Director Pete Dodd will pitch “King of the Swamp” at Bordeaux’s Cartoon Movie, kicking off March 5.
A 3D CGI comedy-adventurer, “King of the Swamp” follows Clive, a bad-tempered but endearing old Swamp Monster, in a place where Fairy Tale creatures live under human rules, expected to ignore the abilities that make them different. Along with Sam, a misguided fairy boy and Daisy, a human girl, the reluctant Swamp Monster hero becomes embroiled in a plan to replace humans as the dominant species.
“King of the Swamp” is produced by Dodd’s U.K.-based Mummysboy Ltd., and budgeted at $9 million. It will be Dodd’s second animated feature after 2011’s “Freddy Frogface.”
“This is an original story inspired by watching how children play, fantastically unprejudiced, naturally mixing all sorts of characters that ‘don’t fit’ with one other. There’s a kind of magic in not‘knowing any better...

On Thursday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, the Academy invited movie fans to join in the celebration of the work of this year’s Oscar nominees in the Animated Feature Film category. Although not pictured above, director Tim Burton was on hand for the panel discussion hosted by actor Rob Riggle (Hotel Transylvania, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax).
The nominees discussed how their films were developed, talked about their creative processes, and presented clips illustrating their techniques. All were adamant in saying that animated films are not cartoons and that there is place for both stop-motion and CGI in the genre.
The Animated Feature Film nominees are:
Brave
Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman
This is the second nomination for Mark Andrews and the first in this category. He made his feature directorial debut with Brave.
After interning at Disney, Andrews worked as a story-board artist on several films.

Penguins, Nicole Kidman and Narnia – Paul Howlett picks his film highlights
Christmas Eve
Over the Hedge
(Tim Johnson, Karey Kirkpatrick, 2006) 4.25pm, BBC1
A DreamWorks animated adventure in which Rj, the cynical racoon (laconically voiced by Bruce Willis) teaches a burrowful of innocent woodland animals to forage off the waste of an encroaching housing estate rather than rely on boring old natural food, before inevitably seeing the error of his ways. Plenty of good slapstick fun for kids and cine-literate gags for adults, although it all seems a bit glib compared to Shrek and co.
Corpse Bride
(Tim Burton, Mike Johnson, 2005) 6pm, ITV1
Life, in Burton's typically weird and ghoulish fantasy, is a dull, grey affair: death is much more colourful and fun, as young Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp) discovers when he is whisked into the underworld by the maggoty Corpse Bride (Helena Bonham Carter). Trouble is, he's in love...

Remember Jim Carrey in Liar, Liar, where he forces himself to tell the truth for 24 hours? Well, here Jim Carrey forces himself to answer yes to any request, for a year. Which is upping the ante somewhat, but doesn't make it a better film. This is a return to the manic, gurning, not-very-funny Carrey, as if The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine etc hadn't happened. Just say no.

Kung Fu Panda shut out its competition in every major feature film category at the 36th annual Annie Awards celebrating 2008’s best animated movies. The DreamWorks Animation pic bested critic favorite Wall-e and other nominee Bolt for “Best Feature.”
The surprise win is the first time DreamWorks has beaten a Pixar film for the top prize since 2001’s Shrek over Pixar’s Monster’s Inc. Panda took home fifteen statues Friday night and tied for the most wins ever. The Annie Award has matched the “Best Animated Feature” category at the Academy Awards every single year but one.
I thoroughly enjoyed Kfp, but I was under the impression that Wall-e was a better film all around. While DreamWorks Animation has stepped up its game in recent years, Pixar’s animation was exceptional. This is a major upset, especially since Wall-e went home with nothing. The Oscar race just got even more interesting.

The players: Directors: Sam Fell, Rob Stevenhagen, Writers: Gary Ross, Will McRobb, Chris Viscardi, Voice cast: Matthew Broderick, Tracey Ullman, Emma Watson, Tony Hale, Frances Conroy
Facts of interest: Based on the book by Kate Dicamillo.
The plot: Despereaux is a coureagous little mouse who is ordered to enter the scary Ratland, where he embarks on an adventure to save an entire kingdom.
Our thoughts: I found it nearly impossible to sit through “The Tale of Despereaux” without repeatedly checking the time. The big-screen adaptation of Kate Dicamillo’s beloved book could and should have been an energetic and touching family adventure, but instead, it’s nothing but a lifeless, simplistic bore that falls flat both in terms of story and characters.

