Irrfan Khan’s Most Cherished Role
Image
Celebrating the career of the late Irrfan Khan, Subhash K Jha shares what the brilliant actor told him in an earlier interview about how he becomes his characters and reveals what was Irrfan’s most cherished dream role.

Irrfan Khan was was hoping to play Jawaharlal Nehru in Joe Wright’s Indian Summer, is undeterred by the fact that he looks nothing like India’s first prime minister and says he can pull off the role convincingly.

He told me, “I’ll turn myself into the character through my attitude. When I was just out of the Nsd (National School of Drama) I had played Lenin at the age of 21. It made me realise my potential and direction as an actor. Since Lenin, I’ve played other biographical characters. I’m playing another real-life character, Pan Singh Tomar. I’ll be playing the Punjabi poet Pash in Anurag Kashyap’s film.

Ke Huy Quan has revealed the important life skill he learned from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom co-star Harrison Ford. The Oscar-winning actor was just 13 years old when he worked with Ford in the 1984 prequel, playing Indiana Jones' sidekick Short Round.

Temple of Doom saw Indy and Short Round trying to rescue villagers in British India from the clutches of a cult practising black magic. Steven Spielberg's movie featured some now-classic action sequences, including Indy trying to trap members of the cult in crocodile-infested waters.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Quan credited his co-star with teaching him how to swim on the Temple of Doom set.

Image
Like cinema, food often creates a powerful communal experience, and movies have used food in a variety of ways. Food is one of the few universal experiences, and art has historically used it to communicate across different cultures. Different kinds of food can mean different things, as can the circumstances in which people prepare and eat it. Since long before film was invented, food has held an important place in all kinds of art all over the world.

Food is a basic human need, so it can serve many different roles in movies. Whether characters are discovering new dishes, pouring their hearts into meals for others or sharing food, there are endless potential connotations. Most of the time, movies can make food look extremely appealing using sight and sound alone. Animated movies tend to be especially good at this. Food scenes can create a visceral response, since evoking different flavors...

Why Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Is a Complicated Classic
Image
Before the fourth and fifth film in the Indiana Jones series, fans mostly agreed on which movie was the worst. Yet Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom has a complicated legacy that goes beyond fan opinion. It's the most important chapter as far as defining who Indiana Jones is and what makes him a hero. However, in trying to capture the sensibilities of the old Republic serials that inspired the character, the film veers into deeply problematic territory.

The Temple of Doom is a prequel and chronologically Indy's earliest adventure (the opening to The Last Crusade and The Young Indiana Jones Adventures notwithstanding). George Lucas and Steven Spielberg set the story earlier in time and half a world away from the nascent Third Reich -- also ensuring Karen Allen's Marion Ravenwood can't return. Christian mysticism is replaced in the story by a fantastical interpretation of the Thuggee cult,...

Rituraj Singh and Shah Rukh Khan’s debut film ‘In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones’
Image
Rituraj Singh, who passed away at the age of 59 in the wee hours of Tuesday, was a member of Tag, the same Delhi theatre group as Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan. The two used to rehearse together and play football. And they acted together in Shah Rukh Khan’s debut film ‘In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones’.

Aired in 1989, it was made for Doordarshan by filmmaker-environmentalist Pradip Kishen based on Booker Prize-winning novelist Arundhati Roy’s script drawing heavily on her days as a student at Delhi’s School of Planning and Architecture.

Those days, Srk, despite being well-known for his pivotal role in the TV serial ‘Fauji’, was nowhere near being the super star that he was to become, so the role that he was so keen to essay went to Rituraj.

In the film, which won two National Awards (Best Feature Film in English and Best Screenplay...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
Image
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is the most contentious of the first three "Indiana Jones" movies. Director Steven Spielberg's filmmaking instincts are sharp as ever, as is Harrison Ford's charisma, and even before the mine tunnel sequence, the film moves like a roller coaster in the best way possible.

But in aping early 20th-century pulp, the film inherits their exoticized distortions of non-American cultures. "Temple of Doom" is mostly set in British-occupied India, but the villains are not these colonizers. No, Indy and co. face off against an indigenous threat: the vicious Thuggee cult that enslaves children and makes human sacrifices to the Hindu god Kali. I'm admittedly not an expert on Indian culture (nor were the writers of the movie), so I'll defer to one who is; Indian-Canadian writer Saffron Maeve has taken the film to task over at Little White Lies. Otherwise, I'll let...

