Six Feet Under probably doesn’t come to most people’s minds when discussing HBO’s best series because it doesn’t have a controversial, overarching subject matter.
The Sopranos remains appealing to new viewers mainly due to its mafia backdrop. The Wire catches eyes because cop dramas are a known quantity. With Six Feet Under, however, creator Alan Ball (who also helmed HBO’s queer-coded horror spectacle True Blood) crafted a simple drama about a loving yet chaotic family who runs a funeral home. That doesn’t seem all that exciting to an audience member going in with no prior knowledge. Still, all it should take is a few episodes of the show for that viewer to become instantly obsessed with the raw, authentic characters and real life issues that it expertly depicts.
From death anxiety to coping with chronic illness, the series forces the people on screen and...

This article contains spoilers for the Six Feet Under series finale.
Every episode of Six Feet Under begins with an ending.
While not as well-regarded as its early 2000s HBO drama brethren The Sopranos and The Wire, Six Feet Under is still an important part of HBO, and therefore television, history. It’s also very good, as Netflix subscribers can now find out thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery’s content-sharing initiative with the streamer. (Previous HBO titles moving to Netflix include Band of Brothers and Ballers).
Created by Alan Ball (True Blood), Six Feet Under premiered on June 3, 2001 and followed the Fisher family as they tried to keep the family business of Fisher & Sons Funeral Home together after the death of paterfamilias Nate Sr. (Richard Jenkins). Naturally for a show set in a funeral home, the opening minutes of each Six Feet Under installment features a death that will produce...

Another legacy series could be returning to HBO.
Variety is reporting that a follow-up to Six Feet Under is in development.
The outlet stresses that the potential project is in "very early development."
Projects in development are not guaranteed to get a pilot, never mind a series order, so there's no telling how this might shake out.
Also, no plot details have been revealed, and it is not currently known if it will include any of the original stars.
The TV industry is obsessed with bringing projects from the past back as reboots, revivals, or a mixture of the two.
Some are successful, but the vast majority fail to garner much traction.
Six Feet Under came from Alan Ball, and the cast included Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Mathew St. Patrick, and Rachel Griffiths.

A follow-up series to Alan Ball’s Six Feet Under is being explored by HBO, Deadline has learned.
The project is in its very early stages; I hear the premium network has commissioned a script, with no firm concept and no writer attached yet. Series creator/executive producer Ball and executive producers Bob Greenblatt and David Janollari are on board to executive produce the project, which was first reported by Deadline’s sister pub Variety.
Created and produced by Ball, Six Feet Under aired for five seasons on HBO from 2001-2005. It centered around the lives of the Fisher family, who run a funeral home in Los Angeles, along with their friends and lovers.
Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Mathew St. Patrick, and Rachel Griffiths starred in the ensemble drama. It was produced by Actual Size Films and The Greenblatt/Janollari Studio.

A follow-up to “Six Feet Under” is in very early development at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
At this time, no writer is attached to the project. Likewise, no plotline has been decided, meaning it could be a reboot or more of a sequel series following up on existing characters from the show in the present day, but no decision has been made. Original series creator Alan Ball and executive producers Bob Greenblatt and David Janollari are all attached to executive produce the new project.
Reps for HBO declined to comment. Reps for Ball did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

It's easy to imagine that, 15 years from now, television audiences will take for granted the existence of groundbreaking series like Orange Is the New Black and Transparent. But it's impossible to look at the currently lush television landscape without acknowledging the debt that most popular shows owe to HBO at the turn of the new millennium.

Going into the Nov. 11 episode of Sons of Anarchy, 49 percent of readers thought Tyler (Mo McRae) had already turned on Samcro, per an EW.com poll. But spoiler alert: They were wrong. Moses demanded Tyler help him find out where the club was hiding the dead preacher's wife and stepson, so Tyler led him to To (and Rat). It was, however, all part of Jax's latest plan, which ended with To sending Moses and his men into a Samcro-led ambush. Fittingly, since Tyler's been a double agent in Sons' final season, McRae is now in Detroit shooting an indie film...

