Actor Julian Sands (Warlock) went missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy back in January of 2023, and sadly, his remains were found the following June. Just four months before Sands went missing, we reported on a film called The Last Breath, a shark thriller he was working on. He gave one of his final performances in this film – and soon, we’re going to have the chance to see that performance. Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has acquired rights to shark attack thriller The Last Breath from Metro International.

Written by Nick Saltrese (A Prayer Before Dawn) and directed by Joachim Hedén (Breaking Surface), the film is produced by Andrew Prendergast (Shark Bait), and Chris Reed (Shark Bait).

The pic stars Julian Sands (A Room with a View) in his last film role alongside Jack Parr (Peaky Blinders), Kim Spearman (As I Am), and Alexander Arnold (Yesterday). The movie shot in late 2022, just a few months before Sands went missing while hiking in California. The actor’s remains were found in June on Mount Baldy.

Channel 5 Hails ‘Black Cab’ With Robert Glenister, Suzanne Packer & Sean Pertwee

Paramount’s UK terrestrial network Channel 5 has unveiled a four-part thriller, Black Cab, with Robert Glenister (Sherwood) , Suzanne Packer (In My Skin) and Sean Pertwee starring. The contemporary thriller, produced by Story Films in association with All3Media International, will air next year. Black Cab will follow Glenister as a down-and-out Liverpool taxi driver, who begins to form an unhealthy obsession and twisted sense of world view of a late-night radio talk show host (Pertwee). Nick Saltrese (A Prayer Before Dawn) has penned the series and Diarmuid Goggins (Kin, Bulletproof) is the director, with Alex Jones (Penance, Witness No. 3) producing. All3Media International will handle global distribution.

Last year, writer/director Joachim Hedén brought us the survival thriller Breaking Surface (watch it Here), about a woman struggling to save her sister, who was trapped underwater by a rockslide in the icy waters of Norway. Now Hedén is in production on another thriller about diving – but this time around, the threat to the divers are sharks. Filming in Belgium, the shark thriller may or may not end up being called The Last Breath. The Wreck has also come up as a potential title. But whatever the title happens to be, the first image from the film has been unveiled online and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Shark movies. What to say about the genre? Well, one thing you can say is that genre films featuring sharks terrorising humans are certainly prolific in their production, it feels like every month we get another shark movie of some kind. However, at this rate, there’s not many stories left to tell about shark versus man so filmmakers need the extra special something to make their movie stand out… So what does Shark Bait offer?

Well for a start it comes from director James Nunn, the British filmmaker behind a slew of great low-budget action movies over the years. It opens with a camera creeping across a reef as the credits roll. No bright colours here, just darkness and a sense that something dangerous might be lurking nearby. It’s a tribute to Jaws by someone who has actually paid attention, and it’s the only moment of homage in a film which is otherwise determined to stand on its own two feet. Night Caller: "Following a successful run on the genre festival circuit, 123 Go Films has announced the North American VOD premiere of Chad Ferrin's Night Caller.

The fund has previously backed titles including ‘Censor’ and ‘The Colour Room’.

Altitude Film Sales has boarded high concept survival thriller “The Wreck” and will introduce the project to buyers at the upcoming Cannes virtual market.

Based on a screenplay by Nick Saltrese, the film will follow a group of old college friends who reunite on a Caribbean scuba diving trip exploring the wreckage of a WWII battleship and find themselves trapped inside the underwater labyrinth of rusted metal surrounded by great white sharks.

The film will be directed by Liam O’Donnell, who began his career working with Hydraulx VFX on projects including Fox’s “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007), Marvel’s “Iron Man 2” (2009) and Relativity/Universal’s “Skyline” (2010), which he produced and co-wrote. In 2017, O’Donnell wrote his directorial debut, “Beyond Skyline,” starring Frank Grillo, Bojana Novakovic and Iko Uwais. Recently, O’Donnell wrote and directed the trilogy capper “Skylines,” starring Lindsey Morgan, Rhona Mitra and Alexander Siddig.

Directed by James Nunn, best known for British thriller “Tower Block” (2012) and actioner “Eliminators” (2016), the film follows a group of spring-breakers enjoying a weekend in Mexico. After a big night of partying on the beach until dawn, the friends steal a couple of jetskis and take them out to sea, but end up in a horrific head-on collision.

After one of the jetskis sinks, the group finds itself stranded two miles from land on one remaining, broken-down jetski, and struggling with a badly injured friend. With no clear way home and predators circling in the choppy waters below, the true horror begins.

Regional fund established in response to Covid-19 crisis.

The UK’s Liverpool Film Office (Lfo) has revealed the first 15 projects to benefit from a new fund, created in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

More than £158,000 worth of funding has been awarded to a mix of established producers in the region as well as projects from burgeoning female and Bame-led companies. The money comes from the Lfo’s Film and TV Development Fund, which was set up a month into lockdown, using resources from Liverpool City Region’s (Lcr) strategic investment fund.

The film is directed by James Nunn, whose credits include co-director on 2012 UK thriller Tower Block and second-unit director on 47 Meters Down, while the script is by Nick Saltrese (A Prayer Before Dawn). The producer is Andrew Prendergast for Vitality Visual Effects UK, whose recent credits include The Courier starring Olga Kurylenko and Gary Oldman.

