“Alien: Romulus,” out now in theaters, is a surprise late-summer hit and proof positive that the “Alien” franchise is far from over.
And the new movie, plus the upcoming FX series “Alien: Earth,” have us wanting to look back at the series – the highs, the lows and the what-were-they-thinkings. Below is the definitive ranking of every “Alien” movie.
Chest-bursters and face-huggers are, of course, welcome.
20th Century 9. “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007)
The poster for “Alien vs. Predator: Requiem” is stylized as “Avp R,” which emphasizes the fact that the movie was actually rated R, unlike the earlier PG-13-rated “Alien vs. Predator.” And, in that sense, the movie delivers the goods – there’s a ton of splatter in this installment.
A direct sequel to the earlier extraterrestrial team-up movie, “Avp R” is set in a small Colorado town, where a predator/alien hybrid from the end of the previous movie is on a bloodthirsty rampage.

It's not mentioned out loud in any of the movies, but the alien species in the "Predator" series is called the Yautja, pronounced "Yah-oot-Cha." Although there have been comics and other pieces of expanded universe ephemera to explain where the Yautja come from and what their civilization might be like, the movies have depicted them merely as a species of intergalactic hunters that have arranged their entire society around the challenge of hunting for sport. They could have a rich arts community back on their homeworld, or perhaps a stirring and complicated political culture, but we've only ever seen the hunting part of their society. Perhaps the hunters are merely wealthy weekend warriors who can afford to go game hunting on other planets, while other Yaujta protest their wasteful brutality.
Throughout their multiple film appearances, the Yautja have mostly hunted humans, although there are two notorious films from the 2000s...

On paper, "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" sounds like a fun, interesting movie. Two giants of the sci-fi horror world coming together to fight in a small suburban town full of victims? Sounds sick. Unfortunately, the 2007 movie wasn't exactly what many fans and critics were expecting from a concept like that, resulting in a critical and commercial flop that still has a 12 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
There's a good reason why people didn't like what they got after being promised a suburban alien clash: A lot of those clashes couldn't actually be seen very easily. "Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem" is a movie that has been lambasted for how poorly lit it is, with many critical scenes and fights playing out in near-total darkness. Seriously: If you're wanting to watch the movie, you better expect to turn up your television's settings beforehand.

All the rage right now in CGI is digital de-aging, the act of making an actor look decades younger (or sometimes older) on screen by digitally smoothing out wrinkles and tightening jaw lines. Why hope that a young, untested actor can be convincing as a lookalike Samuel L. Jackson when we have the real thing right here? Imagine photoshopping a picture for a magazine, but now do that over and over for every scene of a movie. It’s not a complicated process, and the technology hasn’t advanced drastically dating back to the first instance in 2006, but the VFX artists have matured to the point that filmmakers can go entire movies with a de-aged actor rather than just a few scenes. Here are just a few actors who have gone under the digital knife.
Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen – “X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006)

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the brand new trailer for next summer’s disaster-suspense film San Andreas.
The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson and Paul Giamatti.
Shot on location in The Gold Coast and Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and in Los Angeles and San Francisco, San Andreas is slated to open in theatres in both 3D and 2D format on Friday, May 29, 2015.
This isn’t the first film where Southern California has been destroyed on the silver screen. San Francisco (1936) is based on the April 18, 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Directed by Woody Van Dyke, the drama stars Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, and Spencer Tracy.
Airport originated the 1970s disaster film genre and audiences were deluged with a series of movies including the original Earthquake (1974). These films always included a huge cast, where many of the actors usually perished by the climax.

Airport originated the 1970s disaster film genre and audiences were deluged with a series of movies including the original Earthquake (1974). These films always included a huge cast, where many of the actors usually perished by the climax.

Iko Uwais isn’t a household name just yet, but anyone who has seen any of director Gareth Evans’ last three films — Merantau, The Raid, The Raid 2 — likely remembers both his face and his sick moves. If you’re of such an ilk, the kind of moviegoer who relishes in the strange and ambitious fare of the science fiction genre, you are probably also away of the 2010 alien invasion film Skyline from VFX wiz-kids Greg and Colin Strause. Made on a small budget and delivered with great scale, Skyline was an imperfect but remarkably impressive entry in the packed landscape of alien invasion cinema. Now these two things are coming together. Badass fighter + badass alien effects. You’re welcome. More details after the jump, including word of yet another Indonesian ass-kicker’s involvement. Beyond Skyline, which begins filming in early December in Indonesia, will be written and directed by Liam O’Donnell, who...

It’s taken them some time to get around to it, but VFX specialists-turned-producer/directors Greg and Colin Strause are now planning a spin-off to their 2010 sci-fi adventure Skyline. The sibling duo has Frank Grillo and The Raid’s Iko Uwais set for Beyond Skyline. The brothers have also handed directorial chores off for this one to Liam O’Donnell, who co-wrote the first film and will both script and call the shots now. While the original saw characters in Los Angeles reacting to an alien invasion of the Earth, the new film will expand the canvas but keep the stories at the human level, with Uwais the leader of an underground resistance that forms against the occupying extra terrestrial forces. Grillo, meanwhile, will be a father looking for his child, who was snatched by the pesky aliens. Also aboard is Uwais’ Raid co-star Yayan Ruihan, with the pair acting...

• Kevin Bacon is in talks for Jungle. The thriller is based on the true story of Yossi Ghinsberg, who penned a memoir about his dangerous trip to the Amazon jungle where he was accompanied by two friends and a mysterious guide. If the deal goes through, Bacon will play the Austrian guide, Karl. Greg McLean, whom Bacon worked with on 6 Miranda Drive, will direct. Justin Monjo adapted Ghinsberg's 2005 book for the screen. The film will begin shooting early next year in Australia and Colombia. In addition to the film, Ghinsberg's story also inspired the one-hour Discovery Channel docu-drama series, I Shouldn't Be Alive.

