For the majority of the film industry’s existence, movie ratings were more of a vague suggestion rather than a strict guideline. Before films like Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom and Gremlins sparked a parental guidance revolution in the mid 80s, the difference between G and PG could often be something as extreme as gory decapitations or even explicit sex scenes.
And while it’s commonly accepted that the advent of the PG-13 rating resulted in studios attempting to pander to the lowest common denominator (with producers insisting that their box office revenue not be handicapped by an R rating while also not wanting to be associated with “kid” movies), I’d argue that limitations aren’t always a bad thing.
And with Blumhouse’s upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation reminding audiences that you don’t really need traditional blood and guts to be scary, we...

The Roman Catholic Church combats a global rise in demonic possessions by reopening schools to train priests to perform exorcisms. Although nuns are forbidden to perform this ritual, a professor recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline, she soon finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl who’s possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years earlier.

Happy Halloween, fellow box office aficionados. Famously, Halloween weekend has not been a huge one for the movie business, but a horror movie or two can slip in and make some solid dough. This past weekend, Lionsgate tried to slip the exorcism flick "Prey for the Devil" through the cracks as the spooky season offering. It didn't exactly pan out, as Warner Bros.' superhero movie "Black Adam" easily topped the charts again in its second weekend. Though, even that movie's earnings up to this point leaves room for discussion. Let's dig into the numbers, shall we?
"Black Adam" reigned supreme in the #1 spot for the second week in a row domestically, taking in 27.7 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That represents a pretty steep 58.7 drop from week-to-week, which is a whole lot more than Warner Bros. would have liked for the long-awaited Dwayne Johnson DC Comics adaptation. It was rather expensive,...

After a 114 million overall box office last weekend, the first since July to hit the nine digits, the numbers plunged back down again to a weak 65.8 million pre-Halloween weekend. The weekends leading up to or including October 31st are often among the year’s lowest grossing, so this isn’t such a buzzkill, but it’s still far below the pre-pandemic norms, with no late October weekend grossing this little since the 1990s. Next weekend looks to be even worse, and though Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will bring the numbers back up the following weekend and possibly give us just the year’s fourth 200+ million total weekend box office, the current state of the yo-yoing box office is still far from ideal.
Last week’s champ Black Adam reigned once again this weekend, grossing 27.7 million and making up 42 of the total box office. The ten day cume comes to 111 million,...

New Line/DC’s Black Adam ends its first week with 83.4M, which is slightly ahead of what Dwayne Johnson’s Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw did in its first week at 83.1M. That’s impressive considering that this is a deeper universe DC character, and the other was connected to a long-established franchise, not to mention it debuted in the summer. Hobbs & Shaw ended its domestic run at 173.9M. The pic’s second weekend was 36.5M, and currently Black Adam is expected to come in lighter at 27M-30M in weekend two. The anti-hero’s Thursday gross was 3.1M, -8 from Wednesday.

Plot: Demonic possessions are rising, so the Catholic Church has put exorcist training courses on the fast track. But Sister Ann, a nun with a personal history of it, is forbidden to train until that personal history comes back in a dangerous way.
Review:The exorcist sub-genre has always lived in the immense shadow of 1973’s The Exorcist. Like Jaws for shark movies, exorcism is culturally linked to one main entry and has set the bar high on quality and execution. It’s hard not to compare Prey for the Devil to Friedkin’s classic in some way. And though director Daniel Stamm plays within a well-worn toy chest, he still delivers a fun popcorn experience. It may lean more toward the pop aesthetic James Wan ushered in, in terms of jump scares than deep terror, but it’s still a fun time if you go in knowing it’s that type of flick.

Twelve years ago director Daniel Stamm was considered in some quarters as having revivified a subgenre with “The Last Exorcism.” That sleeper hit that was no classic, but it took itself seriously in the right ways, as put across by a good cast including the estimable (and still underused) Ashley Bell. Since 2014’s less successful “13 Sins,” he’s been occupied with episodic TV work. Unsurprisingly, his first feature in eight years marks a return to the general terrain that worked for him before.
“Prey for the Devil” won’t likely spur enthusiasm equal to Stamm’s breakout film, despite the relative novelty value of being built around a female exorcist — something not so unprecedented (at least onscreen) as billed, last year’s Veracruz-set “The Old Ways” being just one other example. Still, even if it falls short of being particularly memorable or scary, this is a decently entertaining possession potboiler.

A tale as old as time; a Catholic church representative must battle their inner demons to save the soul of a possessed child. Prey for the Devil attempts to retell this tired story with the gimmick of an aspiring female exorcist but never manages to pull together a narrative cohesive or scary enough to rise above a patchwork of familiar possession horror tropes.
It’s 2018. Demonic possession cases have become so prevalent that the Catholic Church has created schools with the sole purpose of teaching priests the Rite of Exorcism while nuns act as bedside nurses to the possessed. Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers) finds herself drawn to the role of exorcist, even sneaking into exclusive male classes taught by Father Quinn (Colin Salmon), to the chagrin of her superior. Her persistent pursuit of exorcism studies and personal approach to nursing eventually puts her on the frontline of the battle to...

In the history of occult horror, few films have achieved lasting status, but 2010’s The Last Exorcism was one of them, marking out director Daniel Stamm as one to watch. This film, also known as The Devil’s Light, sees him return to the subject, and although the result isn’t likely to have the same impact, there’s still a lot to admire about this stylish piece of work.
From the outset, it has something of the cool visual flair of a Seventies thriller, though its heroine, Annie (Jacqueline Byers), is a thoroughly modern woman. She is also a nun, and if those two things seem to be at odds, well, that’s partly what makes it interesting. We learn early on that Annie’s mother was schizophrenic but also seems to have been possessed, and that Annie suffered violent abuse in childhood as a result. Her experiences have left her keen to develop.