Ben Hardy, who recently portrayed Queen drummer Roger Taylor in box office hit Bohemian Rhapsody, has joined the cast of Adam Randall’s UK thriller Recovery.

Hardy will star alongside Tim Roth in the three-hander, with further casting now underway.

Three years in the making, Joe Cole starrer A Prayer Before Dawn will start its theatrical release this weekend. The A24 title, which debuted at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, is based on a non-fiction book written by Billy Moore, played by Cole in the feature, which opens in select cities Friday. The Wolfpack filmmaker Crystal Moselle returns with her narrative feature debut, Skate Kitchen, which premiered at Sundance where Magnolia Pictures caught the film in January. The film follows a group of young women who she met on the subway in a story that has some parallel to their real lives. And Oscilloscope is opening Madeline’s Madeline with newcomer Helena Howard along with Molly Parker and Miranda July. Also a Sundance debut, the company said it has been championed by critics, which it hopes will overcome skepticism by some exhibitors. The company said its trailer, however, has reached ‘cult’ status.

The line-up for the UK Film Centre at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (May 18-27) includes a talent talk with the producers of Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing Of A Sacred Deer, a discussion about Brexit and a panel on attracting world-class talent (hosted by Screen International editor Matt Mueller).

The UK Film Centre is run by We Are UK Film, whose partners include the British Film Institute (BFI), the British Film Commission (Bfc), British Council, Creative Scotland, Film London and Northern Ireland Screen.

Altitude Film Distribution has acquired UK distribution rights to A Prayer Before Dawn, Jean-Stephane Sauvaire’s Muay Thai boxing thriller that stars 2011 Screen Star of Tomorrow Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders, Green Room).

The film is set to premiere at Cannes Film Festival next month as part of the Midnight Screenings programme.

Screenplay is by Jonathan Hirschbein and Nick Saltrese and is from Billy Moore’s book, which is based on his own experiences.

This is director Sauvaire’s second feature after Johnny Mad Dog, which premiered at Cannes in 2008.

Exclusive: A Quiet Passion producer is working on an Emily Dickinson documentary.

Hurricane Films, the UK production company behind Terence Davies’ Emily Dickinson biopic A Quiet Passion, which is premiering in Berlin today (Feb 14), has revealed details of its forthcoming slate.

To accompany A Quiet Passion, Hurricane is now preparing Phosphorescence, a documentary about Dickinson to be directed by Solon Papadopoulos, the co-owner and founder of Hurricane Films.

Another Hurricane project is The Route, the first feature project from TV writer Joe Ainsworth, which is in advanced development.

The film is about an elderly man who makes an epic journey from John O’Groats, the most northerly point of mainland Britain, to Land’s End, the most westerly point.

The man travels by public buses all the way, using his old age pensioner pass. “It’s a beautifully observed piece about old age but also about the country,” observed Hurricane’s other co-founder Roy Boulter.

Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole is to replace Charlie Hunnam (Pacific Rim) in true-life Thai kick-boxing prison thriller A Prayer Before Dawn.

Cole is a former Screen Star of Tomorrow and has recently completed filming independent feature Woodshock, alongside Kirsten Dunst. Currently filming season three of Peaky Blinders, Cole will next be seen in Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room and Billy Ray’s The Secret In Their Eyes with Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Prayer Before Dawn, produced by the UK’s Hurricane Films, is directed by Jean-Stephane Sauvaire (Johnny Mad Dog) and was first announced ahead of last year’s American Film Market (Afm).

HanWay Films will return with the film at this year’s Afm (Nov 4-11) to sell international rights.

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) will co-represent the film’s domestic distribution rights with HanWay.

"Sons of Anarchy" and "Pacific Rim" star Charlie Hunnam is attached to star in Jean-Stephane Sauvaire's Thai boxing prison thriller "A Prayer Before Dawn" at Senorita Films.

Described as a mashup of "Drive" and "The Raid", Nick Saltrese penned the script which is based on the true-life story of Liverpool raised amateur boxer and drug dealer Billy Moore's incarceration in Klong Prem Thai prison, better known as the infamous 'Bangkok Hilton'. His two year incarceration in that brutal place changed his outlook on life.

Hunnam is currently training for the Muay Thai sequences in the film which will shoot mid-2015. Real-life former prisoners and Muay Thai champions are being sought for supporting roles.

Hurricane Films, the UK production company behind Terence Davies’ Of Time and the City, has picked up three titles for its production slate.

Triple World Score, set among the world of Scrabble enthusiasts, has been written by Frank Cotterell-Boyle (24 Hour Party People) and will be directed by Carl Hunter.

Two Sevens Clash, based on the true experiences of a young Orthodox Jewish punk rocker in 1977 London, will be directed by scriptwriter Mark Jay.

Prayer Before Dawn is based on the book of the same name by ex-professional kickboxer Billy Moore, who wrote about his five-year prison sentence in the notorious ‘Bangkok Hilton’.

The screenplay is being written by Nick Saltrese, who has worked on UK soaps Emmerdale and EastEnders.

Hurricane has also confirmed that it has created its first Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme vehicle for project development.