Back in 2010, Universal's genre arm, Rogue Pictures, released the truly awful Skyline into theaters. With a $10 million budget the film grossed $66.8 million worldwide. Despite warnings from a few readers I watched it a few months after its release and it prompted me to write a scathing evaluation, though looking back it reminded me of what co-director siblings Greg and Colin Strause said on their audio commentary track toward the end of the film: Colin says, "The secret idea with this movie is that it's basically like a comic book movie and this is the prequel." Greg again adds his ever important two cents, "Yeah, this is the origin story." Colin then explains the nature of how these things work, "Normally you do the regular movie first and then you'd come back and shoot the prequel later. We basically shot the prequel first. And being able to do that, and ending...

The Cannes Film Festival is best known for debuting daring new cinema, like Ryan Gosling's directorial debut Lost River or the Nicole Kidman vehicle Grace of Monaco. Meanwhile, the Cannes Film Market is a hotbed of distribution deals both foreign and domestic. There, amid titles like Kidnap and Skiptrace, the rumored Skyline sequel is gaining momentum. Dark Horizons has learned that a sequel to the 2010 low-budget sci-fi thriller Skyline is being sold overseas. Called Beyond Skyline, this film will presumably continue the alien invasion premise of the first film, but this time without The Brothers Strause at the helm. Instead, Skyline producer and co-writer Liam O'Donnell has been brought on board, marking his directorial debut. No details on the plot have yet been released. But the above sales poster has been shared on Facebook. Greg and Colin Strause are special effects artists who crafted a career in visual effects...

If you saw brothers/co-directors Greg and Colin Strause’s 2010 alien invasion movie “Skyline,” then you know that the ending of the film sets up a sequel. Not a terrible surprise, I know. These days, every genre film is almost expected to launch a franchise or, as is the fashion, a trilogy. “Skyline” was no different. Unfortunately a sequel never happened, even though the film did earn $66 million worldwide from a relatively cheap $10 million budget. While that may sound like a lot, the movie was heavily promoted beyond its budget, so $66 really wasn’t that much. And so, we never really found out what happened to the two main characters played by Eric Balfour and Scottie Thompson. But maybe we’ll finally find out when director Liam O’Donnell directs the sequel, “Beyond Skyline,” which is currently being sold to potential buyers (and financiers) over at Cannes. To help with the sale,...

Well. This is a bit on the strange side given the lack of any fanfare or news. If the following report from The Georgetown Times is to be believed, we may just be seeing Barry Levinson's tale of things gone horribly awry in a small town, The Bay, this October.
According to The Times the ecological horror movie that involved a large cast of people from Georgetown County will be released in October. This is according to the S.C. Film Commission, who heard from the producers of The Bay that the film would be released later this year.
The movie, first called Isopod, has no trailer and no movie poster. There is still no exact day that the movie will be released.
The film, which cost about $2 million to produce, was directed by Oscar-winning producer Barry Levinson. It is one in a series of horror films that includes Insidious and Paranormal Activity.

Will Rupert Murdoch go down for Nine Months or escape on Titanic? We launch our own inquiry into Fox-backed films
Hugh Grant has declared that he had no idea that Nine Months, the dopey pregromcom he made in 1995 with Julianne Moore, was a Fox movie – that is to say, one for which Rupert Murdoch was ultimately responsible. He says that if he knew then what he knows now, he never would have accepted the role.
Murdoch bought Fox in 1985 – he had to become a Us citizen to do so. But if there was a searching internal inquiry into quality at Fox – similar to the searching internal inquiry into ethics avowedly taking place at News International – how would the arguments stack up? What movies made or distributed by Mr Murdoch would be adduced in evidence? As the defendant sits impassively in the dock, perhaps behind bullet-proof glass, here are the opposing...

Photo: Warner Bros. I was completely out of the loop when it came to Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a film predominantly known at this point as the worst reviewed movie of the last decade by RottenTomatoes standards. So, when I decided I would follow in the footsteps of my previous look at Skyline and regularly take a look back at movies considered to be among the worst ever that I had not yet seen, there was no better place to start.
In short, yes, this is a bad film. Terrible in fact. Is it the worst? That's all relative to the discussion. Worst in what way? Plot? Characters? Execution? Entertainment? The production of Hollywood movies and the way in which they are commissioned is so brazenly exploitative they would make a pimp blush. Even a respected old hand like Barry Levinson (Rain Man) is not immune from such realities as his new film, a eco-horror thriller The Bay, demonstrates. A combination of the “found footage” type of cinema that is extremely cheap to make and particularly suited to suspenseful/horror type genre pieces, as well as the sort of ecological based threat that sees the dying planet we live on used as a basis for more fantastical manifestations.

Formerly known as Isopod, it has been announced today that director Barry Levinson‘s found footage eco-horror film The Bay will be released by Lionsgate. But he has been responsible for more classics such as Rain Man, Sleepers, and Wag the Dog. The Bay will see him returning to his horror roots found in Sphere.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson has just found a distributor for his first horror film [1], a found footage tale of what happens when a deadly disease moves from the sea onto the land, called The Bay. Lionsgate has acquired the rights to the film, which was produced by the team behind Paranormal Activity and Insidious: Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli. Read the official press release and more after the break. One of the most intriguing aspects of The Bay is that we finally get a found footage movie from an experienced filmmaker. An Oscar-winner at that. The biggest successes in the genre - The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity, just to name a few - all came from relatively inexperienced directors at the time, so it's going to be interesting to see if Levinson's decades of experience in almost every genre - from sports, to dramas,...
