New Releases Curiosity of the Week Detention (Sony) - Blu-ray and DVD Release Date: Apr 13, 2012 Director: Joseph Kahn Cast: Josh Hutcherson, Spencer Locke, Dane Cook, Walter Perez, Erica Shaffer. Full cast + crew Detention is a fascinating movie. Regardless if you hate it or love it, there's no denying this is an interesting movie that gets people talking. It's not the straight horror-comedy its high school-slasher setup seems, and is more an arthouse film made for, and by, the MTV generation. If the sheer idea of that seeming contradiction is enough to steer you off, you're probably not going to like Kahn's experiment in rapid-fire nostalgia for golden age of the '90s. But, if you are game for a...

At first glance, Joseph Kahn's Detention looks, as I've said before, like it might be just a "post-Scream meta-slasher movie." But the trailer [1] we saw for the film suggested that it is a lot more than that, or at least a lot more crazy than that. Reviews out of SXSW, where the film premiered, were slightly mixed, but the enthusiastic ones were very enthusiastic. In short, I'm hoping that Detention will be a movie that can satiate my hunger for a wild genre movie in the same way that Attack the Block satisfies as a teen-oriented summer sci-fi thriller. We'll all get to see Detention sometime in the coming months thanks to Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, which has picked up all rights to distribute the film. A press release and a THR [2] news break offer up the news, and the press release giddily repeats one summarization of the film: "an apocalyptic,...

...Or we should say "Cheat Sheets" since this year's SXSW Film Festival boasts over 140 films, requiring more than just one page to cover every single one of the narrative and documentary features that will be playing in Austin from March 11th through 19th. While the festival has already provided a very helpful schedule to flip through and Pdf of the screening grid online, consider this your quick hit guide to all the features at the festival - every title leads to its corresponding festival page in addition to links to trailers, official sites, filmmakers' Facebook pages and Twitter accounts so you can follow the action from the festival or from home.
Meanwhile, there will be plenty of action during these next two weeks on IFC.com where, in addition to our live video page, Matt Singer (@mattsinger) and I (@mfrushmore) will be filing reviews and interviews throughout the film festival.

The Detention Movie Trailer has premiered. Joseph Kahn‘s Detention (2011) stars Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke, Aaron David Johnson, Walter Perez, Erica Shaffer, Parker Bagley, and Alison Woods. Detention (2011)’s plot synopsis: “a teen horror-comedy where the local students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. It becomes a race against time to stop the killer and save the world – if only they can get out of detention. The Detention cuts through prom. Most of them don’t have dates anyway.” One of the things that is hilarious about this movie trailer is that director Joseph Kahn makes fun of one of his previous films, Torque. The high school students actually seem to be high school student age in this horror comedy film and very Dawson’s Creek self aware.

Torque director Joseph Kahn has made a very strange-looking teen slasher movie called Detention. The film will soon premiere at SXSW, and the trailer has arrived today. While the opening of the trailer might make you think this is a routine post-Scream meta-slasher movie, be sure to watch all the way through. Because this one goes to some unexpected places by the end. If nothing else, the trailer sells Detention's very high 'Wtf?' factor, and that's pretty great. MTV [1] presents the trailer, and at first I was a little put off. There's an opening gag about Torque, which is fun, and Holy Fuck's song 'Frenchy's' [2] drew me in. But there's a good little bit of high school drama and politics to set up, and that bit of the trailer isn't cut so well. But then it goes off the rails with shots of murder, aliens, and all sorts of other weirdness.

Daniel Baldwin (Grey Gardens), Emmy nominated John Heard (The Pelican Brief) and Brendan Sexton III (Black Hawk Down) will star in a story about a hostage taking in an "upscale home by a volatile intruder" (Maverick). Tis good to see Baldwin in a larger performance after his cameo in Nine Dead. More details below.

