Never one to stick with a single genre, director Francis Lawrence has attached himself to a new project in the form of "Stalag-x," a sci-fi film based on the 2018 graphic novel of the same name written by Kevin J. Anderson and Steven L. Sears (with Mike Ratera providing the artwork).

For those who don't know his name right off the bat, Lawrence is a former music video and commercial director who made the jump to helming feature-length movies with 2005's "Constantine." Toronto -- Canadian cartoon producer Cookie Jar Entertainment has hired former Columbia TriStar and Paramount TV division boss Tom Mazza to lead its hunt for the next "Flashpoint."

Burbank-based Mazza will spearhead the push into U.S. network series and syndicated fare for the Toronto-based producer as head of a new primetime label, the Jar.

Mazza, who most recently ran branded entertainment studio Madison Road Entertainment ("Treasure Hunters") with Jak Severson, joins Cookie Jar as executive vp and head of worldwide TV, with a focus on moving the company beyond animation and into live-action family programming, ideally for the 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. primetime slots.

Cookie Jar is joining a crowded field of Canadian producers, including E1 Television and Shaftsbury Films, who recently have been able to co-produce dramas with U.S. networks no longer willing to shoulder the cost of scripted series on their own.

Xena Writers Workshop: Friday 8Am To Noon Here's the rare opportunity for attendees to learn more about the art of screenwriting and the business of television. An in-depth intimate Writers Workshop will be held on Friday morning of the convention (will not conflict with guest appearances). There will be two instructors for the class as follows:

Steven L. Sears -- co-executive producer of Xena, co-creator and executive producer of Sheena.  Steve has written and/or produced over two hundred episodes of television for twenty series, including shows such as Hardcastle & McCormick, The A Team, Walker Texas Ranger, and many others as well as features and pilots.

Paul Robert Coyle -- Xena freelance writer of Ten Little Warlords, A Necessary Evil, The Execution, Sacrifice II, Send In The Clones.  He's also written for many shows including Legend of the Seeker, Dead Zone, Voyager and Deep Space Nine.
