Empire of Light is a drama movie written and directed by Sam Mendes starring Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward and Colin Firth.
Sam Mendes is the absolute star of a movie that is photographically marvelous and which is a tribute to film-making, a tribute to real movie making of a kind of movies we have all started to forget.
About the Movie Empire of Light (2022)
This is a love story in many senses, the physical, metaphorical, psychological, photographic… Empire of Light is a genuine delight…
Out of fashion, delightfully demodé.
Sam Mendes proves that not all stage directors are useless when it comes to the silver screen. This is a movie that knows how to perfectly combine “film making” perfectly, meticulous care of the scenes, elaboration of the scenes, the editing, sets… with that “theatrical” shot in interpretation and evolution of the characters.
A movie that knows how to take the best of both worlds,...

Transformers: Age of Extinction made a very pivotal change to the origins of Galvatron, which ultimately ended up hurting Michael Bay's live-action Transformers franchise. In the film, Galvatron was the result of the efforts of the company Ksi, run by Joshua Joyce (Stanley Tucci), to create an army of Transformers using the metallic alloy "Transformium." Galvatron was created with the help of the destroyed Megatron's head, with this new Transformer becoming a reincarnation of the character.
The origin of Galvatron in Transformers: Age of Extinction differed significantly from the character's original cartoon origins in 1986's Transformers: The Movie, who was a reborn, reconstituted Megatron. Transformers: Age of Extinction screenwriter Ehren Kruger wanted to pay homage to this original origin for Galvatron but also went in a new direction by making the character a human creation. This ended up hampering the movies and franchise since Galvatron was far scarier when...

Thirty years since it ended, we revisit much-loved 80s historical fantasy series Robin Of Sherwood...
The Robin Hood legend has been retold in countless ways, but one of the most memorable of modern times is Richard Carpenter’s hugely influential 1980s imagining, telling the story of Sherwood’s band of outlaws with a combination of realism and luminous fantasy with its roots in British folklore.
Made by Htv in association with production company Goldcrest Films (which was also behind Chariots Of Fire and Gandhi), its 26 episodes ran on ITV from 1984 to 1986, garnering a positive critical reception and inspiring a fan following that’s still enthusiastically active today.
Much of the success of the show was down to the spot-on casting and the chemistry between the performers. Michael Praed’s charismatic-yet-otherworldly presence as Robin was the perfect match for the show’s aesthetic, and the more down-to-earth Little John,...

It has yet to be confirmed, but Michael Bay will likely return to direct the fifth "Transformers" movie, which will also bring back Mark Wahlberg to star. We already know that there's a room of writers working on future "Transformers" sequels and spin-offs, and now we have a few details about "Transformers 5." Spoilers Ahead: While speaking at a UK convention, voice actor Mark Ryan (Jetfire, Lockdown) revealed that Cade Yeager (Wahlberg), the Dinobots and a few Autobots will come together to stop a threat on Earth. Optimus Prime will hed into outer space to hunt down the creators of his race, the Quintessons, something that will lead him to meet up with Unicron. Ryan went on to say that "Transformers 5" will begin shooting early next year.

While no one will ever hail the Transformers franchise for having a complex story, the series has always managed to distill the action down to a simple formula: humans have become embroiled in the ancient battle between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Actors and characters have been switched out over time, but every Transformers movie invariably revolves around these two factions of shape-shifting robots duking it out on Earth. Now it seems that with the coming Transformers 5 will deviate from that formula, and feature dual storylines that take the franchise in a new direction. According to The Christian Post, at the recent Wings and Wheels convention located in the United Kingdom, actor Mark Ryan . who has lent his voice to numerous Autobots and Decepticons over the years . revealed that the upcoming fifth installment to the franchise will have two separate storylines. The first will feel familiar to longtime fans of...

Despite the usual denials, Michael Bay is expected to return to helm the fifth Transformers movie, a release which will no doubt once again earn well over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. With a writers room assembled earlier this year, production will no doubt ramp up soon, but it seems the basic premise has already been decided upon. Talking at a convention in the UK recently, voice actor Mark Ryan (Jetfire, Lockdown) revealed that the plan is to have Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and the Dinobots - with a few Autobots thrown in for good measure - assemble to tackle an impending threat on Earth, while Optimus Prime will head into outer space to hunt down the creators of his race, the Quintessons, something which will see him reportedly meet up with Unicron. It's the latter storyline which looks set to lead into some of those planned spinoffs, and...

