Horror legend Stephen King has written a fair few books over the years. Ever since he burst on the scene with "Carrie" in 1974, he's given fans at least one book nearly every year. Since most of his work has been extremely popular, he's also established himself as a bit of an authority on the horror front -- and isn't shy about commenting about either the genre or his craft as a writer.
Thanks to King's status as a horror luminary and extensive work in many other genres, we've analyzed his work many times before. You may have seen us discuss why King's endings have a reputation for being disappointing, look into his biggest career regret involving (of all things) a forgotten TV commercial, and examine the one Stephen King book that will never get a film adaption due to the author voluntarily scrubbing it from his catalog.

Steven Spielberg and Stephen King. Two artists at the very top of their fields. King: one of the best-selling authors of all time. Spielberg: the filmmaker who invented the blockbuster. How have these guys never worked together? Well, it's not for lack of trying. In fact, these titans have come very close to teaming up on several occasions. When Spielberg was writing "Poltergeist," he wanted King's help with the script. "It didn't work out because it was before the internet and we had a communication breakdown," King told EW.
Then there was "The Talisman," the fantasy novel King co-wrote with the late Peter Straub. Before the book even hit the shelves, Spielberg scooped up the rights — but neither a film nor a TV adaptation has ever materialized. "Several times he came very close to making it, and there were a lot of discussions about that," King said. It was...

This morning, Suntup Editions has announced a fine press limited edition of the 1971 novel Hell House by Richard Matheson, featuring new exclusive material including an introduction by R.C. Matheson, a foreword by Mike Flanagan and afterword by Nancy A. Collins.
In his foreword, Flanagan reveals that had there been a third season of his ‘Haunting’ series for Netflix, it would have been an adaptation of Hell House!
Flanagan explains, “When I adapted Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a Netflix series, there was much talk about how to continue the Haunting anthology. We followed Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on numerous ghost stories by Henry James. Had there been a third season, I wanted that season to be The Haunting of Hell House. It was actually the first title we explored when Hill House was over, but the rights were spoken for and...

It is 2023, and streaming services are constantly in our faces and on our TVs and devices. Whether it be Max (or The Artist Formerly Known As HBO Max), Apple TV+, Disney+, Paramount+, or old stalwarts like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, it seems like we have unlimited options for content.
But even with genre-specific services like Shudder and Screambox, free-services full of movies like Tubi, or deep cut catalogs like The Criterion Channel or Arrow Player, there are still many movies which are not currently available on any service, so we have to call physical media in for the rescue.
Here are 5 excellent horror movies that are not available to stream, rent, or buy on any digital service, but do have excellent physical media Blu-ray and 4K Uhd releases.

The next book we’ll be seeing from Stephen King is Holly, which is set to reach store shelves on September 5th (you can pre-order a copy Here) and centers on the Holly Gibney character that King has previously written about in the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, The Outsider, and the If It Bleeds story contained in the short story collection of the same name. Now, during an interview with the Talking Scared podcast, King has revealed three more projects that he’s working on or thinking about working on: another short story collection, another Holly Gibney story, and possibly a third book in the Talisman series he started with the late Peter Straub.
King told Talking Scared (with thanks to The Guardian for the transcription) that the short story collection is called You Like It Darker and is expected to be published sometime in 2024. The book has a page count...

Linda Hamilton is joining the cast of “Stranger Things” Season 5, adding yet another genre icon to the Netflix series’ ensemble for its final season. Details on the “Terminator” actress’ role in the series were not revealed, but she joins the likes of Paul Reiser (“Aliens”) and Sean Astin (“The Goonies”) in the show that’s essentially a love letter to 1980s cinema.

When The Boogeyman arrives in theaters later this week, it will be the first feature-length adaptation of one of Stephen King’s oldest short stories. Written in 1973, “The Boogeyman” was first published in Cavalier magazine and then showed up in King’s seminal 1978 collection, Night Shift. The brief story finds a man named Lester Billings in his psychiatrist’s office, recounting how each of his three children were murdered in their bedrooms by a monster in the closet—the “boogeyman” of the title—before he himself comes face to face with the evil entity.
While “The Boogeyman” has served as the basis for a couple of short films, it’s taken 50 years for it to reach the big screen, perhaps because King’s story is only a few pages long, necessitating some expansion and invention for it to work as a feature film. Still, seeing such an old King tale...

Richard Loncraine’s The Haunting of Julia is something of a film maudit. Adapted from Peter Straub’s first horror novel, the film was shot around London in late 1976 under the title Full Circle (as its title card still reads), then made the festival rounds throughout 1977, before barely being released in England in 1978. It belatedly turned up in the U.S. three years later, boasting the more genre-friendly title The Haunting of Julia but still failed to find much of an audience. A lot of this has to do with some significant stylistic differences between Loncraine’s film and the wave of slasher movies that dominated the horror market at the time: Above all, its unhurried pace and relatively restrained depiction of violence stand in stark contrast to the slasher’s relentless plotting and unfettered brutality.

