver, Mabel, Charles, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis invite the group over for a game of “Oh Hell” in an effort to confront them about his murder. But the plan quickly fell apart when the Westies revealed that they know the jig is up in their rent control scheme and hold them at knife point.

The trio is back in New York. After discovering the remains of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) in the Arconia’s incinerator, Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver (Martin Short) speculate that Charles (Steve Martin) might have been the intended target of the sniper that took her out. In Episode 2, they start to investigate while on hold with 911. Mabel and Oliver go to the lower-rent side of the building, where they presume the sniper was situated. Charles shelters in his apartment, left to cope with a grief-induced manifestation of Sazz, the threat of the sniper and an unexpected guest. As Martin Short says in the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 teaser clip, “somewhere lay a sniper’s nest,” and the identity of that sniper will prove even more difficult to discover in the latest installment of Hulu’s murder mystery series, which has expanded its star-studded cast quite a bit.

The teaser trailer, plot summary and a new photo reveal the purpose behind the addition of some of the stars, because, in Oliver’s words they’re “goin to the movies.” The “starriest season yet” will arrive this summer on Hulu, bringing back the original trio of sleuths as well as other characters who have been a part of their Arconia drama since the beginning.

A new poster teases the Hollywood plot of Season 4 and bills all the major characters in a great film reel design.

The following contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 2, "The Gates of Heaven," which debuted on September 3, 2024.

While it took Charles, Oliver and Mabel an episode to realize that Charles's stunt double, Sazz Pataki, had been killed, they immediately set to work trying to figure out who the murderer might be. Oliver and Mabel turned their attention to the Arconia's west tower, where the sniper must've been when they shot Sazz. They soon met several of their more distant neighbors, who are also all possible suspects, but one, in particular, may have stood out to viewers.

‘Only Murders in the Building’: Jan’s Return Was Inspired by Pennsylvania’s Parkour Prisoner Escape
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4, Episode 2.

The latest episode of “Only Murders in the Building” saw the surprise return of Amy Ryan as Jan Bellows, Charles’ ex-girlfriend and Tim Kono’s murderer, who visited the grief-stricken true-crime podcaster’s apartment fresh out of prison — and she wasn’t released for good behavior.

Bellows, who emerged from Charles’ closet, revealed that she was able to break out by using parkour taught to her by Sazz combined with “psychosexual manipulation.”

Showrunner John Hoffman revealed that the idea of Jan’s escape was inspired by the real-life manhunt for Pennsylvania prisoner Danelo Canevale last September.

“We were right around the time that the writer’s room was [running] when there was an escape from prison, where the guy was parkouring up the walls, and he got out and there was a chase going on,” Hoffman told TheWrap.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Review: Season 4 Survives a Surplus of Celebrities — Barely
Image
In effect, “Only Murders in the Building” is streaming entertainment’s version of a charm offensive. The multi-genre, multi-generational Hulu original has something — and someone — for everyone. Its three leads are, for the most part, inherently likable. Steve Martin and Martin Short have been building goodwill for decades, and Selena Gomez has been accruing a loyal fanbase of young’uns since her purple-clad co-star was Barney. Sprinkle in affable recurring guests like Nathan Lane, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jackie Hoffman, Jayne Houdyshell, and Tina Fey — all in the first few seasons — and “the Building” becomes a hot spot for big-name talent.

But the series’ intrinsic appeal goes well beyond its popular cast. A perpetual fall/winter season provides plenty of occasions for warm and cozy looks. The Arconia’s Upper West Side origins offer inspiring interior design opportunities. Heck, even the story allows viewers to pick and choose what to focus...

Only Murders In The Building S4 TV Review
Image
Plot: The amateur podcasting trio wrestles with the shocking events surrounding Charles’ stunt double & friend Sazz Pataki. Questioning whether she or Charles was the intended victim, their investigation leads them all the way to Los Angeles where a Hollywood studio is readying a film about the Only Murders podcast. The trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez has produced three consecutive seasons of mystery that balances comedy with quirky characters that do not shy away from a fair amount of drama. Edgar Ramírez, Emory Cohen, and Abbey Lee in Florida Man (2023)
‘Wild Things’ Finds Strength In Sexuality [The Lady Killers Podcast]
Edgar Ramírez, Emory Cohen, and Abbey Lee in Florida Man (2023)
“That’s what I am to you, isn’t it? Swamp trash, just like my mom.”

We’ve all heard stories about Florida Man. Maybe he lost a wrestling match with an alligator, dropped his keys into a pit of snakes, or fell into a flaming dumpster as it floated off to sea. Whatever the case, this southern miscreant has a reputation for spectacularly trashy and ill-advised behavior. And it seems we can’t get enough. But decades before the world regaled the misadventures of Florida Man, John McNaughton gave us Wild Things, a sleazy, sun-baked noir about a troublesome Florida polycule. This salacious film not only features steamy performances from Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon – each playing their own delightful versions of a proto-Florida Man – but two sexy lady killers who set the screen on fire with their seductive scheming and in-your-face sexuality.

Sam Lombardo (Dillon) is a dreamy...

Ezra Review: Stellar Ensemble Fuels This Heartwarming Road Trip Movie
Image
Bobby Cannavale shines in a standout role as a struggling comic navigating life with his autistic son, played memorably by William A. Fitzgerald. The film effectively addresses family dynamics, communication issues, and the lengths parents go to for their children in a heartwarming way. Inspired by real-life experiences, Ezra's emotional depth, stellar ensemble cast, and engaging narrative make it a must-watch for audiences of all ages.

Summer moviegoers looking for a heartwarming crowd-pleaser can bank on Ezra. The engaging new comedy-drama is directed with equal parts vigor and grace by Tony Goldwyn, who makes great use of Tony Spiridakiss passion-filled script about a beleaguered comedian struggling to co-parent his autistic son. This otherwise engaging road trip film may wobble creatively a bit as it heads to the finish line, but thanks to its stellar ensemble cast, great storytelling, and sharp directing style, Ezra shines like a gem.
