Christmas movies are a dime a dozen — especially when the Holiday season is just around the corner. The priorities of these movies are pretty straightforward. They are either about the togetherness that the season brings for families – a good narrative would use this aspect to either bring estranged ones together or dysfunctional ones closer. Subsequently, there are those movies that take the holiday spirit head-on, and push the viewers, and humans in general, to be at least a little bit kinder to each other. Because Bruce Willis has been so closely identified with the action film genre over the past thirty-five years, beginning with his performance as John McClane in the first Die Hard film, it’s easy to forget that Willis first established himself in Hollywood as a light comedic actor on television.
Indeed, most people who are under the age of forty have either forgotten or are unaware that Willis first gained Hollywood stardom in the role of quirky, wisecracking private detective David Addison on the groundbreaking comedy-drama television series Moonlighting, which aired on ABC between 1985 and 1989 and brought Willis a Primetime Emmy Award in 1987, just as his film career was starting to take off.
The release of Die Hard in 1988 not only launched Willis’s film career but also overshadowed Willis’s comedic television persona, as Willis’s then-stunning transformation into an action film icon also heralded the cancelation of Moonlighting.