With a long and successful career spanning genres, Mia Farrow may not be considered a horror icon, but she’s certainly deserving of the title in terms of quality over quantity. The two genre efforts in which she starred are exemplary horror movies of their respective eras; while Rosemary’s Baby has been widely lauded since its release in 1968 (Roman Polanski’s personal life controversies notwithstanding), The Haunting of Julia – known internationally as Full Circle – is a hidden gem ripe for rediscovery.
Based on Peter Straub’s 1975 novel Julia, the 1977 British film is directed by Richard Loncraine and written by Dave Humphries (Quadrophenia), with Xtro filmmaker Harry Bromley Davenport receiving a “based on an adaptation by” credit. Although ostensibly a haunted house tale, its ambiguity also allows it to be viewed as a dramatic character study. Scream Factory shines a well-needed light on the atmospheric chiller with a new 4K Uhd + Blu-ray edition.

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are ramping up their next acts at Netflix.
Ten days after announcing an animated series set within the Stranger Things universe, the Duffer brothers have scored a series order for The Boroughs, a sci-fi drama from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance duo Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.
The project, which was first announced last July as part of their nine-figure overall deal with the streamer, is based on an original idea from Addiss and Matthews. The Boroughs takes place in a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert and, like Stranger Things, revolves around a group of unlikely heroes who must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.

The Upside Down is getting the animated treatment.
Netflix on Monday announced a straight-to-series order for an untitled animated series set within the Stranger Things universe.
Plot details for the series are being kept under wraps, though Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer said it would be in the vein of “Saturday morning cartoons,” a reference to such popular 1980s-era series as Masters of the Universe, Jem and the Holograms, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joe, among others. It’s unclear if any of the flagship show’s beloved cast will have voice roles in the animated series.
Sydney-based animation house Flying Bark is handling production on the untitled series, which hails from Eric Robles (Nickelodeon’s Fanboy & Chum Chum). The Duffer brothers will also exec produce the series alongside their Stranger Things collaborator, Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps.

Back in July, we learned that the Duffer Brothers, the creators of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, will be executive producing a live-action series based on the Japanese manga and anime series Death Note for the streaming service. Now Deadline has broken the news that the Death Note series has found its lead writer: Halia Abdel-Meguid, who is said to be a longtime fan of the source material. Halia Abdel-Meguid is set to write and executive produce “Death Note,” a manga adaptation being developed at Netflix. The live action series comes from the company’s overall deal with Upside Down Pictures, the production company launched by “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer earlier this year.
The manga of the same name was written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata and published in 12 volumes between 2003 and 2006. The books follow Light Yagami, a teenage boy who finds the Death Note, a mysterious black notebook that gives him the power to kill anyone whose name and face he knows if he writes their name down. He struggles having such almighty power, and becomes the target of law enforcement around the world.

There is perhaps no writer whose work has been adapted more to screens both big and small than renowned author Stephen King.
Literally dozens of King’s novels, novellas, and short stories have been made into theatrical motion pictures, limited TV series, or streaming movies, ranging from classics like Carrie, The Shining, The Dead Zone, and The Shawshank Redemption to more recent milestones like It and The Outsider. Some, like ‘Salem’s Lot, The Stand, The Shining, and It, have been adapted more than once.
Along the way, there have also been many King adaptations that never actually made it to the screen, or made it in vastly different form than originally intended. For some of these, there were well-known directors and screenwriters who had a vision for the material, but who ended up departing the property as it stalled out, or after that vision got watered down, changed, or scrapped completely.

Stephen King turns 75 years old this week, just two weeks after the publication of his 64th novel, the already acclaimed Fairy Tale. Aside from a trickle of short stories he sold for a number of years starting in 1967, his career really began in earnest with the 1974 arrival of Carrie, his first published novel.
While the book sold modestly in hardcover, it was the sale of the paperback rights and the novel’s subsequent success in that format which enabled King to become a full-time writer and launch the historic career that is still going strong 48 years later and has made him one of the most successful and well-known writers of all time.

He will me deeply missed, especially by his comedy fraternity,” Arnold’s best friend, Chris Spencer said in a separate statement.

It was announced today that acclaimed horror author Peter Straub passed away, an undeniable creative force who completely changed what was possible in the landscape of dark fantasy and horror fiction. Straub wrote with such beautiful world-building detail and rich prose that he often elevated the simplest concepts into full-fledged epics, which is precisely why the Master of Horror himself, Stephen King, collaborated with him on their collaborative masterpiece, "The Talisman."
While King has been the most adapted author of the modern era, Straub has only had two novels brought to life. In 1977, "The Haunting of Julia" was released inspired by his novel "Julia," but the film that should have had studios vying to gain the rights to any and all of Straub's works came in 1981 when Universal adapted his haunting novel "Ghost Story."
Straub published the novel in 1979, which became a national bestseller and helped cement Straub as one of the horror fiction greats.

