Castillo takes over the part of Michael Bartel as the architect husband of Winstead’s character, portrayed in the original film by Annabella Sciorra. Claire Bartel is happily married and pregnant for the second time when she becomes the target of a dark plot on the part of a nanny — originally portrayed by Rebecca De Mornay, and now by Monroe. Directed by Curtis Hanson, the original watches as Peyton infiltrates the lives of the Bartel family after experiencing personal and professional ruin, slowly gaining their trust while manipulating them from within. James Cameron showed up at D23 Brazil (by video) earlier today to confirm that Avatar: Fire & Ash, the third instalment in the hit franchise, is now officially in post-production.

Five gorgeous pieces of concept art have since been released (via SFFGazette.com), offering a better idea of what to expect from the new corners of Pandora we'll explore in this next chapter of the filmmaker's epic sci-fi saga.

Cameron mentioned that the Ash People are a reflection of the worst side of N'avi, suggesting he pulled inspiration from the reality when he noted, "We have a lot of anger and a lot of rage in the world we live in right now."

The threequel's other newly introduced N'avi tribe will be nomadic and travel through the air; however, the Ash People "were destroyed by volcanic eruptions, so they resent nature and everything the forest Na'vi preach."

The original film starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra and follows a woman, played by De Mornay, who after her sex-offender husband gets caught in the act and kills himself, embarks on a mission of vengeance against one of her husband’s victims and the woman’s family. Monroe will step into the role made famous by De Mornay, while Winstead will play the role originated by Sciorra.

The original screenplay was written by Amanda Silver and the film was executive produced by Rick Jaffa; the duo later became the writing team of Jaffa/Silver.

Monroe most recently starred in Oz Perkin’s Longlegs opposite Nicolas Cage, which made over $100 million at the box office, making it the most successful indie horror movie in the past ten years. She played the lead in Chloe Okuno’s Watcher, and broke out in David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows.

Her other film credits include Hot Summer Nights with Timothee Chalamet and Villains with Bill Skarsgaard.

Garza Cervera gained recognition for her debut feature Huesera, which has received acclaim since its premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, where it won Best New Narrative Director and the Nora Ephron Award. Huesera has since accumulated over 40 awards worldwide, including the Citizen Kane Award and the Blood Window Award at the Sitges Film Festival, and earned 17 nominations at the Mexican Academy’s Ariel Awards, winning Best First Feature, Original Screenplay, Makeup, and Special Effects. She was also selected for the 2023 Sundance Momentum Fellowship and was nominated for Breakthrough Director at the 2023 Gotham Independent Film Awards.

Exclusive: Deadline can reveal that Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron has purchased the rights to Charles Pellegrino’s forthcoming book Ghosts of Hiroshima.

Cameron has committed to use that, and the 2015 Pellegrino book Last Train From Hiroshima, as the basis for a film he will shoot as soon as Avatar production permits. Cameron shared with Deadline that the two nonfiction books will be adapted into one “uncompromising theatrical film.” It will mark Cameron’s first non-Avatar film since 1997’s Oscar-winning Titanic.

The film will be called Last Train From Hiroshima. Pellegrino’s Ghosts of Hiroshima will be published by Blackstone Publishing in August 2025. That marks the 80th anniversary of the dropping of the bomb in 1945.

The film focuses in part on the true story of a Japanese man during World War II who survived the atomic blast at Hiroshima, got on a train to Nagasaki, and then survived the nuclear explosion in that city.

The Austin Film Festival (Aff) is set to showcase a remarkable lineup of films at this year’s event, Variety is happy to exclusively announce the first selection of films, including the world premiere of “Ravens,” a magical realist biopic featuring recent Emmy-nominee Tadanobu Asano (“Shogun”).

Also among the highly anticipated premieres is the Texas-made thriller by Chris Beier and Daniel Wolfman centered around a washed-up Youtube star titled “The Ego Death of Queen Cecilia,” “Silent Notes,” a romantic neo-noir starring Daniel Durant (“Coda”) and the film adaptation of the Broadway play “The Piano Lesson” from Netflix starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, which just recently released a trailer. These films are part of Aff’s first wave of screenings, highlighting some of the year’s best in independent filmmaking.

