An unconventional medical drama based on real events, Midnight Family introduces us to the compelling world of private ambulance services in Mexico City. At the center of this thrilling series is young Marigaby Tamayo, who juggles her dream of becoming a doctor with her current work as a paramedic alongside her family.
Marigaby’s family runs an ambulance that acts as their livelihood, transporting patients to hospitals across the bustling metropolis. But unlike typical ambulance crews, they compete fiercely with other private services, racing to be first on the scene of emergencies. Between navigating this high-stakes environment and her studies, Marigaby’s schedule leaves little time to spare.
From the very first episode, it’s clear Marigaby possesses a passion for medicine that drives her to excel in both roles. Yet balancing these demanding worlds presents ongoing challenges. How will she manage the expectations of her career ambitions alongside her family’s needs?...

Skynet is making its return: the trailer for the Netflix animated series “Terminator Zero” has been revealed.
The series follows the aftermath of Skynet, an AI being, gaining consciousness and waging its war against humanity in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” It becomes self-aware on Aug. 29, 1997, after which a war rages on for decades.
“Terminator Zero” is set in 2022 and follows a soldier, Eiko (Rosario Dawson), who is sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She journeys back to 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee (André Holland), who is working on another AI system, Kokono (Sonoya Mizuno) to compete with Skynet. Although it exists in the Terminator universe, it centers entirely around new characters.
The trailer sees Lee attempting to save the Earth from Skynet, while being hunted down by an assassin from the future.

"There she is, guys - the most godforsaken castle in all of Mexico." Rlje Films has released a new official Us trailer for the indie horror comedy DeadTectives, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Tony West. This first premiered at the Sitges Film Festival in 2018, and it also played at Mexico's Morbido Film Fest, Fantasporto, and the Seattle Film Festival. A team of reality TV ghost hunters experience true paranormal activity for the first time while filming a make-or-break episode in the most haunted mansion in Mexico. Facing cancellation on the one hand and supernatural entities on the other, the team must figure out a way to bust the ghosts, deliver the episode of a lifetime, and escape with their lives intact. Starring Chris Geere, David Newman, José María de Tavira, and Tina Ivlev. Cool concept, but this looks so impressively bad. And why is this trailer so dark?...

Taking place in the early 1970s in Mexico City, Netflix's Roma is a semibiographical take on the life of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón, following a formative year in the life of a middle-class family and their live-in housekeeper. The film allowed Netflix to score its first-ever Oscar nomination for best picture.
Yalitza Aparicio, who makes her debut in the film as Cleodegaria "Cleo" Gutiérrez, one of the family's maids, also became the first Indigenous woman (and only the second Mexican woman) to get an Oscar nomination for best actress. Another exciting individual honor for the film: a best supporting actress nomination for Marina de Tavira, who plays Sra. Sofía, the secretive mother of four and matriarch of the family.

Mexico City, Feb 1 (Ians/Efe) Mexican actress Ana Claudia Talancon said she was a huge fan of children and soccer, the two subjects of her film, "El sueno de Ivan".

Talancon, who press reports say is separated from husband and fellow actor Jose Maria de Tavira, told reporters that appearing in "El sueno de Ivan" was a positive experience because it allowed her to perform with children.

There is an effect to The Imperialists Are Still Alive, but it’d be hard to say that it’s a cumulative one. In spite of the inherently divisive subject matter and seemingly confrontational title, Imperialists never articulates any thoughts or feelings about either its setting (modern lower Manhattan) or subject matter (cultural identity and racial profiling in the war on terror) that feel solidified, let alone coherent. Scenes play out, characters talk, life goes on in the subclass of artists so well-represented in independent cinema, but no attributes that could be considered defining ever emerge. This isn’t always a problem in film, and can even be liberating, but if writer/director Zeina Durra was not trying to strike any larger nerves, she certainly chose an unusual playground in which to play.
When we are first introduced to professional artist Asya (Elodie Bouchez), she is posing in a full-body nude shot,...

From its lengthy introductory shot of the nude protagonist fussily mixing feminism, art and vanity to a cryptic, haunting closing shot I shouldn't spoil, a number of factors make Zeina Durra's feature debut The Imperialists Are Still Alive! among Sundance 2010's most fascinating films. None, however, make it more intriguing than the way it compels one to describe the indescribable -- starting with Durra herself, a London-bred, New York-trained filmmaker of Jordanian/Lebanese/Bosnian/Palestinean heritage. Imperialists! presents her alter-ego Asya (Elodie Bouchez), a successful artist in Manhattan with links to both the Palestinean resistance and upper-crust Western hegemony. Negotiating between the two with her tight circle of comrades, Asya falls in love with a Mexican lawyer/Ph.D candidate (Jose Maria de Tavira) and avoids the prying eyes and ears of spy agencies including the CIA, Mossad and Mi6. Oh, and it's a comedy. See where I'm going with this?...

It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: U.S. Documentary Competition This year’s 16 films were selected from 862 submissions. Each film is a world premiere. Bhutto(Directors: Jessica Hernandez and Johnny O'Hara; Screenwriter: Johnny O'Hara)—A riveting journey through the life and work of recently assassinated Benazir Bhutto,...

The Sundance Film Festival has unveiled the lineup of films playing in competition from January 21 through January 31, 2010. The early fest typically debuts some of the best films the year has to offer, like 2009’s Precious, (500) Days of Summer, and Moon.
I’m bummed I won’t be in Park City, Utah next month because the lineup looks great, and these are just the films playing in competition. Here’s a few that stood out to me:
The Allen Ginsberg trial film Howl starring James Franco, a documentary by Alex Gibney (a truly great filmmaker) on Jack Abramoff, Mark Ruffalo’s directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious, a doc about Joan Rivers, the directorial debut of “How I Met Your Mother” star Josh Radnor titled Happythankyoumoreplease (I wrote a glowing script review of it here), Hesher with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Natalie Portman, and Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Last year notable films such as this year's major Oscar contenders Precious and An Education debuted at Sundance 2009 as did audience and critical favorite (500) Days of Summer.
As for this year's crop I have highlighted a few titles among the list below in red, but I have primarily done so considering the names attached to the pictures not necessarily based on any advanced buzz I've heard around any of the films. Names to look out for include Ryan Gosling,...

From Spencer Susser, the director of the incredible zombie short I love Sarah Jane comes Hesher, his first feature which stars Jgl!
David Michôd's Australian thriller Animal Kingdom which stars Guy Pearce.
From Taiki Waititi, director of Eagle vs Shark comes Boy which we previously reported on, but then it was known as The Volcano.

Although the Sundance Film Festival might have tried to wring some extra sunshine from its selections last year, the 2010 lineup looks to be back to its typical mirthless self. One could say it has gone from "You gotta give 'em hope" to "You gotta give 'em mope."
"That's our filmmakers," festival director John Cooper said with an amused mix of pride and resignation. "There's some lightness in here somewhere."
Yes, it's wedged back behind the assassinations, political corruption, war carnage, crumbling educational system and Khmer Rouge revelations. The fest, which runs Jan. 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah, might start to feel like 11 Days of Glummer.
But perhaps that's to be expected. The implosion of the independent distribution system amid the ever-present threats of a maimed economy and two wars has provided festival organizers and filmmakers an opportunity to cut loose and follow their probing passions,...