Charlotte Colbert’s atmospheric debut is anchored by Alice Krige as a fading screen icon whose trip to a Scottish retreat unearths sinister secrets
This viscerally atmospheric directorial feature debut from the Franco-British artist and film-maker Charlotte Colbert arrives with a stamp of approval from a maestro of Italian horror (“Dario Argento presents”) and a glowing endorsement from Mexican Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuarón, who says it “sits in the tradition of great psychological horror films”. A chilling tale of buried secrets and dreamy vengeance with a subversive feminist edge, this latterday fable marries the spiralling, self-reflexive narrative of Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House with echoes of the off-kilter visual sensibility of the 1962 cult oddity Carnival of Souls. A thrillingly intense central performance by Alice Krige (who earned her genre spurs in the underrated 1981 screen adaptation of Peter Straub’s Ghost Story) is the lightning rod at the core of the film,...

Fresh off some jaw-dropping viewership numbers, “Stranger Things” Season 4 Vol. 1 scored its fourth consecutive Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nominations, but acting hopefuls Sadie Sink and Millie Bobby Brown ultimately didn’t make the cut.
The penultimate season of “Stranger Things” received 13 nods in total, shy of the previous record of 18 total nominations in Season 1 and devoid of any acting nominations at all.
Other nominations for Season 4 Vol. 1 include Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup, Outstanding Casting and Outstanding Music Supervision.
Netflix released Season 4 Vol. 1 on May 27, just before the May 31 deadline for 2022 Emmy consideration, so only the first seven episodes were eligible for nominations.

"Stranger Things" may be coming to an end, but the Duffer Bros. are certainly keeping their plates full. In conjunction with their production company Upside Down Pictures, Netflix has hitched their wagons for more projects from Matt and Ross Duffer, including a series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub's fantasy novel, "The Talisman."
The companies will also be working in tandem with Paramount Television in Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, with "Stranger Things" co-executive producer and writer Curtis Gwinn along for the ride. Spielberg first snagged the rights to "The Talisman" before the book went to print back in 1982, but after...

“Stranger Things” is the gift that will keep on giving. Not only has the current fourth season reportedly broken viewership records for Netflix, it’s also about to expand with new projects that the Duffer Brothers are creating through their new Upside Down Pictures production company. Are you excited for things to get even “Stranger”?
Perhaps the most interesting news from the announcement is a stage play “set within the world and mythology of ‘Stranger Things'” to be produced by Sonia Friedman, Stephen Daldry (who will also direct), and Netflix. I’m eager to see how a visual effects extravaganza like “Stranger Things” will translate to the theater — though it worked out just fine for “Harry Potter.” We’re also getting a live-action “Stranger Things” spinoff “based on an original idea by The Duffer Brothers.”

Fresh off the enormous success of Stranger Things Season 4, which has crossed one billion hours viewed on Netflix, the Duffer Brothers are lining up multiple projects.
Matt and Ross Duffer, who have a joint overall deal with Netflix, have formed the production company Upside Down Pictures, Deadline reports.
News of the production arm also comes with confirmation that a Stranger Things spinoff is officially in the works.
Such a project has been teased in the past, but this is the first official word we're getting.
The Duffer brothers have been vocal about making the project something very different from the beloved Netflix hit, so we should probably expect a new location and characters.
Other projects in the works as part of their overall deal include a stage play set in the Stranger Things universe, a series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub's The Talisman, and a live-action iteration of Death Note.

“Stranger Things 4” is over – isn’t that a bummer!? This two-part season had it all: monsters, mayhem and mild flirting. Plus, we learned more about Eleven and the Upside Down, and we got the very best villain in the show’s history with the dark sorcerer Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower). And it all came packaged in supersized episodes (something that we are very Ok with). “Stranger Things 4” was arguably the best, most ambitious season of the beloved Netflix series to date.
So: Now what are you supposed to do?
Considering Season 4 was released nearly three years after “Stranger Things 3,” we could be in for a long wait. And to fill that time, we can can at least get to pondering the biggest questions that Season 4 left us with.
Giant spoilers for the end of “Stranger Things 4” follow. If you haven’t watched yet, turn back now!

Finally, the Daily Dead “Class Of” series has reached my beloved birth year, 1981. For the genre, 1981 signifies an important moment in the history of horror. With the introduction of two slasher icons, Michael Myers in 1978 and Jason Voorhees in 1980; the beginning of the sequel boom that would dominate the rest of the decade was born in 1981 with Halloween 2 and Friday the 13th Part 2. These two sequels are merely the introduction to the rise of slasher cinema for the 80s, with 1981 providing a variety of examples like The Burning, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Funhouse, Happy Birthday to Me, Final Exam, Night School, Student Bodies, and My Bloody Valentine.
1981 also proved the best year in the history of horror for werewolf movies. The iconic American Werewolf in London set the gold standard in practical transformation effects. The Howling is a demonstration of how horror and humor can coexist perfectly. Wolfen...