Additional programming includes “Black Dog,” which received the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes this year as well as Ecuadorian horror film “Shaman.

There are few film franchises where a simple title reveal is enough to excite audiences. Avengers, Star Wars and James Bond among them. And then there’s Avatar, which stands as a class as its own.

While the franchise doesn’t have many films to its name, the first Avatar (2009) stands as the highest grossing film of all time, and sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) holds the record for the third highest grossing movie ever.

So when James Cameron announced that his third Avatar will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, it was enough to spark big applause at D23 Friday.

While Cameron didn’t preview any footage, he did showcase some concept art from the film, including Neytiri (Saldaña) riding a banshee, what appeared to be giant airships, and a first look at the fearsome Ash People of the Na’vi, covered in ghost-like soot and otherworldly masks as they dance around a giant fire pit.

The blockbuster franchises are showing signs of serious wear and tear, so why don’t the studios take on newer worlds created by the likes of Christopher Nolan and Alex Garland?

Some of the greatest genre movies of all time are sequels. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back; Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; The Godfather Part II; The Dark Knight; Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow. Ok, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea. There is absolutely no reason that lightning can’t strike twice, or even three, four, five, six times, if the will and creative verve are in place.

And yet there is also a law of diminishing returns. This week Planet of the Apes writer-producer team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver revealed that they are planning another five films in the dystopian sci-fi series, after the barnstorming box office and critical success...

The latest installment of the long-running Planet of the Apes franchise was released last Friday to an opening weekend of $131.2 million at the worldwide box office. The film is the first in a new trilogy following the Cesar trilogy from 2011 – 2017. This also marks the first film released under Disney due to the 2019 merger with 20th-century Fox.

The film leaves things open-ended for another sequel, this time following the character of Noa, which makes you think how much longer this rebooted franchise can last. Now, we have an idea as to how long the creative team wants it to go.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in theaters with an impressive box-office opening which all but guarantees we haven’t seen the last of those damn dirty apes. It remains to be seen how many more sequels we’ll get, but Planet of the Apes franchise producers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who also wrote Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, told THR that they originally envisioned a nine movie arc for the modern franchise.

20th Century Studios/Disney's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is off to a great start at the global box office after exceeding expectations with a $130M+ opening weekend.

Despite positive reviews, the latest Apes adventure received a disappointing "B" CinemaScore, which suggested that audiences may not be quite as taken with the movie as the majority of critics. Even so, Kingdom managed to take $58.5 million in North America and $72.7 million overseas for a worldwide start of $131.2 million.

This puts the film ahead of Sunday’s domestic estimates of $56.5 million to give it the third-best opening of the year to date, as well as the second-best launch of the franchise after Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes back in 2014.

The movie has a reported budget of $160 million.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” may not feature the words of screenwriting power couple Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, but their imprint is all over the reboot franchise and because of the producer credit they fought for when they wrote “Rise,” their names will be too. Having been an agent before he transitioned into screenwriting, Jaffa was well acquainted with the benefits of obtaining producer status and it has since allowed him and wife Amanda Silver to maintain ownership over a reboot franchise many consider to be better than its predecessor. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jaffa said his creative shift away from agency work wasn’t much of a surprise, but that Silver helped him along.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is now playing in theaters, which means key plot details have begun to find their way online.

In a new interview with THR, star Freya Allan (Mae) discusses the ending and how the original conclusion played out in far less subtle - and quite a bit darker - fashion.

During the climactic battle, Mae makes a fateful decision to blow open the floodgates and destroy the human tech the villainous Proximus was trying to get his hands on, killing hundreds of apes in the process.

Despite an overall positive reception from both critics and fans, 20th Century Studios' latest Apes movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has received one of the worst CinemaScores of the franchise.

The Wes Ball-directed sci-fi adventure is now certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 80% (the audience score is also 80%), but has still only managed to secure a disappointing "B" CinemaScore.

For those unfamiliar with this particular system, a B may not sound too bad, but it's rare enough for a major studio blockbuster to fall below an A-, and it also marks the worst CinemaScore of the franchise since Tim Burton's disastrous 2001 remake.

