Elliot Silverstein, who helmed episodes of such acclaimed TV shows as Naked City, The Twilight Zone and Route 66 before guiding Lee Marvin to a best actor Oscar in Cat Ballou, his feature directorial debut, died Friday in Los Angeles, his family announced. He was 96.

The Boston native also helmed A Man Called Horse (1970), which starred Richard Harris in the title role as an English aristocrat who eventually becomes the leader of the Native tribe that had captured and tortured him. The action movie spawned a couple of sequels.

Most importantly, Silverman was instrumental in the formation of the milestone Bill of Creative Rights for directors.

“Every director today owes a debt of gratitude to Elliot Silverstein,” DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter said in a statement. “No one ever worked harder or was more passionate about protecting artists from having their work and vision altered than Elliot.”

Television was the medium that conferred stardom on the actor Jack Klugman, who has died aged 90. In a long, distinguished career that also embraced theatre and film, he was principally identified with two television characters: Oscar Madison, the slovenly, down-to-earth, cigar-smoking flatmate of the neurotically neat Felix Unger (Tony Randall) in the long-running comedy series The Odd Couple (1970-75; in the play and film, Felix's surname was spelt Ungar), and Quincy in Quincy, Me (1976-83), a crime-solving medical examiner.

Born in a poor neighbourhood of Philadelphia, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, Klugman had a tough childhood. His father, a house painter, died young, forcing his mother to make hats in her kitchen to buy food and clothing for her six children. Young Jack, who worked as a street peddler, later observed: "Poverty can teach lessons that privilege cannot.

After running away from a poverty-ridden childhood to join the Merchant Marines at the age of 14, Dawson pursued boxing and entertaining once he was discharged. He first went on stage as comedian Dickie Dawson, but revised the name to Richard Dawson once he became established.

Move over Gene Rayburn, Charles Nelson Reilly and Brett Somers -- a new Match Game is coming to town! An updated version of the classic fill-in-the-blank game show is being prepared for the TBS network.

Match Game debuted back in 1962 and ran for seven years with genial Rayburn as host. A slightly different version of the game show started in 1973 with Rayburn returning as host. The revival wasn't very popular with viewers until the usually dull questions were replaced with those that suggested double-entendre humor.

While some star panelists changed week to week, regulars included outrageous Nelson Reilly, caustic Somers, and debonair Richard Dawson (Hogan's Heroes). Recurring panelists included Orson Bean (Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman), Fannie Flagg, Vicki Lawrence (The Carol Burnett Show), Nipsey Russell, McLean Stevenson (M*A*S*H), and Betty White (The Mary Tyler Moore Show). This popular version ran until 1979 and is currently a mainstay of the Gsn schedule in reruns.

The comedians have signed on to be on the panel for TBS' updated "Match Game" pilot, shot this week in Los Angeles. Also taking seats are Super Dave Osborne (Bob Einstein), Kids in the Hall trouper Scott Thompson, Rashida Jones ("The Office") and Niecy Nash ("Reno 911!").

Andrew Daly ("Semi-Pro") is serving as host for the pilot, which is being executive produced by Robert Smigel of "Saturday Night Live" and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog fame.

The project, from FremantleMedia North America, was announced in March as part of the network's development slate, with TBS saying that it marks the network's biggest foray into game shows.

The original, which debuted in 1962, has had several incarnations in daytime and in the evening as a weekly syndicated show. "Match Game", featuring contestants trying to match missing words in a given phrase with a panel of celebrity guests, reached its naughty heyday with the Gene Rayburn-hosted version in the 1970s -- once the questions were tweaked to allow for a generous amount of double-entendre humor.