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom's Criticized Banquet Scene Was Supposed To Be A Joke
Image
Steven Spielberg's 1984 blockbuster "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" is not a good movie. The pacing is strange, the central story is introduced rather late into the film, and the interior logic doesn't really stand up to scrutiny. Many also take issue with Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) as she constantly whines. Also what is the true nature of the Sankara stones, and why is it bad that Mola Ram (Amrish Puri) has them? It seems that Mola Ram and Chattar Lal (Roshan Seth) are quite evil enough merely enslaving hundreds of children to work in their mines.

"Temple of Doom" is also the bloodiest and scariest of the "Indiana Jones" movies, a quality that both Spielberg and story writer/producer George Lucas have said was inspired by their respective messy breakups at the time. While many find the movie's gore to be fun and zesty -- including this...

Why Temple Of Doom Is The Best Indiana Jones Film
Image
Eight minutes into Temple Of Doom, Indiana Jones kills someone by hurling a flaming kebab into his chest. As far as I’m aware, we hadn’t seen such a thing on screen before. Or in real life. It’s outrageous really, an insane thing to do, and to see. But all of Temple Of Doom is loopy. With Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas had made a genuinely classic film, got heaps of acclaim, and now here they were with a follow-up for which they, well, went mad. To which I say: Thank you.

Temple Of Doom is pulpier, funnier, sillier, scarier than Raiders. Each Indy outing is tonally different from the last; this one actually becomes a whole other film halfway through, switching unapologetically from knockabout farce to traumatic nightmare. And for all its faults – which, for all the film’s greatness, are admittedly plentiful – it is,...

12 Indiana Jones Villains, Ranked
Image
The Indiana Jones villains range from mildly menacing to diabolical, and each one is as memorable as the ancient artifact they're trying to get their hands on. Globe-trotting archaeologist Professor Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) has faced being hunted by Nazis and survived violent cults, and even though he's occasionally found himself coming up against the spectral and the supernatural, it's always been the human antagonists that have given him the most trouble. Greed and avarice rather than knowledge and compassion drive them, whether they want fame and notoriety like René Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark or immortality like Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

While most of Indy's rogue gallery has a desire for power, some of the villains he encounters just want to get paid for their services. The minor villains he faces may not have impressive motivations but neither do they have delusions of grandeur,...

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom Cast: Where They Are Now
Image
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom features an excellent cast of talented actors, and many of the film’s most memorable faces went on to have very successful careers after the success of this project. Temple of Doom is the second entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, following the titular protagonist as he attempts to retrieve an ancient stone that’s been stolen from a village in India by a High Priest and his followers. Just like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the movie sees Jones embark on several dangerous adventures and thrilling chases in his pursuit of this treasure.

The Indiana Jones movies are among the most popular and influential of their genre. They were majorly responsible for the boost of blockbuster adventure movies throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, with Temple of Doom, in particular, pushing the series to bolder, more dynamic heights. While it isn’t as...

Why Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom Wasn't Filmed In India
Image
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom's India setting is arguably a character unto itself, so casual viewers may be shocked to learn objections from the Indian government prevented it from being filmed there. While the production team initially planned for shooting to take place in India, requests by local officials for changes to be made to the script proved to be too much, so Steven Spielberg and crew moved production to nearby Sri Lanka. Although the move worked out, with Temple of Doom proving a financial success, the controversies that led to it are a fascinating chapter in the franchise's history.

A prequel to franchise debut Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom follows Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), kid sidekick Short Round (Ke Huy Quan), and tagalong lounge singer Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw), on a quest to save an Indian village's children from the Thuggee cult. George Lucas...

Mira Nair on Mississippi Masala’s Enduring Impact, Body Language, and That Phone Call Scene
Mira Nair at an event for IMDb First Credit (2016)
After being lost in the tendrils of rights issues for many years, Mira Nair’s 1991 masterpiece Mississippi Masala is finally being brought back to audiences with a gorgeous new 4K restoration from Janus Films. Premiering the restoration at the 2021 New York Film Festival, there’s been a euphoria surrounding this re-release in a way that’s difficult to describe. Many resurrections of lost films each year develop a fervent passion from the film-loving community, but there’s something special about what’s happening with Mississippi Masala.