The little mouse with the big ears comes to life in Sam Fell and Robert Stevenhagen's "The Tale of Despereaux," an animated family adventure about a mouse who befriends a human princess and likes to read books. How much do the Web's critics like Despereaux? Let's find out:
• Brian Orndorf at Collider: "It's frustrating to watch 'Tale' flounder as much as it does, but when the filmmakers don't seem particularly comfortable with the source material, it doesn't invite the viewer inside to experience any potential magic."
• Joblo's JimmyO: "I for one find more joy in the cute little white mice that you can find at your local pet store."
• George Roush at LatinoReview: "I would go on but the cartoon was so boring, that just writing about it is putting me to sleep. Nobody in the theater seemed to be enjoying it, and I noticed a lot of kids getting restless.

The Tale of Despereaux
Starring Matthew Broderick, Emma Watson, and Dustin Hoffman
Directed by Bob Fell and Rob Stevenhagen
Rated G
The Tale of Despereaux unfolds like a children’s book, which is good news since this is, after all, adapted from a children’s book. Without being overly complicated, its story is a bit of a page-turner, although some of the time you’d be content to just stare at the pictures.
Animation has likely never been a bigger financial boon for studios (in a time when most other movies carry with them huge question marks), and it has never been more on the forefront of emerging technologies. Despite any traditional soft spots you might have for Disney classics like Bambi, this is a true golden age of animated film.
Despereaux comes to us not from Disney, DreamWorks or even Fox, but rather from Universal. Though its only other...

The Tale of Despereaux Directed by: Sam Fell and Robert Stevenhagen Cast: (voices) Matthew Broderick, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson, Tracey Ullman Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins Rating: G Plot: On Soup Day, the Kingdom of Dor loses its Queen in a terrible rat-related accident. Subsequently, the King of Dor forbids both rats and soup. This depresses the residents of Dor who love soup (they seem ok with the rats being banned), including Princess Pea (Watson). When a little mouse named Despereaux (Broderick) learns about Pea's sadness, he sets out to restore happiness to Dor with the help of a Roscuro (Hoffman), a rat looking to make amends. Who’s It For? Children and their parents. It may be a little frightening to very young children, but not too bad. But again...

This miniscule hero, one that uses a sewing needle for a sword and sports extra-large ears, is the holiday movie good guy that parents and their children should seek out first. “The Tale of Despereaux,” Kate Dicamillo’s beloved children’s book, has been described as a story about a mouse, a princess and soup. That’s all true but the classic story and its fun, colorful and moving big-screen adaptation is so much more. There are meaningful issues in the screen story by co-writers Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi (TV’s “Adventures of Pete & Pete”) and the finished screenplay by producer Gary Ross. The story of Despereaux Tilling (voice of Matthew Broderick), a young mouse different from all others, is also a valuable tale about abandonment, the death of a loved one, forgiveness and ultimately friendship. Directors Sam Fell (“Flushed Away”) and Rob Stevenhagen (His credits include “Wallace & Gromit:...

The Academy Awards are slowly creeping up, just three months away now with buzz seeming to only surround a handful of movies. But one piece of the puzzle and a solid indicator of the “Best Animated Feature” Oscar are the Annie Awards, now in their 36th year.
DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda earned 16 total nominations, a tie for the most in the history of the ceremonies. The other movies to pull that off were 2004’s The Incredibles and 2005’s Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
Since the Annies started, the Annie Award for “Best Animated Feature” has predicted the Oscar winner every single time but once.
This is huge for DreamWorks, who makes successful animated movies like Shrek, but hasn’t seem to put out the quality of film that Pixar seems to churn out on a regular basis. Just for comparison, this year’s expert pick for...
