Legendary scream queens Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Deborah Dutch (Hard to Die), and Courtney Lercara (Slaughterhouse) have joined the cast of writer/director Bobby Canipe Jr.’s upcoming horror project Grandma, a tribute to the shot-on-video horrors of the 1980s and ’90s! In Lercara’s case, this means she will be earning her first screen credit in thirty years, as she last appeared in the anthology Things back in 1993.
To ensure that Grandma will perfectly emulate the look and feel of the shot-on-video movies of the past, Canipe has brought on a dream team of executive producers and creative consultants that consists of multiple Sov filmmakers: Donald Farmer, Dustin Ferguson, Mark Polonia, Joel Wynkoop, Todd Sheets, Gary Cohen, Tim Ritter, Brad Sykes, and Eric Stanze. Scott Appleby will be providing the required original synth score.

I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of filmmaker Todd Sheets; the last film of his I saw was Bonehill Road and that just cemented my knowledge that Sheets’ particular brand of low-budget filmmaking was not for me – even if his 2019 film Clownado had a lot of fans, even our very own Chris Cummings. So why am I reviewing his 1994 shot-on-video film Moonchild? Well because, like every fanboy-come-hipster film lover I collect boutique label releases and the more obscure the films they release the better and Moonchild is part of Wild Eye Releasing’s new Blu-ray label Visual Vengeance, so as a completist I had to add this to my collection – even if it took a month or so for the disc to show up, making this review late!

Cannibalism, torture, gory sex and meaty subtexts are all on the menu at a dinner party held by an arrogant local MP
Set and shot in Wales, with dialogue in Welsh (apart from a few loan words from English and the occasional Anglo-Saxon cuss), this is a striking, reasonably original wodge of folk horror. It also represents an auspicious first feature for director Lee Haven Jones (he’s shot a few Doctor Who episodes and the like), working from a script by writer-producer Roger Williams. Said screenplay adroitly incorporates meaty subtexts about class and generational tension, the evils of contemporary land management, and sexual abuse, while still ensuring there’s plenty of screen time devoted to cannibalism, torture and very gory forms of sex.
The feast of the title is a dinner party that arrogant local MP Gwyn (Julian Lewis Jones) and his preening, social-climbing wife Glenda (Nia Roberts) are...

Annes Elwy in The Feast
Welsh language films which enjoy international success are rare beasts, genre ones even more so, so it’s no surprise that the festival success of The Feast has got people talking. There’s a lot to admire in this finely crafted film, which we first caught when it screened at last year’s Beyondfest. It tells the story of a dinner party held in celebration of an environmentally dubious deal which is waited on by a young woman who is not what she appears. Themes around class, capitalism and the relationship between people and land collide with ancient tradition and otherworldly cruelty.
Playing that unusual young woman, Cadi, is Annes Elwy, and she and director Lee Haven Jones joined me for a chat ahead of the film finally making it into UK cinemas. Lee began by telling me how the film, which was scripted by Roger Williams,...

This is a tough review to do for two reasons. The first is that it’s not one film, but eight. The second is that I am so far out of the target audience I would simple never have watched this or thought about watching this if I weren’t reviewing it. With that in mind, this won’t be my personal view of what this collection is, but a reflection of what it’s trying to be.
Hi-8: Horror Independent Eight is a project given to eight directors. The idea is to create a short movie using absolutely no technology from the post-Internet age, so no HD cameras, digital effects or found footage. The purpose was to try and recreate the feeling of watching an old style shot on video horror flick from the 80’s,...

Veteran low-budget show-on-video horror legend Todd Sheets sits back in his directors chair for Clownado, his new horror flick that he also wrote. Now, I’ve seen a bunch of Sheets films in the past, so I was excited to check this one out, his gory story of demonic clowns who embark upon a massacre with the use of… well, tornadoes of course. I mean, the sound of that alone was enough for me to double-shot my coffee cup, grab some snacks and sit in the dark with a big dumb grin on my face, ready to see Sheets in action again.

I’m a longtime fan of horror anthology films. I think it goes back to my love of short fiction, something I still really love to this day, and being able to get a snapshot of a story, a quick, often deliberate, sometimes hectic, slice of the chosen genre. Horror is a genre I’ve had a extended love affair with, and so mixing those two things together is a big plus for me. Bonehill Road
Stars: Eli DeGeer, Ana Rojas-Plumberg, Linnea Quigley, Millie Milan, Dilynn Fawn Harvey, Gary Kent, Douglas Epps | Written and Directed by Todd Sheets
Name: Bonehill Road
Age: 2018
Appearance: A low budget, gory horror directed by indie veteran Todd Sheets featuring practical effects, blood and guts. About a mother and daughter escaping an abusive relationship and falling prey to a cannibalistic sadist who kidnaps and tortures women. It’s a werewolf film.
Bonehill Road not Boner Road
So, where’s the werewolf?
Good question. They turn up at the beginning and at the end. Basically, mother and daughter Emily and Eden Stevens (played by Eli DeGeer and Ana Plumberg) escape a violent home and run into a werewolf, whereupon they escape and find themselves trapped by psychopath Coen Anders until the werewolves arrive at the end.
So, it’s a case of “where wolf?” Hahahaha!

Remember going to video store in the 90s and finding some weird bizarre horror film, taking it home and discovering it was a shot-on-video (Sov) sleazefest made by a bunch of guys on the weekend? Whilst they never really took off here in the UK, there’s a Huge fan following for Sov films and filmmakers in the Us – guys like Todd Sheets, the Polonia Brothers and Tim Ritter… And with the return of VHS as a film format, it was inevitable that shot-on-video would also return. And that’s exactly what director Matt Watts has done with his Sov inspired gore flick Fatal Premonitions, a shot on video horror anthology.
Staring Kyle Valmassy, featuring Sarah French and a special guest appearance from Sov legend Mark Polonia, Fatal Premonitions will not disappoint fans of the goriest of the shot on video flicks, with Matt Watts successfully capturing the look and...