Ultimately, this shouldn't have too much of a negative impact on the film's box office. Cinemagoers do tend to pay some attention to these scores, but not nearly as much as a green splat on Rotten Tomatoes, for example.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are so in sync that they tend to finish each other’s sentences, a habit that has come in handy during decades spent together writing some of Hollywood’s biggest movies — all while maintaining a 35-year-long marriage.

The duo arrived on the scene with The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the 1992 female-led thriller that Silver wrote in USC grad school and got made with the help of Jaffa, then an agent at William Morris, who put it in front of the right people and worked as an uncredited writer on the film. The Planet Of The Apes franchise has seen five feature films from the original movies, one from Tim Burton in 2001, a successful prequel series starring the amazing Andy Serkis, a live-action television series, an animated Saturday morning series, comic books, trading cards, action figures, you name it.

50 years ago in 1974 20th Century Fox came up with the clever idea to offer all five movies at once to select movie theaters, and program them together as a “Go Ape!” movie marathon.

Inventive marketing at the time, the films starred the incomparable Roddy McDowall, who played Cornelius and Caesar, in 4 out of the 5 movies. All the movies can now be found on streaming services.

Now, the apes are finally back on the big screen in director Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes." Featuring a new cast in a new timeline years removed from the previous trilogy, this is a new start for the series. So, are moviegoers going to have to stick around during the credits to see what the future holds?

Credits scenes are a staple of franchise filmmaking in the modern era. Given that Disney is now in control of "Planet of the Apes," it doesn't feel out of character for there to be a tease of something else to come down the line. For those headed to a theater to see "Kingdom,...

For a writer, signing on to “Planet of the Apes” is less an assignment than a calling. After all, it’s the longest-running science-fiction series in film history. So when Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the husband-and-wife screenwriting and producing team, conceived “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in 2011, they envisioned more than a single-serving reboot. “We did see that if we played it right, there’d be at least three movies,” Jaffa tells Variety.

He wasn’t wrong: Their four-film stint culminates with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the franchise’s 10th installment (and the first in a reported new trilogy). Their tenure follows that of Paul Dehn, who took over screenwriting duties from Rod Serling and Pierre Boulle for the 1970s “Planet of the Apes” sequels. “Kingdom” also echoes the series’ labyrinthine internal timeline, which elapses across a millennia of circular (and occasionally contradictory) storytelling.

After 2017’s masterful War of the Planet of the Apes, which completed the trilogy that started with 2011’s Rise and 2014’s Dawn and told the epic story of wise leader Caesar and the apes who created this whole new world, I really thought there was nowhere else to go with this franchise that had itself started so brilliantly in 1968 with the original starring Charlton Heston as an astronaut who lands in this futuristic world dominated by intelligent apes. Many other iterations would come, even a side foray by Tim Burton, but it was that most recent trilogy that really popped. But being box office successes, 20th Century’s new owner Disney knew there was more to be mined, and they were right.

The latest instalment in the relaunched Planet of the Apes franchise, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, arrives in theatres exactly ten days from now, and 20th Century Studios has released quite a bit of new promotional material, including an action-packed final trailer spotlighting plenty of new footage.

The teaser tells us a little more about new lead ape, Noa, and reveals why he has a vendetta against the tyrannical Proximo Caesar. We also hear Mae speak, and it seems the human girl is fully aware that the world once belonged to her people before the ape uprising.

Does this mean Kotpota will bring events full circle? It's possible, but we might see at least one more movie before things begin to link up to the original Planet of the Apes.

On Monday April 22, 20th Century Studios’ all-new action-adventure spectacle, Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, made a trip to Venice Beach to get some sun, catch some waves and promote the film to onlookers lucky enough to be there. The apes on horseback was a clever idea and looked very reminiscent of the original 1968 film Planet Of The Apes.

The USC School of Cinematic Arts has announced that Miky Lee will deliver the 20024 Commencement address.

James Gray, director, writer, and Sca alumnus, will receive the Mary Pickford Alumni Award at the graduation ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium on Friday, May 10, 2024.

“Miky Lee is a true pioneer and ambassador of collaborative global filmmaking, and we are so happy to have her share her insight and expertise with our graduating students,” Elizabeth M. Daley, Dean of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, said in a statement. “Miky works across borders, cultures, and genres, and champions the kinds of projects our students aspire to creating. We are so pleased she agreed to be this year’s graduation speaker.”
