Exclusive: Echo Lake Entertainment has signed actress Vritika Gupta (Under the Bridge) for management in all areas. She continues to be represented by Jt Thornton at The Library Agency.
Gupta’s most recent credit is playing the heartbreaking role of Reena Virk in the limited series Under The Bridge for ABC Signature (now 20th Television) and Hulu. Set in Victoria, Canada, in 1997, the series tells the haunting true story of the disappearance and murder of 15-year-old Reena, based on Rebecca Godfrey’s acclaimed book of the same name.
Her work on the series, opposite Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough, has inspired her to look for anti-bullying and wellness organizations to become involved with, something she feels is “really important” in today’s society. Under the Bridge was created by Quinn Shephard, with Samir Mehta and Liz Tigelear serving as showrunners.

In Hulu limited series Under the Bridge, adapted from the book by Rebecca Godfrey, Riley Keough plays journalist Godfrey, as she returns to her hometown to look into the real-life murder of a local girl, 14-year-old Reena Virk. Opposite Keough, Lily Gladstone stars as investigating police officer Cam Bentland, with whom Godfrey has a complicated history. Here, Keough explains how together, the actors explored Godfrey’s “radical empathy” around the murder, and how Keough and her producing partner Gina Gammell collaborated with creator Quinn Shephard and showrunner Samir Mehta to tell a complex and nuanced story.
Deadline: Rebecca Godfrey is such an interesting writer and tragically she passed away before Under the Bridge got made. How did you come to understand who she was?
Riley Keough: Yeah, she’s incredibly fascinating. Well, first I hadn’t heard about the story or Rebecca, and I hadn’t read her book...

When actress and producer Riley Keough received the first episode of Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” she was apprehensive. Keough wanted to make sure this story was more than just entertainment and the story wasn’t an exploitative one. “I’m really trying to be thoughtful about what I’m putting into the world,” she tells Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast.
The limited true crime series follows the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old girl in Saanich Core, British Columbia. After attending a party with her “friends” near the infamous Craigflower Bridge, Reena never returns home.
Keough plays Rebecca Godfrey, a real-life journalist who penned a book of the same name. In “Under the Bridge,” Rebecca travels back to the area for a story and ends up working alongside a cop (played by Lily Gladstone) investigating the beating and attack.

It’s a Thursday morning and I’m barely awake when my phone greets me with a disturbing response to the fourth episode of Under the Bridge: tweet after tweet expressing anger, even hatred, toward Reena Virk. Someone saying, “I’m not even mad she gets killed.”
I’m upset, but I wish I could say that I’m surprised.
Quinn Shephard
Sometime around 2004, as the Under the Bridge book I adapted was being published, Rebecca Godfrey made the decision not to include the story of how Reena ended up in foster care. She was concerned that this particular fact would make Reena too unlikable to garner sympathy from a reader. This choice, within the context of a book that largely relied on readers’ ability to sympathize with Reena’s murderers, is worth examining. No doubt pressured by the media environment at the time, which had even less tact...

There aren’t enough Native women on TV. But when they do get hired, they’re often playing cops.
“Not to take away from the performances of all these actresses, who I admire so much and are doing a beautiful job,” says Lily Gladstone, “but it’s almost the only role that we get to see.”
So it’s understandable that Gladstone had something of a checklist in hand when she first met with the producers of “Under the Bridge.” They were offering her the role of Cam Bentland, a police officer investigating the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old child of Indian immigrants in Saanich Core, British Columbia.
Cam, a Native woman adopted by a family of white cops, was the invention of series creator Quinn Shephard. Though realistic, the character is fictional; but the homicide at the center of the project is not. Often in the true crime genre,...

