- In 2007, after 25 years, he returned to his hit musical "The Pirates of Penzance", this time playing the Pirate King, and earned a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle nomination.
- Smith was the first actor to play Marvel Comics' character Matt Murdock/Daredevil (in The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989)).
- Replaced Andy Gibb, in 1981, as co-host of the music variety show, Solid Gold (1980), when Gibb was fired for drug problems that resulted in his unreliability. Gibb died in 1988 of heart problems aggravated by his cocaine usage.
- Smith has a son by an affair with Karen Lakey in 1979. He was unaware he had fathered a child by the relationship until Brandon Smith attended a performance of the musical "Sunset Blvd" in Vancouver and approached him after the show. Karen Lakey told her son the truth shortly before her death from cancer.
- The youngest of four brothers, all of whom have careers in the music industry. Paul Evan (Evan) is a road manager; Michael was the lead singer in the band, Starz; and Webster Smith is a pianist.
