“As much as I love the Fourth of July, shouldn’t the real independence day be the real day everybody was free?” Dre reasons in black-ish‘s Season 4 premiere. Then, with an argument that’s pretty hard to refute, the ABC comedy points out exactly how much black people have done for the United States of America — and how little acknowledgement they’ve received in return.
After stewing in the audience at Jack and Diane’s school play — a dramatic, sanitized retelling of Columbus’ arrival in America — Dre makes a scene that brings the production to a halt. “I can...

Chris here with more early looks at next year's live action Beauty and the Beast revamp.
While we've only had the briefest of glimpses at what's in store for Disney's next reimagining/bastardization (potato, potahto) of a favorite, we have already been given enough to incite both excitement and dread. However, what the trailer was missing was any kind of hint of how the characters might visually borrow or differ from the original animated masterpiece. Now it looks like we'll be getting a little of both...
Yep, that's Dan Stevens as the transformed Beast in human form giving a very literal interpretation of the open-chested flowy frock of the original. But the design of Lumiere and Cogsworth (voiced by Ewan McGregor and Ian McKellen) is, shall we say... certainly different - any concerns of reliance on CGI will not be abated by this reveal. Whether the film will take the...

As Dre says in the opening narration of tonight's episode, communities need to look out for each other in times of struggle. Black-ish wants to emphasize the importance of a person's past, and explore why we should help out those who helped us.Enter Dre's childhood friend Sha (Faizon Love), who's currently sleeping on his couch 18 hours a day. Sha is an artist with questionable hygiene and eating habits. His presence frustrates Bow and the kids, but Dre remains firm in his decision to support Sha with whatever help he needs. Dre explains that Sha once took a bullet for him, causing Diane to perk up with interest. After learning it was a pellet fired from a Bb gun, Diane is unimpressed. This kid! Dre refuses to kick Sha out, though, and drops the moral of the episode: "You're supposed to take care of your own." At work, Mr. Stevens...

If you've seen indie horror films like A Horrible Way to Die, You're Next, or either V/H/S anthology, then you're already familiar with filmmaking partners Simon Barrett (screenwriter) and Adam Wingard (director). Along with their frequent collaborators (like producer Keith Calder and a bunch of cool actors), Barrett and Wingard have been more than content to create the sort low-budget cool concepts that generally go over really well at festivals and then again on home video. But no more. The gentlemen have temporarily turned their attention on something best described as (yes), a "thriller," but thankfully it's a pretty damn cool thriller.

Head, a new exhibition at Bosi Contemporary, orbits eccentrically around the notion of the human head as an avatar for the human condition. Curators D. Dominick Lombardi and Robert Curcio have gathered 36 idiosyncratic examples of the head as social signifier, troubled mask, and dream-like presence. The eleven artists represented here unsettle us with their evocations of head as the repository of the psyche which demands to make itself known.
The spirit of the show is embodied in Nina Levy's hyper-realist sculpture of a standing woman in a little black dress, one hand clutched across her body, the other thoughtfully cradling her chin. "Spectator" is the perfect gallery goer, except for a monstrously large head which covers her own – the self-conscious ego worn like the costume of a team mascot.

My first thought on Hitchcock: “Uh-oh, prosthetics.” I’m always leery ~ so often they’re invoked to claim a free pass on otherwise lackluster execution, or they hamper the actor in bringing us their interpretation, or both. But it was Hopkins… surely he can break through any excessive reliance, yes?
Yes. Helmed by director Sacha Gervasi (Anvil: The Story of Anvil), Hitchcock rings clear and true, its story and nuance well intact to engaging, seriously lighthearted effect. And while Hopkins could have done with less adjustment (facially, anyway), we still get to see him work. His characterization beautifully reflects the legendary director’s distinctive speech pattern and demeanor while never attempting actual imitation (the mark of the great).

HollywoodNews.com:Directors Guild of America President Taylor Hackford today announced the DGA’s nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television and Commercials for the year 2011.
?The caliber of work being done on television these days is incredible, and our director nominees in each category are an indispensable element to the success of every project — establishing and enhancing the vision and tone, eliciting outstanding performances and furthering the narrative arc through their creative choices,? said Hackford. ?That they are able to create excellence regardless of obstacles like tighter schedules and in an environment in which audiences have more entertainment options to choose from — is a true testament to the importance of directorial skill in television.?
The winners will be announced at the 64th Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.

Chicago – The year was 1959, and the film was “The Diary of Anne Frank,” based on the 1955 Pulitzer Prize winning stage play, which in turn was adapted from the famous diaries of a young girl hiding from Nazi occupiers in WWII Holland. Two actresses, Millie Perkins (Anne) and Diane Baker (her sister Margot), made their movie debuts in this renowned film.
The director of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” the celebrated George Stevens, led a nationwide search for the lead teenage actress to portray Anne, after Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood and Susan Strasberg (Anne in the original play) passed on the role. The film won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress (Shelley Winters), Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography, and was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.
Millie Perkins and Diane Baker were participating in the “Hollywood Celebrities and Memorabilia Show” in September when they talked to HollywoodChicago.com.

Eighty-six-year-old Ted Stevens, former Republican senator from Alaska, was aboard a plane that crashed in the southwestern part of the state on Monday night. Stevens, along with eight fellow passengers, was traveling to a fishing lodge located on Alaska’s Lake Aleknagik. It is not yet known whether there are any survivors. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Sean O’Keffe, a former Nasa administrator, was also on board, although the paper did not have any information about his status. According to The New York Times, “Mr. Stevens survived another plane crash that killed five of seven people on board, including his first wife, Ann, on Dec. 4, 1978. He was traveling on a Lear jet that crashed when landing at Anchorage International Airport, which was renamed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in honor of the senator in 2000.” Spokespeople for Stevens have not confirmed or denied his death, issuing instead a...

Still, he's been doing more than learning how to hula hoop over the last 12 months. Here's a dozen ways Mr. Stevens spent 2008:...