On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 13 creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, the event is a new edition of previous IndieWire Honors ceremonies, this time focused entirely on television. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles celebration.
Coming off what would ultimately become her Emmy-nominated role as Daisy Jones in Prime Video’s conversation-dominating “Daisy Jones & The Six” miniseries, Keough wasn’t sure of her next move.
The actress, who will receive the Maverick Award at IndieWire Honors, was immersed in her production company, Felix Culpa, and her debut co-writing and co-directing feature, “War Pony,” received the Caméra d’Or at Cannes. There were paths to go down — but a true tale about the horrific murder of Canadian teenager Reena Virk didn’t seem like the obvious choice.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Mercy Alone,” the series finale of “Under the Bridge.”
“Under the Bridge” doesn’t have “a traditional ending,” says showrunner Samir Mehta.
After the penultimate episode of the true crime limited series saw Warren Glowatski (Javon Walton) sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), in the finale, the white, wealthy Kelly Ellard (Izzy G) received only a five-year sentence despite having been the ringleader.
“Justice wasn’t really served in real life, so it couldn’t ever be that type of story where you get to the finale and the bad people go away,” Mehta says. Instead, the episode focuses more on the characters “finding their best shot at peace and finding a little bit of grace in their suffering. Exhibiting a bit of mercy isn’t ever going to make the horror go away,...

Hulu’s Under the Bridge, which is based on Rebecca Godfrey’s (portrayed by Riley Keough) book, tells the real-life story of the 1997 murder/killing of 14-year-old Reena Virk (portrayed by Vritika Gupta). The cast, led by Lily Gladstone and Keough, does an extraordinary job handling the subject matter respectfully while all giving remarkable performances.
To get some more insight into the adaptation, Den of Geek spoke with showrunner/executive producer Quinn Shephard and executive producer Samir Mehta about how they approached Kelly’s (played by Izzy G.) trial and the show’s last scene.

Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for the finale of Hulu’s “Under the Bridge.”
You expect a true crime tale about a murder to end with a conviction, but for the family of the murdered to forgive the guilty party? That’s much less common.
“I think it’s truly the most interesting detail about this entire story, that the Virks not only said to Warren that they forgave him, but that they literally advocated on his behalf and his parole hearing and helped to support him in his transition and to work with restorative justice,” “Under the Bridge” creator Quinn Shephard told IndieWire. “I mean, it’s an immense strength.”
In the finale of Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” which aired May 29, viewers finally see a group of teenagers — particularly Kelly (Izzy G.) and Warren (Javon Walton) — held accountable for killing teenage classmate Reena Virk, and get sentenced.

Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta have been working on the Hulu series Under the Bridge for years. Shephard developed the series with Rebecca Godfrey, who wrote the book of the same name. Godfrey passed away in October 2022 right before production on the series began. Mehta was the showrunner and ran the writers’ room. They both were executive producers and writers on the show. “The jobs we had on this show are typically one person,” Shephard laughs. “And we kind of had to merge into one person in order to do this.”...

Perhaps no actor received a greater injection of exposure and career boost during the awards season just past than did Lily Gladstone, the Indigenous performer who won SAG Award and Golden Globe trophies along with an Oscar nomination for her standout performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.” While she lost the Academy Award for Best Actress to Emma Stone for “Poor Things,” Gladstone benefited tremendously, significantly elevating her stature after entering the campaign as a relative unknown. “I think I’m probably not going to fully metabolize it for years,” she says. “What’s cool is that you develop this camaraderie with people who are going through it with you, and there’s this collective relief when you get to see each other on the other side of it all. Hulu’s “Under the Bridge,” which premiered on the streamer last month, could be another drop in the true-crime dead-girl television canon of which there are many varying outings, until it swerves into another direction when telling the horrific true story of Reena Virk. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s book of the same name, in 1997 the 14-year-old Virk was murdered by a group of teenagers in British Columbia, Canada, after previously being bullied at school.
The television show, helmed by Quinn Shephard and Samir Mehta, delves into Godfrey’s book about Virk’s murder with Riley Keough playing Godfrey and Lily Gladstone as Cam, a fictional character who is a police officer and Godfrey’s estranged friend from high school, who both investigate the Virk case.
In wanting to create a fleshed out show, and to pay respects to Virk, Shephard and Mehta used Godfrey’s book as a jumping off point.

It’s a Hollywood cliche you have to hire the nicest actors to play the meanest people, and on “Under the Bridge” a group of struggling, lonely teens committing violent crimes certainly qualifies.
Unlike other shows about teens, where the cast is pushing 30, the kids on Hulu’s miniseries all are played by actors aged 12 to 16. This created a few challenges during production, due to the dark true-life plot, which centers on small-town British Columbia and the kids who assault and kill their classmate Reena Virk one night, and then basically all cover for each other while the case unfolds.

