Stocky British character actor, with theatrical experience. Bald from an early age, he was an equally adaptable purveyor of subtle menace, amiability or of mild-mannered ineffectuality. Increasingly gained weight in his later years, but remained in demand in both films and TV until his death from a heart attack in 1961.
