‘Maestro’ wins at Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on the way to Oscars
Image
“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.

Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.

These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

That was two years ago: “Coming 2 America...

Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild 2024 Winners Include ‘Maestro,’ ‘Saltburn,’ and ‘Barbie’
Image
The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”

Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.

TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

As previously announced, Annette Bening (Best Actress nominee for “Nyad”) received the Distinguished Artisan Award, and Oscar- and Emmy-winning make-up...

2021 Muah Awards: ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ and ‘Birds of Prey’ Are Top Makeup, Hairstyling Winners
Image
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” captured the top period feature prizes for makeup and hairstyling at the 8th annual Muahs Guild Awards Saturday night, making it the prohibitive Oscar favorite for the dramatic transformation of Viola Davis as the titular pioneering blues singer. Davis, who landed her fourth Oscar nomination as the sexy, subversive Rainey — the most of any Black actress — was boldly uncompromising in demanding verisimilitude for Netflix’s adaptation of the August Wilson play. Davis was fitted with gold teeth, charcoal-like makeup, and a wig made of horsehair.

Winning both contemporary makeup and hairstyling feature honors at the virtual ceremony was Warner Bros./DC’s “Birds of Prey. He recreated the look of real wooden puppets for the titular hero (played by (Federico Ielapi) and his theater friends by using every prosthetic technique available.

Meanwhile, in what could be a preview of the Emmy race, Netflix’s buzzy “The Queen’s Gambit...

'Guardians of the Galaxy' leads Makeup and Hairstylists Guild nominations
Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. What Did Jason Look Like Unmasked?
If you went and saw Friday the 13th over the weekend, that was the big question. If you bought Neca's 19-inch Jason Voorhees figure (released about two weeks ago), you could get a good idea of what FX artist Scott Stoddard had in store for the film. But now we've got photographic evidence of his complete Jason makeup that was shot for the film before the footage wound up on cutting room floor. Marcus Nispel explains why he opted to make Jason's "unmasking" a bit of a mystery at the end of our interview here . This footage will likely wind up on the DVD when it arrives this summer.

The Folks Behind Friday
This Friday, February 13, Crystal Lake’s favorite son comes home. Every horror fan on the planet is curious about the Friday The 13th re-envisioning, with devotees of Jason’s previous adventures practically foaming at the mouth.

When Fango visits the film’s sweltering Texas set for a glimpse of the mighty Mr. Voorhees in action, everyone on hand is bursting with enthusiasm for the project, and seems to be in disbelief that they’re actually part of making it happen. Indeed, it’s a tall order…no one has ever dared tackle a new version of slasherdom’s most epic tale, which makes for some mighty big shoes to fill. And there’s no possible way that a group of people more dedicated to the task could have been assembled.

Traditionally, producers are the “grown-ups” keeping everything in line, but no one here can escape the fever. “I get excited...

On Set: Scott Stoddard - The Man Behind Jason Voorhees' Mask!
Scott Stoddard is the man with the mask, Jason Voorhees mask to be exact and he's in charge of it for the new Friday The 13th film.

{sidebar id=1}He literally has a case lined with soft foam and in it lies the mask itself. Jason's mask is probably the most well known visage of all time of the fabled Hollywood serial killer line-up and needs constant care and supervision.

>During an interview with Derek Mears, he tells us that he wasn't the only person in the running to play Jason Voorhees in Platinum Dunes' modern version of Friday The 13TH. "It was me and Chris Nelson from The Tripper," Mears tells Bloody-Disgusting on the set in Austin, Texas. "Chris is a good friend of mine. Like, thats the guy you want. What I heard was that Scott Stoddard, they really trust him, and he went, 'Here are the two dudes that I think would be great. Youre asking my opinion? I wont decide, these are the two guys that can do the part.' " In the...