Under the Bridge unravels the true story of teen Reena Virk’s (Vritika Gupta) murder in late-’90s British Columbia, plucking the narrative from Rebecca Godfrey’s novel of the same name, but when it comes to Hulu‘s adaptation, the inclusion of Rebecca (Riley Keough) as a character as well as cop Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone) are new elements for the story itself. Despite Godfrey not being a featured character in the book, Keough had a wealth of information to pull from. “For my character anyway, there was so much about Rebecca. I was lucky that I had a lot of resources,” she points out. “I had poems she wrote and videos and photos and all these things to sort of get a sense of who she was.” Disney / PictureGroup Godfrey died roughly a week after Hulu picked up Under the Bridge to series but had worked for two...

How does a fight between a group of teenagers result in murder?

The show, created by Quinn Shephard, tells the story of the events that unfolded through the lens of Godfrey (Riley Keough), a journalist who grew up in Victoria and was working on a novel about teenage girls in her hometown when she found out about the murder, and Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone), a local police officer who investigated and solved the case.

When Quinn Shephard (indie hit “Blame” and internet satire “Not Okay”) set out to adapt Rebecca Godfrey’s bestselling narrative non-fiction book “Under the Bridge,” about the 1997 murder of teenager Reena Virk, one key aspect of the book stood out to her beyond the crime.
“I was so struck by how gentle [the book] was,” Shephard told IndieWire during a recent interview. “And there was a real sensitivity to the way that it approached the holistic story, as well as all of the characters. It was a very beautiful book; it was very poetic. I was really shocked that a story that was so dark and so brutal could have so much tenderness. [It’s] really a story of childhood and coming of age.”

A year and a half ago, Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough were still relative unknowns about to hit the big time when they were cast together in the eight-episode Hulu true-crime thriller “Under the Bridge.” Gladstone would steal the show in the Martin Scorsese epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” earning an Oscar nomination and a SAG Award win. Keough, famously the eldest grandchild of Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley, landed Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for her starring role in the Prime Video limited series “Daisy Jones and the Six.” In a Zoom interview this week for the “Under the Bridge” premiere on Hulu with its writer-creator Quinn Shephard and showrunner Samir Mehta, Mehta described landing Gladstone and Keough in the follow-up project to their big breakthrough as “literally kismet.”

In 1997, the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk by a fellow group of British Columbia teens sparked a media frenzy, and the ensuing scrutiny shed a spotlight on the problem of bullying and violence among girls. But Hulu’s new true-crime series Under the Bridge, inspired by Rebecca Godfrey’s 2005 nonfiction book, digs deeper into the complex realities behind the sensational Canadian killing and the media blindspots about race, class, xenophobia, and poverty that underpinned it. “It’s a more feminine and sensitive take on a crime story that reckons with the trauma of childhood,” says creator Quinn Shephard during a recent Zoom interview, alongside showrunner Samir Mehta. “It’s about understanding how and why violence like this occurs in youth and what steps we need to take to break those cycles.” The drama, which stars Killers of the Flower Moon Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone and Daisy Jones & The Six’s Riley Keough,...

Officer Cam Bentland, played by Lily Gladstone in Hulu’s eight-part crime drama “Under the Bridge,” is tired. Not tired in the way that a good nap can fix, nor is she merely bored of her job with the Saanich police. “Weary” would be a better word for the drained disposition with which she carries herself, whether she’s helping her father (and captain) hit the punching bag or listening to yet another complaint about wayward teens. It’s during the latter that something clicks. A girl is missing, and even though runaway high schoolers are a routine occurrence around the greater Victoria area, hearing her brother (also a cop) refer to the young woman as a “bic girl” sparks Cam to action. “Bic,” referencing the cheap lighters found on gas station counters, is local slang for recalcitrant teens who have no one looking out for them.