Spoiler alert: The Nov. 11 episode of Sons of Anarchy found Jax taking the expression "an eye for an eye" literally: After ambushing Moses (Mathew St. Patrick) and his men, he ripped out Moses' eyeball, which dangled out of its socket. (Chibs then cut off Moses' fingers before Jax put a bullet in his head, mirroring the fate Bobby had suffered.) The eye was stomach-turning and awesome, which is why we asked Sons' head of makeup Tracey Anderson how she did it. First, she got a stock hanging eyeball and eye socket from W.M. Creations, Oscar and Emmy winner Matthew W. Mungle's company.

Sons of Anarchy fans are still reeling from the Nov. 4 episode, which said goodbye to Bobby (Mark Boone Junior). Bobby's fate—a bullet to the head from the gun Marks had hidden on him before the no-weapons-allowed exchange—will have surprised the fans who voted Samcro's de facto conscience the club member most likely to survive in a pre-season EW.com poll. A warning for all you lesbians: this episode included too little of Tyra, and she appeared just as sassy-and-great-friend-to-Emily instead of looking-for-some-ass lesbian Tyra, and there was also no Hot Molly, or anything else overtly gay. But wait, before you go! Another truth: I still really, really loved this episode. I love each episode of this show more and more, which results in me feeling angrier and angrier about the network’s decision.
And even though there weren’t overtly gay things, there was further character development of Bandari (rejoice!), and a wonderful, complex storyline around fandom. Count me all the way in.
We begin with Emily lamenting that her life has become stuck in a dull rut, all too akin (again) to her high school days: she has the crush, the nemesis, the mean teacher. Except in high school she probably wasn...

Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC
Robert Greenblatt, NBC’ s new chairman and president of programming, might not think there is anything remarkable about his ascendancy to the top of the Peacock network, but then again he’s pretty modest about all of his achievements. However, given that Greenblatt is the first out gay man to head a broadcast network, AfterElton.com is inclined to disagree with him rather emphatically. In fact, we're more than happy to say we think his new position is an important step for Glbt visibility.
Greenblatt’s latest promotion is just another in a long list of achievements including, after this Saturday, the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) will bestow on Greenblatt for his contributions toward eliminating homophobia. (The award is named after the successful Los Angeles casting director who worked to fight AIDS-phobia and homophobia in Hollywood.)

Lets face it, as television viewers we grow attached to the gay characters that resonate with us on the small screen, and with the actors that bring life to these roles. We also find ourselves growing fond of out-and-proud actors that have opted to play it straight thats why its called acting, people and vice versa.
So when their shows are cancelled or taken off the air before they wear out their welcome (whatever, I still miss Sex and the City on Sunday nights, ok?), it can be a little bit difficult to see them slide into other TV roles easier than Lindsay Lohan checking into another rehab (Im rootin for you, girl).
Alas, sometimes that isnt always the case, which might have you asking yourself, Where are they now? In some cases for these actors, it could be taken as a query of, Where did they disappear to?
But for curiosity's (and manner's) sake,...

Update: 07:00 Brackets are back up and have been updated with yesterdays results.

Day 7: And so we begin the polls for the final section of the first round, and boy have we had some shockers so far. Yesterday's poll 'The West Wing vs. Lost' broke the record for the number of votes, and totally eclipsed all the other three polls. The West Wing may have lost and be out, but it scored more than the total of each of the other polls. For a while, it had a 14% lead and over 200 votes, but as America woke up, the lead disintegrated. It's a shame for such a good show, I have seen the first season and thoroughly enjoyed it, and I wish it could have got further but like 'The Sopranos' and 'Friends' amongst others, we say goodbye for now. Through is therefore 'Lost' with a huge 2000+ votes,...

We asked you which gay or bisexual TV characters you think are the best, and you told us – with tens of thousands of votes cast.
Now we have the results.
But first, a few interesting statistics.
We have quite a few familiar faces – characters who made our last poll of the best gay and bisexual characters two and a half years ago – and a few missing ones, namely Vince D’Angelo (from Will & Grace), George Huang (from Law & Order: Svu), and Waylon Smithers (from The Simpsons), all of whom didn’t even make the top 50 this time around.
Meanwhile, we also have many new faces – from shows that have debuted since our last poll.
Every single character except two comes from a show that ran in the 00s (although some shows, like Will & Grace, did debut in the late 90s). The exceptions? Jodie Dallas, played by Billy Crystal, on Soap...