After the box office lifted up past 100 million last weekend for the first time since July, propelled by the latest superhero saga Black Adam, it is set to fall back down below the nine-digit line once again this weekend with no major titles opening to keep it afloat. It should still be a “good” weekend relative to the dry spell from mid-August through mid-October which saw seven straight weekends below 65 million, but the numbers may stoop that low again next weekend. Thankfully,Black Panther: Wakanda Forever comes the weekend after and will boast some of the biggest, if not the biggest, opening numbers of the year, but the rocky up-and-down box office of the post-Covid era continues to persist.
The weekend’s biggest release is Lionsgate’s Prey for the Devil, the latest in a busy season of horror films leading up to Halloween which falls on Monday. The film...

“Black Adam” is expected to retain its box office crown over the weekend — not that there’s much competition standing in its way.
With only one new nationwide release, Lionsgate’s supernatural thriller “Prey for the Devil,” the Dwayne Johnson comic book adventure “Black Adam” has plenty of space to repeat the No. 1 spot.
After opening to 67 million, “Black Adam” is projected to add 28 to 31 million in its second weekend in theaters, should ticket sales withstand a similar decline to “Shazam” and other standalone superhero origin stories. So far, the movie has earned 71 million domestically and 75.9 million internationally.
“Prey for the Devil” is hoping to take advantage of Halloween when the PG-13 horror movie lands in 2,900 North American locations. It’s expected to debut to 7 million to 8 million, a decent start given its low budget.
Plus, it’s been a killer market for horror. Except for “Halloween Ends,” which enjoyed...

It seems like the box office is slowly rebounding after a couple slower months, but this weekend, “Black Adam” won’t have much in terms of competition for the top spot, so it will score an easy second weekend at #1 probably with around 28 to 30 million or a little more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
That doesn’t mean that there aren’t any new movies in wide release. In fact, there’s just one, and that’s Lionsgate’s much-delayed and name-changed horror flick “Prey for the Devil,” an exorcism horror drama directed by Daniel Stamm (“The Last Exorcism”). It stars Jacqueline Byers (“Salvation”) as Sister Ann, a rare female exorcist, who has to deal with a few cases of demonic possession. It also stars Virginia Madsen and Colin Salmon, both of whom have quite a bit of genre experience.

Prey For The Devil director Daniel Stamm reveals to CineMovie that in response to the increasing amount of possessions in the present day, the Catholic Church modernized its methods for treating possessions and performing exorcisms by bringing in psychologists and establishing an exorcism school that excludes women. The filmmaker also says the writer based the story on real accounts as told by a Catholic priest who performs exorcisms.

It turns out that Daniel Stamm’s 2010 film The Last Exorcism wasn’t the last after all. Twelve years after the release of the movie that put the German director on the horror map, he is returning to the subgenre for another possession movie. But in some ways, the two films couldn’t be more different. While The Last Exorcism played heavily on the ambiguity of whether the central character was afflicted or faking it, Prey for the Devil cuts right to the chase.
“I love that because in most movies, you have to do the half an hour of doubt, and everybody is sitting there going, ’No, we know we’re in an exorcism movie. It’s probably a demon.’” laughs Stamm. Spoilers: it’s a demon. We’re chatting about what brought him back to the genre, and he explains it comes with expectations which are a blessing and a curse.

Heading into Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation Thursday afternoon, the studio’s Motion Picture Group chairman Joe Drake was trying to figure out what he wanted to say to the room of exhibitors.
He regaled those at the Caesars Palace Colosseum with a story about how he met up with Cineworld and Regal boss Mooky Greidinger at the confab, when he challenged Drake to distinguish how his studio stands out among the rest.
“I smiled when he said it,” said Drake, then underscoring, “Lionsgate is different. We’re different because we’re the underdog who has to punch above our weight. We have to discover what is new every day. We have to find what’s next. We can compete completely on authentic original storytelling.”
“That’s what launches meaningful, long-lasting brands in the discovery of visionary artists,” Drake said.

At some point over the last ten or fifteen years there was a huge commercial boom in possession movies. It felt like suddenly every horror with even the tiniest whiff of supernatural about it was trying to be the new Exorcist, squashing watered-down religious chicanery into everything from cheap found-footage moulds to studio level haunted house movies. For the most part, they were white and western as ever, and very few came even close to scratching the surface of what Williams Friedkin and Blatty managed several decades earlier with their seminal Best Picture nominee.
The Old Ways is ironically, a new breed, however. A very different type of possession movie that comes a helluva lot closer to what The Exorcist got so fundamentally right all those years ago. It is, of course, a horror movie through-and-through, with nasty jumps and plenty of gnarly, go-for-broke bumps to boot. But Christopher Alender...

Ahead of the International premiere of Uncanny Annie at Arrow Video FrightFest Halloween 2019, director Paul Davis reflects on working for Blumhouse, bemoans attitudes to British genre film funding and reveals the movies that inspire him the most…
Welcome back to FrightFest. It’s been a while. Excited?
Very excited. This is very much a homecoming for me having spent the best part of two-years now making movies in Los Angeles. What makes it all the more special is that after two shorts and a documentary, this marks the first time I’ve had a narrative feature film play at FrightFest, and on the 10th anniversary of my first Ff appearance. So this one means a lot to me, as it was something I’ve longed to do ever since Beware The Moon in 2009.
