While classic Western movies may no longer be as popular as they were during their peak throughout the 1940s to the 1960s, it's incredible how the genre's style has been infused into countless non-Western movies. As classic tales of heroes and outlaws pervade cinema, it’s fascinating to note just how many things would not exist without the influence of classic Westerns. While some movies wear this influence on their sleeves, it’s a much more subtle comparison in other films.
It’s no surprise that Westerns have had a major impact on other genres, as some of the best filmmakers of all time grew up watching cowboys and bandits and have taken those tropes and cliches into their own work. From cult classics that cannot fit into any one genre to major franchises that echo the aesthetics of Westerns, the desert landscape of the Wild West and the individualistic...

Long before Denzel Washington played the quietly lethal Robert McCall in the "Equalizer" movies, Edward Woodward portrayed the character on the original CBS TV series. "The Equalizer" aired on the network from 1985 to 1989 and starred Woodward as the retired intelligence agent who uses his skills to help bring justice to those who have been wronged in their day to day lives.
It's a remarkably durable formula that has not only birthed three Denzel-led movies (with fourth and fifth "Equalizer" movies already confirmed), but also a reboot series that stars Queen Latifah and which has run for five full seasons already. Each iteration of this franchise has brought something new to the table, but none of them could have existed without the original series from co-creators Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim.

While I appreciate all kinds of horror, I do have a special fondness for movies about telephones. Particularly from a pre-cellphone era. That sense of aural menace is more tangible with a landline connection. However, my expectation for 1987’s The Caller, one solely based on the title alone, was not met upon first viewing; there are no menacing phone calls here. In fact, the titular use of “caller” in director Arthur Allan Seidelman and writer Michael Sloan’s movie is referring to a visitor. My disappointment was fleeting, though, because this story still offers plenty of mind games. The psychological terror is now done at an arm’s length, and with it comes a bizarre ending that seals this movie’s status as a hidden gem.
What stands out about The Caller is its small cast. The dialogue and scenery would suggest a larger group of characters is in store,...

When The Equalizer 3 was released last year, it was promoted as being the final chapter in the film franchise – even though director Antoine Fuqua let it be known that he was interested in going back and telling the origin story of Robert McCall, the ex-Marine and Dia officer played by Denzel Washington in the trilogy. There’s no word on whether or not one them will actually end up being an origin story, but Washington has now revealed that he has agreed to come back for both The Equalizer 4 and The Equalizer 5!
Washington dropped the news during an interview with Esquire, saying, “I told them I would do another Equalizer, and we’re doing four and five. More people are happy about that – people love those daggone Equalizers. But I’ve come to realize that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they’re for the people. They...

The Equalizer TV spinoff has a higher Rotten Tomatoes score than Denzel Washington's movie series. Queen Latifah's Robyn McCall offers a fresh and lighter take on the franchise's premise. The TV show and movies are not connected, with different tones and universes.
As surprising as it may sound, The Equalizers TV show spinoff outdid Denzel Washingtons movie series in one notable way. The Equalizer franchise dates back to the 80s when co-creator Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheims original spy TV series first premiered. The Equalizer ran from 1985 and 1989, becoming a popular cult classic in the years after its cancelation. The Equalizer focused on Edward Woodwards title character, a former spy whose dark past and lethal skills allowed him to act as a hero for hire. The Equalizer was rebooted as a Denzel Washington movie in 2014.
Antoine Fuquas The Equalizer was a huge hit that soon spawned a sequel.

Jason Statham's Levon's Trade could be the start of a new action franchise. The gritty vigilante story in Levon's Trade mirrors themes from Denzel Washington's Equalizer franchise. Returning for the third installment in the gritty action saga, The Equalizer 3 aims to deepen the mysterious world of Robert McCall. With Denzel Washington’s undeniable charm at its helm and Antione Fuqua’s seasoned direction, the film promises a continuation of its intense street-justice narrative. Yet, does it deliver the high-octane thrills we’ve come to expect, or does it falter under the weight of its own legacy? In addition to Washington, the film also stars Dakota Fanning, Eugenio Mastrandrea, Andrea Scarduzio, and Remo Girone. Richard Wenk returns as screenwriter.
The film starts with one of the bloodiest intro scenes, beginning with Robert McCall (Washington) captured by thugs. They don’t stand a chance, though, as McCall delivers his famed countdown smackdown, and just like that, the bad guys are rendered useless. After the encounter, he ends up in the small Italian town of Altomonte to recover. He stays with the local doctor,...