Having assembled a dedicated brain trust to nudge the franchise toward a new era, Paramount Pictures is evidently gunning to diversify its Transformers universe – a universe that has been widely derided hitherto for being anything but. That could all be about to change with Transformers 5, though, with various spinoffs and offshoots said to be incubating in development.
Shared cinematic universes quickly became the hot new trend once Marvel had established its trailblazing juggernaut, and though other studios have jumped on the bandwagon as a knee-jerk reaction, there is genuine potential for the Transformers universe to develop into a multi-faceted and, crucially, profitable movie machine. To date, Paramount has enlisted a burgeoning ensemble of crack writers for the task, including Zak Penn, Robert Kirkman, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, Andrew Barrer, Gabrial Ferrari, Christina Hodson, Lindsey Beer, Ken Nolan and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

With Michael Bay finishing up work on his Benghazi movie "13 Hours," talk swirling around a fifth "Transformers" movie is about to ramp up. As we know, a writers room was specially assembled in recent months to help in crafting the screenplay for the film.
Now, voice actor Mark Ryan has reportedly revealed that the upcoming film will go in two distinct directions. Ryan, who voiced the characters of Jetfire in the second and Lockdown in the fourth film, appeared at the UK's Wings and Wheels convention where he said the first storyline will follow Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) as he and both the Dinobots and some of the Autobots set out to save Earth from an impending threat.
The second will lay the groundwork for the future of the franchise which will focus more on the Autobots and Decepticons themselves. In that second storyline, Optimus Prime heads into space to...

Growing up, I was a huge Freddy Krueger fan. I had also become infatuated with Gaston Leroux’s novel, The Phantom of the Opera, which made me a pretty easy mark for Dwight H. Little’s (Halloween 4) 1989 film based on the popular work of fiction. Focusing more on the horror contained within Leroux’s original story, this version is a wickedly ghastly and blood-soaked tale of obsession that allows Robert Englund the room to do what he does best as a performer- go nuts. And after recently checking out the Scream Factory Blu-ray, it was great to see just how well Little’s inventive adaptation has held up over time and how much fun the film still remains, despite its age.

Picking up four years after the Battle of Chicago in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction sees amateur robotics inventor Cade Yaeger (Mark Wahlberg) discovering Optimus Prime (voiced superbly once more by Peter Cullen) while searching for junk to refurbish. The gravely wounded Autobot commander has been in hiding from a covert black ops team led by Harold Attlinger (Kelsey Grammer), who has teamed up with Cybertronian bounty hunter Lockdown (voiced by Mark Ryan) in a bid to destroy all shape-shifting robots. Meanwhile, tech tycoon and billionaire inventor Joshua Joyce (Stanley Tucci) is busy reverse-engineering his own Transformers with a view to having an army of robots under human control.
If that was all the story Age of Extinction was concerned with, the final product would not only be mercifully shorter – at 165 minutes, it’s the longest instalment of the series – it would make for a much better watch.

‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’ review: Michael Bay’s latest ‘Transformers’ movie is ‘the least aggravating of a very aggravating lot’ (photo: Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor in ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’) Suffice it to say, there are many special effects in the Transformers movies of which Transformers: Age of Extinction is the latest and, get ready for some high praise, the least aggravating of a very aggravating lot. In fact, its greatest special effect, much like the previous three films, is its ability to deflect all criticism; these movies are not just critic proof, they’re quality proof. As long as the Autobots or Decepticons or emoticons or Comic-Cons or whatever they’re called keep laying waste to cities and brain cells, its target audience of global fanboys and Viacom shareholders will be sated and the rest of us can go down with the ship watching some arthouse limited release.

Well, Michael Bay has done it again. The master of “Bayhem” has pulled out all the stops in the latest of the Transformers series, with several gigantic setpieces, at least 5 villains, Hong Kong action, car chases, new robots, new sports cars, and an all new cast. From 2007 to 2011, we got a new Transformers installment every other year, all of which followed the story of the Witwicky character portrayed by Shia Labeouf. These films are famous for their incredible robot battle scenes, big explosions, and for introducing the world to Megan Fox. Borrowing many storylines directly from the cartoon series, the trilogy was a hugely successful franchise due mostly to the vision of Bay and his talent for making visual chaos fun and entertaining. The first Transformers film in particular was a crowd-pleasing mixture of realistic depictions of infantry warfare, a nice sense of humor, and fanboy fantasy.

Two giant robots battle while being carried by a two-headed pterodactyl robot as other giant robots lay waste to China. Debris is everywhere. Mark Wahlberg is falling down the side of a building while being chased by Titus Welliver. It's all out carnage to the point director Michael Bay gives up on ambient sound and just lets the score play over the top of buses, cars and buildings, exploding into tiny digital bits, all brought to you by Bud Light, Victoria's Secret and the Beats™ Pill. It's carnivorous insanity, an image of destruction I never thought possible or could even conjure in my wildest dreams. Suffice to say, Transformers: Age of Extinction is unlike anything I've ever seen before on a movie screen and I'm having a hell of a time determining whether that's a good thing or bad thing, all I know is I never want to see it again.

Director Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age Of Extinction opens in theaters this Friday, June 27th and it’s poised to have a mega-opening weekend.
Here’s what the early reviews are saying about the return of the colossal titans:
Variety -
“As the sine qua non of the franchise, it’s the robots — endowed here with character-rich physicality and almost human-scaled facial features — who give the film its emotional heft. Optimus Prime’s charismatic leadership of his team, as well as his unwavering compassion for the humans, again makes him the movie’s moral anchor. Drift, with his samurai getup and Watanabe’s dignified line readings, strikes a neat balance with Goodman’s cigar-chewing, wisecracking Hound. Still, the character most likely to be beloved by audiences, especially tykes, remains Bumblebee.”

