Gregory Schmauss was born at Mather Air Force Base, in Sacramento,
California.
He attended Villa Park High School, in Villa Park, California and graduated in 1974. Kevin Costner also attended Villa Park High School and graduated one year prior in 1973.
Gregory Schmauss graduated from California State University, Fullerton, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice in 1979. He also received a lifetime California State Teaching Credential for the designated subject of Police Science.
In April, 1980 he was hired by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in California and was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff. He served as a Deputy Sheriff under Sheriff's Frank Bland, Floyd Tidwell, Dick Williams and finally under Sheriff Gary Penrod. Schmauss' assignments included working at Glen Helen Jail, Central Jail, West End Station, Yucaipa Station and Chino Hills Station in California. His duties included Jailer, Bailiff, Patrolman, Field Training Officer and Station Investigator. He retired from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in 1999.
In, 2000, Schmauss became licensed in the State of California as a Private Investigator and worked as a contract Special Investigator for the United States Office of Personnel Management through the United States Investigations Service. Schmauss conducted background Investigations involving Top Secret and above security clearances for a variety of United States federal agencies and all branches of the United States military.
