Essentially acting as a feature-length riff on The Twilight Zone’s “It’s a Good Life,’ co-writer/director Elbert van Strien’s “Marionette” — which takes its title quite literally — is a moody Scotland-based thriller concerning a young boy who claims that he can control individuals thoughts and actions. Featuring a confident performance from newcomer Elijah Wolf, “Marionette” is a bit less than the sum of its individual parts.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American distribution rights to At the Ready, the documentary from Maisie Crow that follows three El Paso teenagers who embark on careers in law enforcement as the debates surrounding immigration and police reform in America reach fever pitches. The doc will be released in theaters and on digital platforms October 22.
Crow’s film focuses on students at El Paso’s Horizon High School, 10 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, who are part of a criminal justice club, which includes mock-ups of drug raids and active-shooter takedowns as they eye careers with the Border Patrol and in policing and customs enforcement. They soon discover their choices may clash with the values and people they hold most dear.
Crow, Hillary Pierce and Abbie Perrault are producing. Gravitas previously released Pierce’s immigration doc The River and the Wall.

The atmospheric story of a boy who says he can control his therapist’s actions with his thoughts focuses too much on philosophical questions
Therapist Dr Marianne Winter (Thekla Reuten) hopes to escape her own traumatic past in upstate New York by taking up a position treating troubled children in a remote Scottish town. However, the forbidding Victorian municipal building that houses her new consulting room offers no sanctuary, and she’s soon unsettled by a 10-year-old patient (Elijah Wolf), who claims he can control her actions with his thoughts.
Repression (previously entitled Marionette) gamely endeavours to live up to the Hitchcockian promise of its title. It started out as a Dutch-language short by director Elbert van Strien 27 years ago, and here he knowingly utilises all the gothic potential of a new setting. As one visitor to Marianne’s rooms remarks: “Isn’t it a bit depressing? All this panelling,...

"You have to kill him... Before he kills you..." Signature Ent. in the UK has released an official trailer for an indie psychological thriller titled Repression, made by Dutch filmmaker Elbert van Strien, and shot mostly in Scotland. This was originally titled Marionette before the update for its VOD debut this fall. Repression is described as "a gripping and twisty Hitchcock-esque thriller set in Scotland with a staller British cast," including Peter Mullan and Rebecca Front. The film tells the story of a therapist, Marianne Winter played by Dutch actress Thekla Reuten, who loses her grip on reality when a ten-year-old boy claims he can control her future. It also features Bill Paterson, Sam Hazeldine, Emun Elliott, Pearl Chanda, and Elijah Wolf as the boy Manny. This has some intense close-ups - a mix of super wide angle close-up shots (nearly fish eye) and regular close-ups. I want to know...

The idea of a heroine with an increasingly shaky hold on sanity is a familiar device in thrillers and it's put to serviceable if overburdened use in Elbert van Strien's Marionette - showing at the Cannes Marche this week. Marianne Winter (Thekla Reuten) is newly arrived at an (I think) Aberdonian child psychotherapy practice, although it's best not to dwell to much on the geography here or you'll go as mad as Marianne's patients. The set-up is all Georgian architecture wood panelled rooms that have a hint of portent and a handy basement, and this is where she will gradually learn her predecessor Dr McVittie lost control of his own mind.
Fans of this sort of tale will be unsurprised to learn that away from the flat grey light of Scotland, Marianne had a previous, sunnier life, complete with, in even less of a surprise,...

The delightfully hot Charlize Theron ('Monster') is set to star and produce the remake of Dutch horror flick 'Zwart Water'. The Summit Entertainment production is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson ('The Exorcism of Emily Rose') will helm the project from the script adapted by scribe Paul Harris Boardman, who also penned 'Hellraiser: Inferno' and 'Urban Legends: Final Cut'. Charlize (below) will also be steaming up the specs of many-a sci-fi geek next Summer when she stars in Ridley Scott's new 'Alien'-esque prequel 'Prometheus'. The original ghost story from writer/director Elbert van Strien was released last year as 'Two Eyes Staring' internationally, which is surprising due to the actual translation being 'Black Water', and starred Hadewych Minis, Barry Atsma, Isabelle Stokkel and Charlotte Arnoldy. Check out the plot info from the original below.

One of the films to play Fantastic Fest in Austin last month was the Dutch ghost story thriller Zwart Water, aka Two Eyes Staring. Germain wasn't thrilled with the film, calling it a good story that wasn't handled well. It's one that sounds like prime material for a remake, and indeed that is something that is already in motion. Even as the film played Fantastic Fest, the remake rights were in the hands of Charlize Theron's production company. Now The Exorcism of Emily Rose writer/director Scott Derrickson has been hired to co-write and direct the remake, which will star Theron.THR [1] says that Theron's company, Denver and Delilah Films, has tapped Derrickson and his Emily Rose co-writer Paul Boardman to write, and Derrickson will direct. The film is about "a nine-year girl old who discovers that her new friend is not only sinister but also is her mother's dead twin.