Here's the thing… you're going to read a lot of reviews of "Transformers: Age Of Extinction" that will exist primarily to give the critic writing the review a chance to entertain other critics. That drives me crazy. Even when a film is as over the top horrifyingly awful as, say, "Winter's Tale," I'll still try to engage with the material, because that's only fair. I may hate everything about it, but if I'm not willing to treat the film with the same level of scrutiny that I treat everything else, then why bother writing about it? The "Transformers" series so far is, by far, one of the strangest giant franchises in production. I've reviewed all of the films, and I think they are genuinely worthy of examination, not only in the context of Michael Bay's career, but also within the framework that the films have created for these stories.

Sure, Michael Bay's massively scaled "Transformers: Age of Extinction" might be just a little over a month away from premiering all over the world, but apparently that doesn't mean that he can't still cast people in pivotal roles.
Bay announced (via his sleek personal website) that John Goodman and Ken Watanabe will join the voice casting, playing Hound and Drift, respectively, while Peter Cullen and Frank Welker will return to the franchise (Cullen is, once again, Optimus Prime, while Welker will essay a new character, Galvatron).
"I am pleased to welcome two gifted and versatile actors, John Goodman and Ken Watanabe, to the world of Transformers," Bay announced in a statement on the site. "And to reteam with Peter and Frank, who have brought Transformers characters alive from the beginning. Though production is already complete on Transformers: Age of Extinction, that hasn't stopped two last minute additions to the cast of the sequel from director Michael Bay. In fact, this latest update comes from the director's own website MichaelBay.com where the filmmaker revealed that John Goodman and Ken Watanabe have both landed roles in the franchise. However, instead of playing humans, Goodman and Watanabe will actually be providing the voices of the Autobots called Hound and Drift, respectively. That means summer will have a double dose of Watanabe since he also stars in Godzilla, arriving next week. As for the rest of the voice cast, it's mostly composed of actors better known for their voicework. Peter Cullen is back as Optimus Prime while the rest of the vocal talents include Frank Welker back as Galvatron, John Dimaggio as Crosshairs, Mark Ryan as Lockdown, Robert Foxworth as Ratchet and Reno Wilson as Brains.

Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 8 – “VIII.”
Written by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine
Directed by T. J. Scott
Returns to Starz in 2015 for a second season
The eight-episode first seasons that Starz gave to both Da Vinci’s Demons and Black Sails made it frustratingly difficult for their ambitious, sprawling worlds to come alive completely. It might just be because of their genres that require deeper immersion, but the ten-episode second seasons that both have been given feel like the more natural format. At various points in the first season of Black Sails, I admired its tenacity at trying to convince me the characters were as interesting as the show was suggesting (and many times, especially in the second half of the season, they genuinely were that interesting), but I also found myself wanting more world-building via voyages away from Nassau and grander action sequences. All that being said, when the curtain closed on “VIII.

Black Sails, Season 1: Episode 2 – “II.”
Written by Jonathan E. Steinberg & Robert Levine
Directed by Sam Miller
Airs Saturday nights at 9 on Starz
Following last week’s premiere of Black Sails, it was clear that the toughest obstacle the series was going to face in its first season was making such a large group of characters interesting enough that we have stakes in the landlocked portions of episodes. “II.” largely begins to address some of those concerns, and while there is still a lot of work to be done with central figures like John Silver and Charles Vane, the rest of the group members are starting to become much more recognizable as characters and not just people who are on the screen.
“II.” begins by focusing on what is currently the love story in Black Sails – the relationship between Hannah New’s Eleanor Guthrie and Jessica Parker Kennedy’s Max.

Starz hasn’t really ever been a major player in the TV game, with Spartacus being the only real success the channel has ever had. They only started offering original programming in 2005, though, and so new shows like the pirate drama Black Sails can still be considered among the channel’s early forays into the medium. Executive produced by Michael Bay – which the posters and trailers make sure to highlight – Black Sails serves as a prequel of sorts to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island. Spoilers follow for the pilot episode of the series, entitled simply “I.”, which aired in the Us on Saturday night.

Drifting into the largely unexplored waters of television shows based on pirates, Starz has set its swashbuckling seafarer, Black Sails, upon us to fill that deep void Pirates of the Caribbean left in the hearts of every person ever. As we’ve seen with certain zombie series, transitioning between film and television can be a rough process for genres. How does one make a pirate narrative fit into an arc that could potentially span several years? What about the pirate world is worth immersing viewers in it for that long? "Black Sails" begins on board a doomed ship, one that's being attacked by pirates, and not of the Disney variety. The vessels lurch together, and the deck is in chaos, bodies piling up, smoke from cannon and musket blasts filling the air. When the aggressors prepare to break down the door behind which the captain and crew have barricaded themselves, they first let loose a rhythmic war chant and then a barrel loaded with explosives. Into the stunned, muted haze following the blast roars a man with a painted skull face and the teeth of a shark who leads the slaughter inside. In the calm scene that follows, the captain having surrendered and the ship secured and in the midst of being plundered, the same intimidating figure pops up in an attempt to scare the pirate's quartermaster Gates (Mark Ryan), who just rolls his eyes and tells his cohort to...
