Born and raised in Hemel Hempstead, Herfordshire, England.

Mother to William John (b. November 1999) and Henry Thomas (b. May 2002); both sons were delivered via Caesarean section.

Trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

Former daughter-in-law of Geoffrey Palmer.

She was awarded the 1995 London Critics Circle Theatre Award (Drama Theatre) for Best Actress for her performance in The Glass Menagerie.

Although many sources list her birth year as 1965, Claire is thought to have in fact been born in October of 1964 (there exists as birth registration for a Claire L. Skinner in Hemel Hempstead during the last quarter of 1964, whereas there doesn't for 1965). Claire has yet to publicly confirm her exact date of birth.