Bullhead and Two Eyes Staring have nothing in common except their country of origin. They're both from Belgium, two of the three films from that country playing Fantastic Fest this year, in fact. Two Eyes Staring was optioned by Charlize Theron last year for an American remake and is about a woman who inherits her childhood house after her estranged mother passes away. There, her young daughter begins to have visions that illuminate mommy's seedy past. That's a very female-centric film and Bullhead is the opposite. Winner of Best Picture in the Amd & Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition [1] and the Belgian contender for the 2012 Academy Awards, Bullhead is about a muscle-bound, hormone-peddling gangster who himself has a huge childhood secret that has affected everything he's done since. One is realistic and the other ethereal; one has compelling points but both have major flaws. Bullhead is two and a half really...

Guess it's just a centipede-y kind of day. Aubrey already showed you a new preview image from "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence." Now I've got the info on where you'll be able to see the film for the very first time: Austin's Fantastic Fest, on September 22. The deranged depravity debuts as this year's Opening Night Film.
Along with the announcement that director Tom Six's sequel to everyone's favorite ass-to-mouth horror movie will make its world premiere at the festival, Fantastic Fest also solidified the remainder of its lineup today. You can see it all below, but here are a few noteworthy highlights: the Us premiere of Morgan Spurlock's San Diego Comic-Con documentary, "Episode IV: A Fan's Hope," a Cuban zombie movie called -- you're gonna love this -- "Juan of the Dead," and a 30th anniversary screening of "An American Werewolf in London" with makeup artist Rick Baker in attendance.

Hollywoodnews.com: Only the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin would try and use the words “Fantastic” and “Human Centipede” in the same sentence. Yet it’s that unique taste in spectacular genre cinema that keeps thousands flocking to Fantastic Fest in Austin each fall, and this year’s slate shouldn’t disappoint.
Tom Six’s sequel to his vile “Human Centipede” will hold its world premiere on opening night of this year’s Fantastic Fest, which runs Sept. 22-29 in Austin, Tex.
Other notable films programmed for this year’s fest include a retrospective screening of John Landis’s “An American Werewolf in London,” the Texas premiere of Jeff Nichols’s “Take Shelter,” and Morgan Spurlock’s “Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope,” which will close this year’s event.

You have to go all the way back to 1997's The Devil's Advocate to find a horror movie on Charlize Theron's CV (unless you count Reindeer Games). Given the mill she's put through on that film, it's not that surprising that she shied away from the genre subsequently, but that should be about to change, with the news that Theron has personally picked up the rights to Two Eyes Staring. The original Dutch film, titled Zwart Water at home, was directed by Elbert van Strien, and written by van Strien and Paulo van Vliet. It's the story of a nine-year-old girl who discovers that her new best friend has some sinister connections to dark secrets in her family's past. You can check out the trailer here: it's not subtitled, but you'll get the gist.Zwart Water opened in The Netherlands this spring. It hasn't had an international release so far,...

The story follows a nine-year-old girl who discovers her sinister friend is the ghost of her mother's dead twin. van Strien and Paulo van Vliet penned the script.
Theron will produce through her Denver & Delilah production banner and several "A-list directors" are currently in talks about helming the feature.

Caught this little blurb about Charlize Theron snapping up remake rights to a Dutch horror movie called “Two Eyes Staring” that caught my attention. What got me interested wasn’t the idea that Theron is going around buying remake rights, but the quick synopsis of the original movie, which goes something like this: …the story of a nine-year-old girl who discovers her sinister friend is the ghost of her mother’s dead twin. Interesting. Here’s a slightly longer synopsis from IMDb.com: Nine-year-old Lisa discovers her sinister new friend is the ghost of the dead twin of Lisa’s mother. Lisa’s father also begins to suspect his wife of hiding a terrible secret, resulting in deadly consequences… Theron is probably eyeing (ahem) the mother character, originally played by Hadewych Minis, with Isabelle Stokkel playing the young girl with the ghost for a friend. The original, called “Zwart water...

Two highly-anticipated second feature films from U.S. underground filmmakers will be making their World Premieres all the way over at the 64th annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, which will run for twelve days on June 16-27. The films are Rona Mark’s The Crab and Zach Clark’s Vacation!.
The Crab, which screens on June 21, is the touching story of a verbally abusive man born with two enormous, mutant-like hands; while Vacation!, which screens on June 20, tracks four urban gals let loose in a sunny seaside resort down South.
Both Mark and Clark previously screened their debut features at Eiff. Mark’s Strange Girls screened there in 2008 and Clark’s Modern Love Is Automatic screened in 2009. Both films also ended up as runners-up in Bad Lit’s annual Movie of the Year award, again Strange Girls in 2008 and Modern Love in 2009. Sadly, these two masterpieces are still unavailable on...

With its story of a young family moving to a big old house in the country only to discover a ghost in the attic - a ghost that preys primarily on the family's young daughter - Elbert van Strien's Zwart Water may seem a touch familiar. We've seen this basic story done many times now in locations all around the globe. But, really, when it comes to ghost stories it's all been done before meaning it's not so much about novelty any more, but execution. And Van Strien seems to be doing just fine on that count.
With the Dutch release coming soon the first trailer for the film has arrived, showcasing the handsome visuals, slowly building mood, and a few legitimately disturbing images. Check it below.