Todd Sheets is known among Shot on Video fans as the prince of gore… Back in June, Srs Cinema released an exclusive limited edition Bluray and VHS of his earliest works in a short compilation called Sheets of Gore. Apparently that previous release was so successful that Srs Cinema have announced a new limited DVD edition only available at www.srscinema.com
Gore master Todd Sheets has been piling on the blood and guts for nearly 3 decades, with such shot on video cult classics as “Zombie Bloodbath”, “Goblin”, “Violent New Breed” and many more, and more recently with hits like “House of Forbidden Secrets” and “Dreaming Purple Neon”. Now see where the gore began with Todd’s earliest shorts in the compilation video! Warning: Not for the squeamish or faint of heart!
The Sheets of Gore DVD is a one disc release featuring 93 mins of select shorts from the limited editions.

Todd Sheets is quite possibly the best known director among the shot on video filmmakers of the 1990’s. His work garnered a huge following despite budget shortcomings, thanks largely to the buckets of blood he heaped upon viewers in each and every motion picture he made. But like all filmmakers, Todd had to start somewhere, …

Hi-8: Horror Independent 8 is a project given to eight directors. The idea is to create a short movie using absolutely no technology from the post-Internet age, so no HD cameras, digital effects or found footage. The purpose was to try and recreate the feeling of watching an old style shot on video horror flick from the 80’s,...

Finally the trailer is here for Nightfall Pictures and Twisted Illusions' new anthology film Hi-8 (which stands for Horror. Independent. 8 Filmmakers), and we we have it here for you dripping with indie horror goodness.
From the Press Release
Hi-8 is produced by Brad Sykes, Josephina Sykes, and Tim Ritter. The directors’ lineup is Tim Ritter (Truth or Dare), Brad Sykes (Camp Blood), Marcus Koch (100 Tears), Ron Bonk (The Vicious Sweet), Donald Farmer (Savage Vengeance), Todd Sheets (Zombie Bloodbath), Chris Seaver (Filthy McNasty), and Tony Masiello (Sov: The True Independents).
Producer Brad Sykes got the idea for the anthology while working on Srs Cinema’s upcoming VHS/DVD release of his feature The Pact, which was shot on the Hi-8 format back in 1995 while Sykes was still a college student. He missed those days of carefree filmmaking and approached Tim Ritter with the idea, who already had the Hi-8 title and concept ready to go.

With the demise of the drive-in theater rose the behemoth home video industry – and a torch was passed from one era of low-budget directors and producers to a new batch of underfunded fringe filmmakers. These fresh faces had new technology, and a new distribution game… but a similar reckless abandon and rebellious tenacity as their b-movie forefathers.
Fright fans were introduced to a new breed of horror movies - made for tens of thousands of dollars… or thousands of dollars… or a few hundred bucks and a borrowed video camera. Unpaid amateurs / quasi-professionals made up the bulk of most casts and crews - and often, the directors and producers were quite inexperienced themselves.
Join me for a visit to the heyday of the direct-to-video, micro-budget horror movie. We’ll explore this strange new cinema of the 80s and see how it evolved through the ‘90s. (Be sure to adjust tracking for best picture quality.

Directors Brian Gaillard and Daniel Murphy and Hm&M Films’ nifty slasher “And Then You Die” is a low-budget horror flick that gleefully channels some of the shot-on-video genre flicks perpetrated by the likes of Todd Sheets and Tim Ritter. The body count is high, the story is stronger than most, and the directors work wonders with the money they had at their disposable. As far as microbudget horror is concerned, the flick is one hell of a directorial debut. Chuck Smith stars as Sam Wallace, a car salesman who is about to embark on one of the worst days of his life. Not only is his wife (Ellie Church) having an affair, he’s also on the cusp of losing his job. When the poor guy’s car runs out of gas on a rural road, things really start to unravel. Although Sam does his best to keep a level head,...

A little while back, I had the distinctive honor of talking to horror film director Nick Millard, the genius behind Criminally Insane, Death Nurse, and dozens of other wonderful films. Mister Millard has been in the biz since the 1960s, starting out making sexploitation films like Uta and Nympho. In 1975 he went into horror with Criminally Insane, and in 1977 he made action movie history with .357 Magnum. Nick has always been one of my all-time favorite directors, ranking with Norbert Moutier, Todd Sheets, James Bryan, and Doris Wishman, so I had to restraint my inner fanboy to bring these words to print. Take it away, Nick!
Adam Mudman – I’ll kick things off in the best way possible; by asking how you got your start. How did this all begin? How were you raised, and how did it impact your decision to become a filmmaker?
Nick Millard – I remember how it started.

Hey there, Fiends! Oh man! Tons to mention this time around! First of all, I just returned from the killer Motor City Nightmares convention, and what can I say? It was not only a kick-ass time, but it also made some nightmares come true.
First of all, I met one of my absolute favorite people in cinema, P.J. Soles, and I was a little taken aback by her presence, to be quite honest. It was truly surreal. While there I also set up show dates with class acts such as Bill Moseley, Ken Foree, Tony Todd, and Matt Farnsworth and Diane Foster - the creators of the brutal indie masterpiece called The Orphan Killer! Having finally watched the film all the way through, all I can say is holy shit! If you have Not seen the Orphan Killer, please do yourselves a huge favor - seek it out!
Now, on to the show!