A Family Affair
Opened
Friday, May 9
Writing, directing, editing and starring in her first feature, Helen Lesnick makes a strong case for delegating responsibility with "A Family Affair", a forced romantic comedy about a Jewish lesbian who's torn between two lovers.
Unlike the title character in last year's "Kissing Jessica Stein", Lesnick's Rachel Rosen isn't at all conflicted about her sexual identity -- she knows exactly what she's searching for, and it's her "Ms. Rightowitz".
But also unlike the charming "Kissing", the Lesnick variation suffers from inexperienced filmmaking and a self-absorbed lead character who fails to elicit any truly tangible degree of audience sympathy.
While Lesnick's ambition is admirable, the end result will fail to cater to viewers beyond the big-city gay and lesbian milieu.
Fleeing New York after a traumatic breakup with her last girlfriend, Lesnick's wise-cracking Rachel takes refuge at the San Diego home of her parents, the tireless, smothering Leah (Arlene Golonka) and her supportive hubby, Sam (Michael Moerman), a man of very, very few words.
With Mom keeping busy with various PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) activities, Rachel bides her time going on a dispiriting series of blind dates -- until one fateful evening when she hooks up with Christine (Erica Shaffer), a sweet massage therapist.
The two initially hit it off, with the smitten Christine even going as far as taking conversion classes to become a perfect Jewish wife, but mopey Rachel is dragging her feet. It seems she still carries a torch for her ex, Reggie (Michele Greene), who has popped up in California and is determined to win Rachel back.
It might have been easier to overlook Lesnick's awkwardly staged scenes if she had been able to make the self-centered Rachel a little more likable. As it stands, it's hard to see why the adoring Christine would be attracted to her in the first place, unless it was that caustic wit that the other characters keep mentioning.
On the performance front -- with the film's budget-conscious mix of professional, amateur and nonactors -- there's a whole lot of mugging going on, with the notable exceptions of Shaffer and Greene, who broke some TV ground back in 1991 with a same-sex kiss (with Amanda Donohoe) on "L.A. Law".
As the unstoppable Reggie, Greene is a bright burst of energy in this otherwise labored "Affair".

Film review: 'Catalina Trust' Lessons in a Desert Inn / First-time director Will Conroy employs familiar formula in charming 'Catalina'
Wil Conroy's debut feature is the latest in a long line of fish-out-of-water movies in which a self-absorbed yuppie learns the error of his ways by immersing himself in a different, laid-back culture.
Although not exactly surprising in its plot developments, the film -- which recalls such efforts as "Local Hero" and the indie "Sweet Lorraine" -- makes the formula work yet again. "Catalina Trust" was a crowd-pleaser at the Nantucket Film Festival, where it received its world premiere.
The protagonist is Marshall (Jay Harrington), an up-and-coming Manhattan marketer who's about to marry a rich debutante, the beautiful Kitty (Erica Shaffer), and move into a luxury apartment. The death of his grandfather, the proprietor of an old-fashioned inn in Arizona, derails his plans. Informed that he's due for a rich inheritance on the condition that he travel to Arizona to settle his grandfather's affairs, Marshall reluctantly makes the trip, accompanied by his jovial foster brother Freddie (David Vegh), who has only recently graduated from law school.
In Tucson, Ariz., the two young men are introduced to the luxurious hotel and its staffers, including Siobhan (Arabella Holzbog), the grandfather's beautiful and strong-willed Irish secretary. Needless to say, the employees and longtime guests are a colorful lot (a chef who rebels against making club sandwiches and a trio of dotty old ladies, among others), and the inn is a magnificent, old-fashioned establishment based on traditional rules of service.
Marshall, aided by a smooth-talking lawyer (John Shea), attempts to take over the place so it can be torn down for a shopping mall -- and soon finds himself haunted by the ghost of his grandfather. You can well imagine the remaining plot developments.
Director-screenwriter Conroy is clearly working from the heart and has filmed his tale at the Arizona Inn, a real hotel that in fact has been in his family for decades. The atmosphere of the establishment and the picturesque Arizona locations add greatly to the film's impact, which is otherwise marred by a tentativeness and unevenness in its storytelling. The filmmaker is perhaps so close to his story that he has neglected to fill it in with the proper texture.
We never clearly see why Marshall falls in love with the hotel or with the fiery Siobhan, for example, and the lack of delineation in his transformation -- the central element of the story -- reduces the film's impact greatly. And the melodramatic plot developments involving the lawyer's shady manipulations and the true relationship between the foster brothers are awkwardly handled and staged.
To its credit, the film doesn't take itself too seriously, and like its central location, it possesses a great deal of charm. Harrington and Holzbog are an attractive romantic team, and Vegh is a consistent delight as the wisecracking brother. Shea brings a smooth charm to the role of the lawyer, and Shaffer is so appealing as Kitty that she almost throws the film's romantic triangle off balance.
Some notable progeny are involved here. Director-screenwriter Conroy is the son of famed novelist Pat Conroy ("The Prince of Tides"), while one of the executive producers, Michael Mailer, is the son of Norman.
