Exclusive: In the first of three roundtables featuring this year’s Emmy nominees for Outstanding Casting, Deadline gathered Jeanie Bacharach (The Bear), Linda Lowy (Hacks), Destiny Lilly (Only Murders in the Building), Brett Benner (Shrinking) and Melissa Kostenbauder (The Studio) to talk about self tapes, landing the joke, and the challenges that come with preparing the next generation of casting directors.

The nominees, who each had to submit a 30-minute composition reel from the season to showcase their work, also explained how they judge their peers and what they were most proud of accomplishing on their respective shows.

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rory Kennedy will receive the prestigious Pennebaker Award at the upcoming Critics Choice Documentary Awards in New York, honoring a director whose body of work includes Ethel, a film about her late mother, Ethel Kennedy, as well as Last Days in Vietnam and Ghosts of Abu Ghraib.

The award, named for the late pioneer of direct cinema D.A. Pennebaker, will be presented by filmmaker Chris Hegedus, Pennebaker’s widow, as the Critics Choice Documentary Awards celebrates its 9th annual event. The ceremony will be held November 10 at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.

“They offered it to me. The mystery of who killed Milton Dudenoff (Griffin Dunne) was solved in Tuesday’s episode of “Only Murders in the Building,” titled “Lifeboat” — and it turns out to be none other than Dudenoff himself, with an assist by the Westies.

After learning in last week’s episode that the Westies had been cashing Dudenoff’s checks despite his death, Oliver, Mabel, Charles, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Zach Galifianakis invite the group over for a game of “Oh Hell” in an effort to confront them about his murder. But the plan quickly fell apart when the Westies revealed that they know the jig is up in their rent control scheme and hold them at knife point.

The trio is back in New York. After discovering the remains of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) in the Arconia’s incinerator, Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver (Martin Short) speculate that Charles (Steve Martin) might have been the intended target of the sniper that took her out. In Episode 2, they start to investigate while on hold with 911. Mabel and Oliver go to the lower-rent side of the building, where they presume the sniper was situated. Charles shelters in his apartment, left to cope with a grief-induced manifestation of Sazz, the threat of the sniper and an unexpected guest. Only Murders in the Building showrunner John Hoffman finally addressed the surprise return of Marvel vet Paul Rudd in the fourth season of the acclaimed Hulu mystery comedy. Rudd played the role of movie star Ben Glenroy, who was one of the major characters in the shows third season.

During the latest episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Rudd made an unexpected appearance as a different character. He was cleverly introduced as Bens former stunt double named Glen Stubbins. Speaking with TheWrap, Hoffman shared how they were able to find a way to bring back Rudd to the show, despite his characters death in Season 3. I love Paul Rudd and Paul Rudd loves being on the show, and were doing a season about stunt doubles," he explained. "We had a season last year where Ben Glenroy died, and who was Ben Glenroys stunt double is not an unfathomable question.

As Martin Short says in the Only Murders in the Building Season 4 teaser clip, “somewhere lay a sniper’s nest,” and the identity of that sniper will prove even more difficult to discover in the latest installment of Hulu’s murder mystery series, which has expanded its star-studded cast quite a bit.

The teaser trailer, plot summary and a new photo reveal the purpose behind the addition of some of the stars, because, in Oliver’s words they’re “goin to the movies.” The “starriest season yet” will arrive this summer on Hulu, bringing back the original trio of sleuths as well as other characters who have been a part of their Arconia drama since the beginning.

The latest episode of “Only Murders in the Building” saw the surprise return of Amy Ryan as Jan Bellows, Charles’ ex-girlfriend and Tim Kono’s murderer, who visited the grief-stricken true-crime podcaster’s apartment fresh out of prison — and she wasn’t released for good behavior.

Bellows, who emerged from Charles’ closet, revealed that she was able to break out by using parkour taught to her by Sazz combined with “psychosexual manipulation.”

Showrunner John Hoffman revealed that the idea of Jan’s escape was inspired by the real-life manhunt for Pennsylvania prisoner Danelo Canevale last September.

“We were right around the time that the writer’s room was [running] when there was an escape from prison, where the guy was parkouring up the walls, and he got out and there was a chase going on,” Hoffman told TheWrap.

In effect, “Only Murders in the Building” is streaming entertainment’s version of a charm offensive. The multi-genre, multi-generational Hulu original has something — and someone — for everyone. Its three leads are, for the most part, inherently likable. Steve Martin and Martin Short have been building goodwill for decades, and Selena Gomez has been accruing a loyal fanbase of young’uns since her purple-clad co-star was Barney. Speaking with People, when asked about his possible return to the Hulu comedy, Williams has officially confirmed that he wont be reprising Tobert in Only Murders in the Building Season 4. "No, I'm not on that show anymore," he said. During the last installment, he was introduced as Ben Glenroys camera operator for his documentary. He became Mabels newest love interest, after helping her with the teams investigation. His character was last seen in the Season 3 finale, where it was revealed that his next project would be an independent film in Los Angeles. His absence from the upcoming season seemingly hints that his romance with Mabel didnt work out after all.
