I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down with star Jaeden Martell and director John Lee Hancock and pick their brain a bit about Mr. Harrigan’s Phone. I was able to see the film myself (Check out the review here) and I absolutely loved it. As a big fan of coming-of-age films, this was a great watch and made me very excited to talk to these two.
Mr. Harrigan’s Phone synopsis:
When Craig, a young boy living in a small town (Jaeden Martell) befriends Mr. Harrigan, an older, reclusive billionaire (Donald Sutherland), the two begin to form an unlikely bond over their love of books and reading. But when Mr. Harrigan sadly passes away, Craig discovers that not everything is dead and gone and strangely finds himself able to communicate with his friend from the grave through the iPhone in this supernatural coming-of-age story that shows that certain connections are never lost.

The Stephen King adaptation renaissance is showing no signs of slowing down, in large part thanks to Netflix, which has recently brought three of the author's short stories to our screens. Joining the streamer's library alongside Mike Flanagan's "Gerald's Game," Zak Hilditch's "1922," and Vincenzo Natali's "In The Tall Grass," Netflix has finally released a trailer for the upcoming film, "Mr. Harrigan's Phone," another movie based on a chilling story from the famed horror writer. This time around, the supernatural is clashing with one of the scariest concepts of all: growing up. The film comes from writer-director John Lee Hancock and stars Jaeden Martell and Donald Sutherland in the lead roles.
Coming-of-age drama takes center stage in this story about Craig (Martell), a teenage boy befriending a reclusive billionaire (Sutherland as the titular Mr. Harrigan). They form a bond so strong that not even death can split them...

In the new trailer for Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, the titular character played by Donald Sutherland dies, but it appears he still is able to communicate in the supernatural thriller. Based on the short story by Stephen King, the John Lee Hancock written-and-directed film arrives on Oct. 5 via Netflix.

"My Grandma always used to say: a person shouldn't call out unless they want an answer." Netflix has revealed the first trailer for Mr. Harrigan's Phone, another creepy, mysterious Stephen King adaptation from the streamer. Remember how good Gerald's Game was? Sounds like just the right treat for this year's Halloween season. A boy and an aging billionaire bond over books — and their first iPhones. When the man passes, their mysterious connection refuses to die as the two continue to communicate through the iPhone. From Ryan Murphy, Blumhouse Film and Stephen King comes a supernatural coming-of-age story, starring Donald Sutherland and Jaeden Martell. The supporting cast also includes Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett, Colin O’Brien, Cyrus Arnold, Thomas Francis Murphy, & Peggy J. Scott. This looks dang good!! I dig the use of the phone vibration sound as part of the score in the trailer - nice work, Netflix. ›››

The official trailer for Netflix’s Mr. Harrigan’s Phone warns that some connections never die and that you shouldn’t call out unless you want an answer. The trailer reveals that the bond between a bullied teenager and an elderly gentleman doesn’t end once the old man passes away. As for the warning not to call out…well, the old guy apparently wasn’t the nicest man in town before he died.
The cast is led by Jaeden Martell as Craig and Donald Sutherland (The Undoing) as the titular character. Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Joe Tippett, Colin O’Brien, Cyrus Arnold, Thomas Francis Murphy, and Peggy J. Scott also star.
Mr. Harrigan’s Phone is based on a short story by Stephen King. John Lee Hancock adapted King’s work and directed the 2022 horror film. Ryan Murphy, Jason Blum, and Carla Hacken serve as producers.
Netflix has set a Wednesday, October 5, 2022 premiere date.

Netflix has released the first photos from Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, a 2022 film based on a short story by Stephen King. Adapted and directed by John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), Mr. Harrigan’s Phone stars Donald Sutherland as Harrigan and Jaeden Martell as a young man who befriends the elderly Hannigan.
While most, but definitely not all, of Stephen King’s work scares the hell out of readers, Hancock describes this particular story as more of a cautionary fairy tale.
“More than anything, it’s about an odd relationship between a billionaire in his 80s and a [young man] and the bonds of friendship, and how far will you go for a friend?” writer/director Hancock said in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “Do you like Shawshank Redemption, do you like Stand By Me,...

From the 1976 adaptation of "Carrie" to 2017's "It," Stephen King's books have always shown great potential for a successful movie. Netflix has seemed aware of this fact ever since they started making original content; they released a film adaptation of King's claustrophobic novel "Gerald's Game" in 2017, and it was just as disturbing as the trailers promised.
At the same time, it's also become clear over the years that novellas and short stories, perhaps more so than full-length novels, make for great films. "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Mist" were both novellas, and they ended up making for the most critically acclaimed King movies ever made. King's shorter works often give directors far more room to breathe. With that in mind,...

Denée Benton‘s Peggy Scott is one of the most necessary characters in The Gilded Age. Her presence brings the experiences of Black women in the 1800s to the screen in a way not often seen, giving viewers an important education, whether they realize it or not. In Season 1, Peggy pursued her writing career and applied her craft to political journalism — a move her father, Arthur Scott (John Douglas Thompson), thinks a waste and somehow harmful to continuing their family’s legacy among the Black elite of the time. The Gilded Age Season 2 will dive deeper into the rich world of Brooklyn’s growing wealthy Black community and show viewers Peggy’s next steps after learning her child lives. Alison Cohen Rosa/HBO For TV Insider, Benton breaks down the importance of Peggy’s presence in the HBO period drama and the part she played in bringing Black women onto...

“My heart jumped!,” recalls Christine Baranski about the moment she heard Julian Fellowes planned to write a series about the “gilded age” of American history. The Emmy-winning actress shares, “One is not often offered period pieces of any kind,” but especially ones set during the “very special… scenically rich period” of the late-nineteenth century United States. Years later, she would go on star in HBO’s “The Gilded Age” with Cynthia Nixon, who concurs that this period is “really exciting” to explore on screen because “the roots of what New York would become and America would become were crystalized” in this moment. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to Radha Blank’s directorial debut “The 40-Year-Old Version” after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, the streamer announced Wednesday.
The film, which was also written by Blank, stars Welker White, Reed Birney, T.J. Atoms, Doris McCarthy and Peggy J. Scott. Lena Waithe produced alongside Jennifer Semler, Jordan Fudge, Blank, Rishi Rajani and Inuka Bacote-Capiga.
The comedy is about a down-on-her-luck playwright who thinks the only way to get her life back on track is to become a rapper, at age 40.

Netflix has been relatively quiet at the festival this year, but the distributor did come to the festival with its own slate, including the Taylor Swift documentary, “Miss Americana.” Plus, the streamer acquired the rights to the documentary “Mucho Mucho Amor” before the festival even began.

The opening transition from credits to film of Petra Biondina Volpe’s Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award-winning The Divine Order is absolute perfection. With Jo Jo Benson and Peggy Scott-Adams’ “Soulshake” playing atop images from America spanning women’s liberation, civil rights, Woodstock, and more, we begin to see the impact of political revolutions changing the very fabric of first world societies. And then with a record scratch we’re transported to a rural village in Switzerland at the exact same time: the quiet patriarchal status quo of men at work and women at home intact with seemingly no end approaching. The nation was one of the last developed democracies to grant women voting rights with some districts holding out until 1990. Volpe has captured that tenacious struggle.

I had no idea why and then at the end of the day a late email from WB arrived in my Inbox asking to have the trailer for the film replaced with a new version. The note came with little explanation other than saying it was not a new trailer as much as there was a minor change resulting in the omission of some dialogue. As I was looking over some of the linking referrers to the site yesterday I was directed to an article at ABC News that was the cause for the spike in traffic to the Orphan page along with further details as to why the change in the trailer was requested.