Plot: based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the 1997 true story of fourteen-year-old Reena Virk who went to join friends at a party and never returned home. Through the eyes of Godfrey and a local police officer, the series takes us into the hidden world of the young girls accused of the murder — revealing startling truths about the unlikely killer.
Review: While crime exists worldwide, North America’s glut of true crime stories is centered on the United States. We often take for granted that our neighbors in the Great White North are more than America’s nice neighbors or denizens of the Fifty-First State. Canada is a massive country with its own good and bad, with crimes just as heinous as anything we see in America. While the events depicted in Under The Bridge are not as scary as serial killer tales, the story it retells is every bit as disturbing.

The star-studded casting of Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in Hulu’s Under the Bridge, as it turns out, all started in the DMs.
The series, which counts Keough as an executive producer, is based on the true story of Reena Virk, a 14-year-old girl who was beaten and murdered by a group of teenagers in Canada in 1997. Keough stars as Rebecca Godfrey, who investigated and wrote a book on the tragedy, with Gladstone as a local police officer trying to solve the case.
At the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, Gladstone recalled forming a bond with Keough in 2017 as they ran in the same Hollywood circles, when she was promoting Certain Women and the Daisy Jones & The Six star was releasing American Honey.
“I was aware of her work, anyway, but I feel like being in each other’s orbit then, I became very curious about who this talent was.

Deep into Hulu’s Under the Bridge, author Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) defends the focus of her latest manuscript. “People can do horrible things, and that doesn’t make them inherently evil,” she insists. As she sees it, her book is simply challenging the reader to consider that an individual’s humanity is not defined by their worst deed.
It’s a big ask considering the subject in question has been charged with murder — but potentially a worthy one too, not least because the accused is just a teenager. Unfortunately, it’s also one Under the Bridge does not actually have the nerve to tackle head-on. Despite some moving performances (particularly from its young cast), the writing ultimately proves too vague and too muddled in its messaging to shed new light on much of anything.

Lily Gladstone, creator and EP Quinn Shephard and showrunner/executive producer Samir Mehta joined Deadline’s Contenders TV to discuss their Hulu series Under the Bridge. Based on Rebecca Godfrey’s account of the murder of Reena Virk, all three said they were careful not to sensationalize Virk’s death.
“A lot of times, the human element, particularly the people who suffered the most are the ones who get erased,” Gladstone said. “The thing that happened to them becomes a sensationalized thing for the media and then it becomes something for consumption.”
Gladstone added that her movie Killers of the Flower Moon, for which she was Oscar nominated, faced the same issue. She felt Martin Scorsese’s film was aware of this dynamic, indicting itself for making a work of art about a real-life tragedy, too.

Lily Gladstone is getting sent down “Under the Bridge” to see about this murder.
Gladstone is following up her Academy Award-nominated breakout performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” with “Under the Bridge,” a Hulu limited series premiering April 17. Hulu released a trailer for the gloomy true crime drama on Monday.
The trailer, with its eerie score, dark dialogue about missing and murdered young women, and focus on an uneasy partnership between two investigators, feels like it could be part of the “True Detective” universe. Gladstone plays a local cop haunted by the unsolved murder of a teenage girl, and Riley Keough (who also serves as executive producer) plays a journalist writing a book on the case.

Who killed Reena Virk? The teenager’s murder and subsequent investigation are at the heart of the new crime series “Under the Bridge.” Hulu’s limited series adapts Rebecca Godfrey’s book about the crime, a case that would shock Canada during the late ’90s. 29-year-old wunderkind writer/director Quinn Shephard heads up the project, also acting as executive producer. The multi-hyphenate previously helmed the dramedy-thriller film “Not Okay.”

There’s nothing like New York City during Christmas: the packed streets of Soho and Midtown, the tourist-dense holiday market in Bryant Park, the unexpected bursts of snow.
There’s magic in the air, no doubt, but chaos too, as is evident in “Something From Tiffany’s,” a new streaming Christmas romantic comedy, a genre already rich in entries. A mix-up between two boyfriends at the iconic jewelry store Tiffany leads to a mix-up for the ages: one woman’s engagement ring winds up on the wrong hand.
At the helm of “Something From Tiffany’s” is ingenue du jour Zoey Deutch (“Not Okay”) as Rachel, a strong-willed, career-oriented baker who tolerates her longtime tattoo artist boyfriend Gary. He’s often disappointing her — showing up late or missing an obligation — forcing him to make up for his own incompetence with gifts and gestures of affection.