Maybe it has to do with how specifically beautiful the film is. Developed with her longtime creative partner, writer Sooni Taraporevala, it’s a story of love between Mina, a brown woman, and Demetrius (Denzel Washington), a Black man, in Greenwood, Mississippi. It’s also a story of pain, as Mina has ended up in Mississippi due to the exile of Ugandan Indians that...

Film Review: Cosmopolitan (2003) by Nisha Ganatra
Image
The concept of the conservative, Indian father who has moved from India to the West but cannot seem to adjust or even let his offspring adjust to this “foreign” society has been a recurring one for cinema, with “Bend it Like Beckham” being the first that come to mind. Nisha Ganatra uses this concept as her base, but her narrative moves towards different directions, as this time the focus is the aforementioned father and not his children.

“Cosmopolitan” is screening at San Diego Asian Film Festival

The story takes place in a New Jersey suburb, where Gopal, a retired, rather conservative man finds his life in shambles as Diwali is about to start. His daughter announces that she is moving to a Mongolian yurt with her German boyfriend, while his wife informs him that she abandons him and returns to India. Shattered, depressed and ashamed, Gopal hides the fact from his family friends,...

If You're Not Watching Beecham House, You're Missing Out on Something Really Special
Image
We had planned to visit family in India this summer, but instead I'm adding my notes to these travel tips for friends. And each Sunday night, I'm watching Beecham House, which premiered last month on PBS Masterpiece for Us audiences.

Set in India, Beecham House's six episodes narrate a fact-based fiction of an Englishman living in Delhi in the late 19th century. His household includes a baby, Indians, and some British family, with interactions with Muslim neighbors, British and French troops, and the Mughals. It is written, produced, and directed by Gurinder Chadha, whose films like Blinded by the Light have astutely championed the nuances of Indian culture, featuring familial care, domesticity, coming of age, marriage, parenthood, or larger issues like racial discrimination, prejudice, and even ethnic violence. Beecham House attempts a monumental task: creating a glimpse into the complex power struggles among capitalist empires that plundered colonial India...

Exclusive: Late Night director Nisha Ganatra has signed a two-year overall deal with ABC Studios, a division of Disney Television Studios. Under the pact, Ganatra will write, direct and develop projects across all platforms through her newly launched Ladies’ Car Productions banner.

The overall deal with Ganatra follows ABC Studios’ overall pact with prolific TV episodic director Maggie Carey announced last week, part of the studio’s commitment to female directors.

Ganatra most recently directed the film Late Night, starring Emma Thompson, who was just nominated for a Golden Globe for the film, and Mindy Kaling. The film premiered at Sundance and was sold to Amazon in a record-breaking deal.

As director-producer of Amazon’s Transparent, Ganatra shared in the series’ Golden Globe win and its Emmy nomination for best comedy. Ganatra served as co-executive producer/director on Better Things with Pamela Adlon and co-executive producer/director on You Me Her.

Randeep Hooda to re-unite with Mira Nair
Almost 19 years after working together in Monsoon Wedding, filmmaker Mira Nair has found a "suitable boy" in acclaimed actor Randeep Hooda for a new web series that she is working on. According to a source in the know, Randeep will be a part of Nair's eight-episode adaptation of Vikram Seth's "A Suitable Boy".

"Yes, it's true I am working with Mira after almost 19 years and looking forward to it. It's a bit early to speak more about the series or my role," Randeep told Ians.

The actor and the New York-based filmmaker had last put their creative forces together for the 2001 film Monsoon Wedding, which depicted romantic involvements during a traditional Punjabi Hindu wedding in Delhi.

The adaptation of "A Suitable Boy", one of the longest novels ever published, was first announced by BBC in 2017 as the first period drama by the production to feature an entirely non white cast.

‘Dumbo’ Review
Stars: Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Alan Arkin, Nico Parker, Finley Hobbins, Roshan Seth, Lars Eidinger, Deobia Oparei, Joseph Gatt, Miguel Muñoz Segura | Written by Ehren Kruger | Directed by Tim Burton

Dumbo is the live-action remake of the much beloved 1941 Walt Disney film of the same name. This updated 2019 rendition is directed by famed auteur Tim Burton. Who, somewhat ironically, first established that this live-action trend by Disney could be a colossal success with his 2010 remake of Alice in Wonderland. That resulted in a monstrous ride at the box office grossing over a billion dollars. Burton progressed onto his usual mediocre cruise control with multiple box office flops and critical messes in the likes of Dark Shadows, Frankenweenie, Big Eyes and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. All undoubtedly pieces of Burton’s identifiable aesthetic but lacking the emotional flair he once had in his 80s and 90s heyday.

