Ben Stiller doesn't think his 30-year-old comedy would be released by Disney today. Nevertheless, he can still remember how fun it was to make the movie three decades ago.
In 1995, director Steven Brill's Heavyweights, which was co-written with Judd Apatow, premiered in movie theaters. Primarily consisting of younger actors, the series was set at a "fat camp" for children. Stiller starred in dual roles, playing Tony Perksi Jr., a fitness entrepreneur who takes over the camp whilst the kids work to overthrow him; Stiller also plays the character's father. Looking back at the movie upon reaching its 30th anniversary, Stiller shared a message on X acknowledging that the film would be seen as much more problematic today.
Somehow I don’t think this will be at the head of the Disney+ queue ever. In fact I’m not sure they are aware they made it. But that was an...

“Somehow I don’t think this will be at the head of the Disney+ queue ever,” Stiller posted on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. “In fact I’m not sure they are aware they made it. But that was an incredibly fun summer in North Carolina 30 years ago.”
Heavyweights revolve around a weight loss camp for boys and the campers working to overthrow the fitness entrepreneur. Stiller had dual roles in the film and co-starred with Tom McGowan, Aaron Schwartz, Shaun Weiss, Tom Hodges, Leah Lail, Paul Feig, Kenan Thompson, David Bowe, Max Goldblatt, Robert Zalkind, Patrick Labrecque, Jeffrey Tambor, Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara, and many more.

In a lot of ways, the '90s was a true golden age for Disney. From absolutely monster animated hits like "The Lion King" to the true Christmas classic that is "The Muppet Christmas Carol," it was a rich time for the Mouse House. Yet, not everything can be a winner out of the gate. Such was the case with "Heavyweights." Released in 1995, the live-action comedy about kids at a fat camp whose summer is upended by a weight loss guru simply didn't connect with audiences in its day.
As has often been the case throughout Disney's history, animation has been the studio's bread and butter. That was no different in the '90s, as hits like "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" took center stage.

The Boys is one of Amazon Prime's biggest hits, and it's easy to see why so many viewers connect with the explosive action-adventure TV show. The series premiered during the height of popularity for superhero movies and TV series and takes a darker and more satirical spin on this genre, making the heroic figures of these narratives much more flawed. Whether the actors in The Boys are playing struggling heroes or brutal antagonists, each character makes its mark and brings an unforgettable dynamic to The Boys, making the series what it is today.
While waiting for The Boys season 5, it's fun to look back on some of the biggest projects that the cast has been a part of, and there are many exciting movies and TV shows that fit the bill. The kinds of film and television that The Boys' actors are featured in vary widely by genre and format,...

De-aging CGI has come a long way since the prologue to 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand" turned Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen into abominations out of a Robert Zemeckis motion-capture nightmare. 2023's "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," for example, allowed an octogenarian Harrison Ford to shed several decades in a generally convincing manner for its own extended opening flashback. Yet, no matter how much the tech improves, this approach is always going to be hampered by the fact that our brains intuitively seek our flaws once we know something has been digitally-rendered (hence the uncanny valley effect). Going to the opposite extreme isn't necessarily the solution either, as practical makeup and effects aren't without similar limitations.

The best summer camp movies aren't all coming-of-age tales, and the theme of heading out for some summer fun has been explored in nearly every genre. However, almost all summer camp movies see an ensemble cast of characters leaving their homes for a few short weeks to spend time with their peers. Summer camp movies also tend to have a special nostalgia factor for older viewers, while younger audience members are entertained by the general antics of the school-free season.
Although a large sector of summer camp movies feature younger casts going through the awkward stages of growing up, not all films focus on the campers. Some opt to follow the counselors' stories or explore the larger experience of going to camp. From genre tropes like inter-camp competitions or the threat of a camp's closure to complete subversions that see slashers on the loose or campers going against authority, there's a film for every viewer.

When Disney's Heavyweights is mentioned, most viewers who remember the 1995 film reflect on it fondly. After all, the movie was considered a classic and can still be watched on Disney+. Unfortunately, however, not all pictures age gracefully, and Heavyweights is no exception. The feature still has its moments, but the premise and certain scenes are hard to watch now. It's safe to say that if the film were made or rebooted today, it wouldn't go over so well.
The film had a great cast and starred Kenan Thompson, Shaun Weiss and Ben Stiller. Still, the issue with Heavyweights is its subject, which follows Gerald Garner (Aaron Schwartz) to a "fat camp." As a result, the '90s family film focuses on the children's weight, which is no surprise given the title, but in some cases, exploits it for laughs, which is problematic by today's standards.

Aaron Schwartz has definitely grown up since his fat-camp days in fan-fave movie Heavyweights. And boy has time worked in his favor. The 34-year-old has dropped those pounds and is now smoking hot! It's been 20 years since the classic Disney movie hit theaters, and Schwartz is almost unrecognizable! It's hard to believe it's been over 20 years since we had "the best damn summer of our lives," thanks to "Heavyweights." To celebrate the movie's big milestone, Huffington Post tracked down Aaron Schwartz -- and wow, does he look different! The now-34-year-old actor, who played Gerry in the funny flick and Karp in "Mighty Ducks," stepped away from acting as a teen but has since made his return to the big screen. "I did 'Pete & Pete' after 'Heavyweights.' I was working since the time I was 10 until I was 16. It got to the point where I was like, 'I need a break. I need to visit family out in Israel and relax,' and it turned into 10 years," he told the outlet. "So when I got back into it, I did 'Guiding Light,' which was a soap opera just recently canceled. I did 'Gossip Girl' for about 4 seasons.

