Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, the 1988 cult classic starring Cassandra Peterson as the iconic Elvira, has been unleashed in a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release from Arrow Video. Packed with a new trailer and bursting with special features, this release is a must-have for fans of horror and humour alike.

The film, directed by James Signorelli, sees Elvira trading her life as a Los Angeles TV horror hostess for the small town of Fallwell, Massachusetts, where she inherits her late great-aunt Morgana’s estate. However, the mansion, Morgana’s peculiar pet poodle, and an old cookbook hold more than sentimental value. Elvira unwittingly uncovers a family legacy of magic while grappling with the conservative townsfolk and her sinister uncle, Vincent, who harbours plans to use the spellbook for dark purposes. Back in September, it was announced that Arrow Video would be releasing a number of titles in 4K Blu-ray remasters. One of those titles was the cult hit from the 1988, Elvira: Mistress of the Dark. The new physical media release will hit retailers in a few days on November 12. Details of the special features and technical specs are now revealed, courtesy of Blu-ray.com.

The 1988 horror-comedy has been newly restored in 4K with Dolby Vision and uncompressed stereo 2.0 audio. The limited edition first pressing comes with reversible artwork, a slipcover, and a booklet written by Sam Irving, Kat Ellinger, and Patterson Lundquist.

It’s always fun to see some of our horror heroes appear outside of their given role as it were. We’ve seen Stephen King appear in tons of his story’s adaptations, but he also showed up in things not associated with him like Sons of Anarchy. Sure, you get athletes that try acting, some that are even successful, but how about our beloved horror hosts? Many of them only stayed on the critique end of the movie spectrum but a couple have made the jump. Joe Bob Briggs appeared in a segment of the recent Scare Package as well as a deleted scene from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 but never got the spotlight in his own feature length film.

It’s time for a new episode of our Revisited video series, and with this one we’re taking a moment to pay tribute to one of the most iconic horror hosts of all time, Elvira. We love Cassandra Peterson, a smart woman who made a go of horror host work in the tough Los Angeles TV market, long after the short-lived Vampira and just a few years after the passing of Sinister Seymour. After Elvira’s Movie Macabre she got to make this lively comedy feature, and thus planted her stake in the cinema firmament while at the top of her game. I’d give it an A+ for nostalgic sentiment, a B for quality and a B+ for wit, even if the adult humor does skew a bit infantile. Well, that was part of the Elvira personality too!

Well, we made it through another month everyone, but before we bid farewell to April, we’ve got one last batch of horror and sci-fi home media releases to look forward to this week. Arrow Video is keeping busy with their Special Edition Blus for both The Wind and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark and Scream Factory is showing The Last Continent some love, too. Agfa and Bleeding Skull have put together a must-own release of The McPherson Tape and if you’ve never had a chance to check out Gutterballs, the cult classic is headed to both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday courtesy of Unearthed Films.

Other releases for April 28th include Deadline (1980), The Backlot Murders, Olivia Aka Double Jeopardy/Prozzie, The Dark Red, Dreamkatcher, and Malabimba: Uncensored.

Previously released in the UK by Arrow Video and in the Us by Rlje Films, this version of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark is due out on April 28th.

Back in 1972, a year after their massive hit “Woodstock,” Warner Bros. exec Ted Ashley set out to produce another music documentary with the help of Pink Floyd producer Joe Boyd, director of music services at Warner Bros. So Boyd set out to find someone to shoot the Aretha Franklin concert movie in Watts, which required someone who understood how to shoot multiple cameras with sync sound.

Last year, German distributor Cinespectral Films announced their plans to honor the Queen of Halloween with a limited edition, all-region Blu-ray of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988), and today they've released the full details and pre-order information for the anticipated home media release.

Limited to 3,000 overall items, the Elvira, Mistress of the Dark Blu-ray / DVD is available in three different cover art versions (limited to 1,000 apiece) and is slated for an April 24th release. Cinespectral Films proudly presents the 1988 cult comedy: Elvira, Mistress of the Dark for the first time ever on Blu-ray, in glorious all-new restored High Definition.

Hop in the Macabre Mobile and keep a tight hold on the lid of your casserole dish, because Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (1988) is finally coming to Blu-ray this April.

Following its initial announcement last year, EW reports that German distributor Cinespectral Films will release Elvira, Mistress of the Dark on a three-disc Blu-ray set (confirmed by Cinespectral to be region free) on April 24th. Featuring a 4K scan of the movie's initial interpositive, this home media release is limited to 3,000 items and will include two Blu-ray discs and a Pal DVD.

Collectors can choose between three different cover art choices (including the new artwork below by Andreas Marschall), with each option limited to 1,000 items. EW reveals that the Blu-ray bonus features will include the following:

Perhaps the thing that David Lynch is best known for in the mainstream is the television series Twin Peaks which ran from summer 1990 until spring 1991. When it debuted the series was huge, I mean huge. It infected all areas of popular culture and was like the Lost of its day with people hotly debating Who Killed Laura Palmer? The same way they debated the significance of the numbers in Lost. Twin Peaks changed prime time television forever; it pushed the limits of what you could show in terms of sex and violence and also changed the way that stories are told in ongoing arcs and plotlines that would last for many episodes. Without its initial success it’s doubtful we would have later got The X-Files and shows like Buffy the vampire slayer and Angel which ran with the serial format rather than the more common story of the week.