Does the Tim Burton?s version is able to make us fly high by its magic? Let?s find out in Dumbo movie review.

Immediate reaction when the end credits of Dumbo roll

After Frankenweenie, director Tim Burton delivers a picture that makes him, Disney, the lovers of family animation and emotional sagas happy. With a dash of extra luck, the decision makers of the Academy awards may add joy to the happiness.

‘Dumbo’: Tim Burton’s Live-Action Re-Telling of the Animated Classic Is a Marvel of Cuteness
Beetlejuice
If you prefer Burton’s big visionary swings into darkness (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman, Ed Wood, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sweeney Todd), the family-friendly Dumbo will require adjustment to the PG light. Dumbo, the baby elephant who can use his weirdly big ears to fly, still occupies the center ring in Burton’s extravagant new circus. But screenwriter Ehren Kruger, infamous for three of the five Transformers films, has transformed the plot to include a mixed bag of human characters.

Colin Farrell stars as Holt Farrier, a circus performer who...

“Dumbo” Represents A Successful New Take On The Disney Classic
The recent spate of Disney remakes has been somewhat of a mixed bag. Lately, efforts like Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book have fared better than Alice in Wonderland, for example. Now, we have Dumbo to add to the fold. Optimism may not have been too high for this one, especially with Tim Burton returning to the Disney family. However, this movie is rather charming and really entertaining. It runs almost an hour longer than the animated original, but up until the third act, really does manage not to feel overstuffed. Could the flick have lost ten minutes somewhere? Sure. Does it keep it from being a good film? Absolutely not. It’s not a classic like the original, but it deserves all the money it’s likely to make this week. The film is a live action adaptation of the Disney animated classic about a baby elephant with giant ears.

Netflix and Amazon to Go Head to Head in Competition at Second Cannes TV Festival
Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.

Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

City of Tiny Lights (Pete Travis)

Small-time private detective Tommy Akhtar (Riz Ahmed) has all the swagger of a hard-boiled snoop: leather jacket on his shoulders and cigarette in his mouth, leaning against London architecture in the darkened night. His office resides above some shops, he makes friendly with local convenience store owner Mrs. Elbaz (Myriam Acharki), and asks new clients where they found him because he’s not advertising in the paper.

Here's Your First Look at Dumbo in Tim Burton's Live-Action Adaptation with Casting and Plot Details
It was announced at Disney's D23 Expo that Tim Burton had started production on his live action adaptation of Dumbo. They also confirmed the cast, offered some story details, and even brought out a life-size prop of Dumbo to show off, which you can see above! He looks so freakin' adorable! The ears on the prop were floppy and everything! I love the character design. It's completely in line with the original design of the animated version, especially in the eyes.

In case you're wondering who will star in the film, they've got Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Eva Green, who have all previously worked with Burton. The movie also introduces Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins in their first film roles. The cast also includes Roshan Seth, DeObia Oparei, Sharon Rooney and Douglas Reith.

As far as the film's plot goes, here's the synopsis that was released:

‘City of Tiny Lights’ Review
Stars: Riz Ahmed, Billie Piper, James Floyd, Roshan Seth, Cush Jumbo | Written by Patrick Neate | Directed by Pete Travis

I could watch Riz Ahmed in almost anything, but there are limits, tested here by this deeply mediocre British mystery thriller. Adapted by Patrick Neate from his 2005 novel, City of Tiny Lights is helmed by Pete Travis, who in 2012 nearly rescued Judge Dredd from comic book movie hell. But while Travis transposes some of Dredd’s style, he cannot bring its boldness, humour or efficiency.

Ahmed plays Tommy Akhtar, a “snoop” who is so underground that even his job description is unclear. Basically, he’s a private detective. One day he’s visited by a working woman named Melody (Cush Jumbo). Her flatmate is missing. Tommy investigates and finds the body of a Pakistani businessman. It’s a discovery that will bring him into close contact with two blasts from his...