Low end forecasts have Sony’s Denzel Washington starring, Antoine Fuqua-directed action threequel, The Equalizer 3 at $30M+ over 4-days.
Some box office sources even think the sequel, which was shot in Italy, has a shot at $40M and that’s because of The Equalizer 3‘s big first choice numbers with guys over 25. Even Women over 25 is solid. The one pause is that the nine-year-old franchise’s audience is getting older, and that demo as we all know has a gradual pace to cinemas.
There are no other wide releases over Labor Day weekend, and National Cinema Day isn’t occurring over that four day holiday weekend like last year. Sony has Gran Turismo officially opening wide on Aug. 25, despite the fact that it’s been holding previews since last week.
The Equalizer at the end of September 2014 opened to $34.1M and finaled at $101.5M domestic. The Equalizer 2...

Anderson got the role of Mary Ingalls when she was just 11 years old. But before that, she was no stranger to acting. She’d been in various commercials and had scored roles in shows like Bewitched and The Brady Bunch.
In Little House on the Prairie, she played the character of Mary, Laura’s older sister. In the books, Mary didn’t have much of a presence. But the TV show gave the character of Mary some more meat, which Anderson is thankful for.

Sony film boss Tom Rothman took a moment during his studio’s CinemaCon presentation Monday night to nod to a new Nrg study that investigates the most popular movie stars in Hollywood.
Rothman explained that if the pundits are to believed, “movie stars don’t matter anymore,” adding that he really hopes “all my competitors believe that shit” because he most emphatically disagrees. “True movie stars matter more than ever,” Rothman said. “They are just rarer than ever. Streaming doesn’t create movie stars, only global hits do.”

There have been reports over the last 24 hours of a drugs raid implicating production staff involved in the Italian shoot of The Equalizer 3 on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
Deadline is hearing from close sources, however, that the arrested parties worked for a catering company which was an independent contractor and would likely be replaced.
They add that the men were arrested after a private gathering on a day off for the country’s November 1 All Saints’ public holiday and were not on set when their alleged crimes took place.
According to reports in the Italian press, Italian paramilitary police raided the accommodation where the men were staying Tuesday and seized 120 grams of cocaine.
Local carabinieri captain Umberto D’Angelantonio said two Roman caterers had been arrested and charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of dealing and were now being held under house arrest at their hotel in the coastal town of Maiori.

Italian paramilitary police raided hotel rooms used by employees of a catering company on “The Equalizer 3” on the Amalfi coast and arrested two caterers after seizing more than 100 grams of cocaine on Tuesday, according to local media.
Italian newspaper Il Giornale reported that Carabinieri cops broke into hotel rooms in the seaside resort of Maiori used by the “Equalizer 3” caterers after the head of the film’s catering service suddenly died of a heart attack on Monday evening. CBS has renewed “The Equalizer,” starring Queen Latifah, for a second season.
The hour-long drama premiered last month in the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot. Airing immediately after the game, the debut averaged 23.8 million total viewers. That was down from what Fox drew to the Season 3 premiere of “The Masked Singer” on the post-game slot a year earlier, but that Super Bowl was much more highly rated than the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ blowout victory this year over the Kansas City Chiefs. “The Equalizer” premiere also drew a 5.1 rating in the 18-49 demo. It was the highest-rated entertainment program since 2020’s Academy Awards telecast. The premiere retained 40% of the Super Bowl audience, the highest post-game retention rate for any Super Bowl lead-out since Fox’s “New Girl” in 2014.
“’The Equalizer’ has proven more than equal to the task of engaging viewers and racking up wins on Sunday night,” said Kelly Kahl,...