There will be sort of a crossover between "NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service" and its spin-off "NCIS: Los Angeles" when both take over the Tuesdays night this Fall. Pauley Perrette, who portrays the goth agent Abby Sciuto, will guest star in the second episode of "Los Angeles".
Executive producer Shane Brennan announced Friday, July 31 during TV Critics Association tour that Abby will have a "fun little cameo" in the new series, helping the unit in solving a case. Previously, Agents G. Callen (Chris O'Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) have made appearances on the original "NCIS" for two episodes, as means of introduction.
Additionally, Brennan also revealed a new "Los Angeles" character which they had kept hidden. Matthew St. Patrick, known as Keith in "Six Feet Under", will be a "former special ops guy who actually gets deeply involved in the case and may or may not be a bad guy.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Groeten (i.e. “Greetings!”): Ever since I started to watch The Oc, I was instantly smitten by the hotness that is Benjamin McKenzie. Chicago – Oscar madness has left the Round Up a little weary of high profile, award-bait movies. We need a break from the Oscars and what better way to do that than with a few titles that might have slipped through the cracks while everyone was singing “Jai Ho”.
Catch up with some of your favorite characters from the cult hit “Dead Like Me,” watch the latest in Warner Brothers’ direct-to-dvd horror series known as “Raw Feed,” and check out a documentary that I think everyone thought would make bigger waves than it did, Bill Maher’s “Religulous”.
All three of these titles were released on February 17th, 2009.

There’s something about grocery stores. They have a sort of charm that’s currently going three for three, as far as recent horror/sci-fi entries with that setting go. Both The Mist and last year’s Splinter were excellent examples of the “trapped in a market” theme, and now comes Warner’s Raw Feed DVD release Alien Raiders (out February 17)—which, while not overly original, is nonetheless pretty awesome.
The film opens with some shaky handheld insight into our protagonists, getting ready for their next mission. Intercut between video clips and the main titles are shots of hands preparing some seriously heavy firepower. This is a risky move; it basically promises, “This flick is going to have bad-ass written all over it.” And it works. The characters we’re following are a team of operatives/mercenaries/soldiers of some sort with rad names like Ritter (Carlos Bernard), Sterling (Courtney Ford...

Ben Rock's sci-fi thriller Alien Raiders, which rocked Fantastic Fest 2008 is now (or very soon) on DVD. If you saw it, you probably want to pick it up to show your friends if you didn't you owe it to yourself to check out a movie that Fantastic Fest guests called "a great thriller disguised as a B-movie" with "lots of laughs, some good scares and just a fun ride all around."
About Alien Raiders:
It's the end of yet another night at Hastings Supermarket, an idyllic family grocery store in Buck Lake, Arizona. But the normal closing-time monotony is broken when a group of masked and armed-to-the-teeth militants invade the store, immediately killing several of the employees and shoppers and holding the rest hostage. Though the hostage-takers at first appear to be robbers or terrorists, they reveal themselves to be a cadre of rogue scientists that have discovered...

Television matters. Who and what we see on our screens each week tells us a great deal about who and what is relevant in society, who has power, and who doesn’t. That’s why AfterElton.com pays such close attention to the shows that have gay characters and gay storylines, analyzing what each new character and plot twist says about the acceptance of gay and bisexual men in today’s world.
Television programming as we know it today came into existence approximately seventy years ago. However, it took thirty-five years for the first semi-regularly recurring gay character to appear, on The Corner Bar, an 1972 ABC show that lasted for fifteen episodes and featured Vincent Schiavelli as Peter Panama. Over the next several years, gay characters popped up on other short-lived shows including Hot L Baltimore and The Nancy Walker Show, but it wasn’t until 1977 and Soap that gay...

Jessalyn Gilsig has joined NBC's one-hour pilot Backyards and Bullets as a regular, and John Cho has been tapped for a multiepisode arc on Fox's comedy series 'Til Death.
Bullets, from Sony Pictures TV and Pariah, revolves around a suburban Neighborhood Watch group gone awry. Gilsig will play the wife of the character played by Mathew St. Patrick.