I just showed my kids the The Mighty Ducks for the first time recently, and they seemed to enjoy it. Now they want to be hockey players. I was surprised to learn that over the weekend there was a Mighty Ducks reunion for the 20th anniversary of the release of D2: The Mighty Ducks. I seriously can't believe it's been 20 years since the sequel came out! That makes me feel really old. The cast came together and posted photos of the event on Instagram, but one of the best ones was when they got together to form the famous "Flying V" from the movie. The photo above came with the follow caption:
"Flying V!!!! Scott Whyte, Aaron Schwartz, Colombe Jacobsen, mike Vitar, Stephen Herek, rob Lieberman, Vincent Larusso, @garretth Elden Henden, Carsten Norwgard, Jordan Kerner, Brandon Adams, Danny Tamborelli, Asron Lohr, Maria Ellingsen, Matt Dohery, Shawn Weiss #mightyducks #mD2 #20yearreunion...

Cinelinx weighs in on the new Heavyweights Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A group of kids at a fat camp band together when an ambitious motivational speaker (Ben Stiller) takes over as owner, making everyone miserable. Co-written by Judd Apatow.
Directed by Stephen Brill
The Delivery
Remember the 1979 Bill Murray comedy Meatballs? It was no classic, but it was a funny and entertaining look at summer camp life. Now, imagine Meatballs set in the 1990s, minus the genuine humor and funny lead. That's the best way to describe Heavyweights, a 1995 Disney summer camp comedy remembered only for being one of Judd Apatow's early films. It also features Ben Stiller, in a limited role. Don't get too excited: this combination isn't nearly as funny as you hoped it might be.
For some odd reason, Disney seems to think we're all big fans of this film, because they have cranked out a special...

“It’s a fat camp! Are you kidding?”
School's out for summer and, for some kids, that means camp. Gerry (Aaron Schwartz) is 11 years old (and unaccountably in high school) and his parents are sending him to Camp Hope. The pathetic promo video starts off weak, but the promise of a big bouncy thing in the middle of a lake and go-cart races are intriguing. Then he sees the campers—they’re fat. It’s a fat camp. Gerry ain’t interested but his father (Jeffrey Tambor), who is clearly a bit ashamed of his son’s weight, makes him go. Things start off fine. He meets a few veteran campers like Roy (Kenan Thompson) and Josh (Shaun Weiss) as well as camp counselors Pat (Tom McGowan) and Tim (Paul Feig) and they’re all pretty cool and provide a safe, no-bullying summer. But when the Bushkins (Jerry Stiller and...

Ben Stiller may be able to throw his weight around in Hollywood now, but in 1995, he was just embarking on his Hollywood career.
The new cover art for the Dec. 11 Blu-ray re-release of the mid-90s classic kid comedy "Heavyweights," however, would lead you to believe otherwise.
Stiller played a bit part in the movie: Tony Perkins, the militaristic fitness instructor who runs the Camp Hope summer weight loss program the film's young (and hefty) stars attend. He doesn't even make the first page of the movie's credited stars on IMDb!
The new case art for "Heavyweights" might as well change the title to "Ben Stiller Presents... Heavyweights," for all that Stiller's mug is enlarged and prominently placed. The thumbs up is his endorsement! Thirty-year-old Ben Stiller wants to share this movie, released just three years after his (uncredited) star turn as "pie thrower" in "The Nutt House," with you,...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! Who wants a free DVD of one of this week’s new releases? As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. The Story of Film: An Odyssey There have been many documentaries about movies, but all of them can pretty much give up and go home now. This British production was six years in the making, filmed across four continents, covers eleven decades and nearly one thousand films in its quest to offer as complete as possible a look at and into the world of cinema. Film historian Mark Cousins begins his journey in the late 1800s and through fifteen hour-long episodes explores the innovators and the ways they helped the art form grow and transform into the films we have today. Filled with film clips, anecdotes, interviews and a deep knowledge of film history, this is a fascinating look at all aspects...

If you were a kid who grew up during the '90s, chances are you were probably watching either MTV or Nickelodeon to get your fix of entertainment for the day. And if you watched Nickelodeon, you were probably a fan of “The Adventures of Pete & Pete,” the oddball series featuring two brothers both named Pete and their sometimes surreal adventures growing up in the suburb of Wellsville. Created by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi -- who were working in the promo department at the still-fledgling network -- 'Pete & Pete' had begun as a series of shorts in 1989 before becoming a regular series several years later. But this wasn’t just any kids program. Not only did it feature an 8-year-old with a tattoo of a topless mermaid named Petunia and a personal superhero wildly gesticulating in skin tight pants but featured recurring guest stars, including Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop,...

Anyone who's gone to sleepaway camp is well aware of the candy hiding tradition. You arrive with a backpack stuffed with the best of the best and then hide your stash in the most obscure places throughout the bunk, some of which you'll likely forget about until it's time to pack up and go home. Looking back, I probably took the venture way too seriously; it's not like I went to fat camp.
For Heavyweights' Gerald Garner (Aaron Schwartz) and his new bunkmates at Camp Hope, it's a different story. The boys think they've got the art of candy concealing down, but when the longtime camp owners, the Bushkins, are replaced with fitness fiend and all-around whacko, Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller), even their best hiding spots can't fool the man who's got no problem cancelling lunch for a day, "due to lack of hustle."
The scene is fantastically crafty,...