Queen Latifah is using everything in her arsenal to bring the titular Robyn McCall to life on CBS’ The Equalizer (Sundays, 8/7c).
The former rapper and singer relies on her musicality when it comes to fight sequences, and her sense of justice as someone who was bullied as a kid growing up in Newark, New Jersey. But when it comes to being the first Black woman to take the lead in the franchise’s history, on either the big or small screen, Latifah (née Dana Owens) is tapping into her genetic memory.

After last week’s offbeat slate of home media releases, things are back on track this Tuesday, with a wildly eclectic assortment of titles headed home just in time for the Halloween season. If somehow you haven’t been adding any of the Blumhouse movies to your home collections over the years, you can now play catch-up rather easily with their Blumhouse of Horrors: 10-Movie Collection. Vinegar Syndrome is once again doing the dark lord’s work with their releases of Pandemonium and The Caller, and Severin Films is showing some love to both Cruel Jaws and Massacre in Dinosaur Valley, too.
Scream Factory has put together a brand new collector’s edition Blu-ray for Ghost Ship that arrives this week, and if you’re someone who digs on “banana pants” cinematic experiences, you’ll definitely want to pick up Agfa’s Blu-ray for Sometimes Aunt Martha Does Dreadful Things.

CBS has made three series pick ups for the 2020-2021 season.
On the drama side, CBS has ordered the “Equalizer” reboot starring Queen Latifah and “Clarice,” which follows Clarice Starling in the aftermath of “The Silence of the Lambs.” On the comedy side, the network has picked up the multi-cam “B Positive,” which hails from Chuck Lorre.
The shows mark the first shows that were going through the normal pilot season process to get picked up for next season. Nearly all pilots were unable to complete filming before the Covid-19 pandemic forced a suspension of prodution. “B Positive” was one of the only pilots to complete filming before that happened. CBS had originally ordered 14 pilots this season, with both drama “The Lincoln Lawyer” and comedy “Fun” having been passed over in the past week.
CBS renewed the vast majority of its scripted lineup earlier this week, with 23 current shows now set to return next season.

In the new trailer for The Equalizer 2, Denzel Washington reprises his role as Robert McCall, but it seems as though he has settled down with his life and is happy with being a mild-mannered Lyft driver who minds his business and does his job…that is, until someone does him wrong — like in the trailer above.
As his first sequel of Washington’s career, it looks like he goes big in the frenetic and action-packed trailer. In addition to laying waste to a bunch of creeps who have done a woman wrong, he is out to avenge the death of his former colleague and friend Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo).
In the trailer, Washington did not come to play as he says in a voiceover, “I punish the guilty…if you’re lucky..they give you the opportunity to do the right thing…this ain’t one of those times.

“They killed my friend,” says Denzel Washington as the seeker of justice (or something like it) in this new trailer for Sony’s The Equalizer 2. “So I’m going to kill each and every one of them, and my only disappointment is I only get to do it once.”
In the first sequel of Washington’s career, he returns to the role of Robert McCall, described by Sony as a man who “serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed – but how far will he go when that is someone he loves?”
The upcoming film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, is written by Richard Wenk, based on the old television series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim.
The trailer also includes a telling exchange between McCall and his old cohort played by Melissa Leo. “I thought you were retired,” he says, to which she resonds, “Oh, I am,...

The New York Times and the New Yorker shared the Pulitzer Prize for public service on Monday for their bombshell reporting about movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and multiple accusations of sexual misconduct over the course of several decades.
Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey’s October Times story, followed days later by Ronan Farrow’s New Yorker report detailing more accusations of harassment and even assault, had an almost immediate impact on both Weinstein’s studio and Hollywood more generally.
Within a month, more than 80 women stepped forward with accusations of misconduct against the Oscar-winning mogul — who was quickly fired by The Weinstein Company, the film and TV company he founded with his brother, Bob, and expelled from the Motion Picture Academy. Last month, The Weinstein Company filed for bankruptcy in the aftermath of the scandal.
