CBS has given a series order to Tommy, a police drama starring Emmy winner Edie Falco. The project hails from Homicide creator Paul Attanasio, Amblin Television and CBS TV Studios.
Tommy had been the last CBS pilot in serious contention at CBS. The network already picked up dramas Evil, FBI: Most Wanted and All Rise and comedies Bob Hearts Abishola, Broke, Carol’s Second Act and The Unicorn.
CBS is not specifying whether series are for fall or midseason, but I hear Tommy is earmarked for midseason to accommodate Falco’s schedule. The series is currently searching for a showrunner.
This is the second pilot by Attanasio with Amblin TV and CBS TV Studios to go to series at CBS, following Bull, which was just renewed for a fourth season. (Amblin TV ended its involvement in that series in the wake of the sexual harassment controversy involving series star Michael Weatherly.

Falco stars as a former high-ranking NYPD officer who becomes the first female Chief of Police for Los Angeles. She uses her unflinching honesty and hardball tactics to navigate the social, political, and national security issues that converge with enforcing the law.
In addition to Falco, the series will also star Michael Chernus, Adelaide Clemens, David Fierro, Russell G. Jones, Olivia Lucy Phillip, and Joseph Lyle Taylor. Paul Attanasio, the creator of the current CBS series “Bull,” is the writer and executive producer on “Tommy.” Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Amblin Television will also executive produce. 'The Contender' movie hero: Joan Allen as the virtuous Sen. Laine Hanson. 'The Contender' movie: Exceptional Joan Allen in intriguing but ultimately wimpy political drama "Principles only mean anything when we stick by them when they're inconvenient," says Senator Laine Hanson, played by Joan Allen in Rod Lurie's The Contender. Senator Hanson should know. In Lurie's political drama, the poor Democratic senator is grilled by a Republican inquisitor with a bad hairdo (Gary Oldman) who wants to prevent at all costs her being confirmed as the next Vice President of the United States. Even if that means destroying Hanson's political career by making public the senator's alleged participation in an orgy during her college days.* Now, why such hatred? Well, the Republican watchdog is certain that the U.S. president (Jeff Bridges) has chosen Sen. Hanson because of her gender instead of her qualifications for the job. Adding insult to injury,...

The film stars Judd Hirsch, Ryan O'Nan (The Brooklyn Brothers Beat The Best), Jaime Ray Newman (Red Widow and Supernatural), C.S. Lee (Dexter), Caroline Lagerfelt (Gossip Girl), and Joseph Lyle Taylor. Dear L.A. Friends, The Red Robin, the film that I co-produced and worked for a few years on is having its U.S. Premiere tonight at the Hollywood Film Festival. The screening is at 7 and is at my favorite theater in town, the Arclight Hollywood.
The Red Robin was written and directed by Michael Z. Wechsler, who will be in attendance to introduce the film and do a Q & A afterwards with the cast. I believe that C.S. Lee of Dexter, as well as Caroline Lagerfelt of Gossip Girl, will be there as well. The film also stars Judd Hirsch (Taxi, Independence Day), Ryan O'Nan (The Brooklyn Brothers Beat The Best), Jaime Ray Newman (Red Widow, Supernatural), and Joseph Lyle Taylor (not sure who is coming from the rest of the cast).

Hi folks: I'm not usually one for blatant self-promotion, but a feature I co-produced and helped develop over a number of years is premiering at the Montreal World Film Festival in August, and I'm very proud of it so you're getting a post. It's called The Red Robin and stars Judd Hirsch (Taxi, Damages, Maron, Independence Day), C.S. Lee (Dexter), Ryan O'Nan (The Iceman, the Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best), Jaime Ray Newman (Red Widow, Supernatural), Caroline Lagerfelt (Gossip Girl), and Joseph Lyle Taylor. It was written and directed by an old friend and creative collaborator, Michael Z. Wechsler. The story is a psychological thriller which can be best be described as The Celebration meets The Manchurian Candidate, about a dying, famed psychiatrist (Hirsch), who also did mysterious work for the CIA during the Cold War. One of the most cinematically gorgeous independent films in a long time, “Dead Man’s Burden” (along with fellow 2012 indie “Beasts of the Southern Wild," shot on Super 16) truly makes the case for celluloid. While watching this meditative Western, one simply wants to drink in the beauty of the image, and yes, that image is created on 35 mm film. They don’t make Red cameras that can do what this film achieves in terms of sheer richness of image. In the age of digital everything, might independent film, at one time the dominion of digital, be the savior of celluloid? “Dead Man’s Burden” (the directorial debut of Jared Moshé) demonstrates just why film is important, simply by being beautiful. But beyond that, it’s also a moody, violent, classic, yet modern Western.
“Dead Man’s Burden” starts and ends with a bang, a sun-dappled young woman looking down the barrel of a long rifle.

The always lovable Judd Hirsch has done many things in his career since he was springboarded to stardom in the hit TV series "Taxi". Finally, though, he is getting to indulge his darker side ... which could spell very good things for genre fans.
According to Variety the producers of The Red Robin have tapped Hirsch, Ryan O'Nan, C.S. Lee, Jaime Ray Newman, Caroline Lagerfelt and Joseph Lyle Taylor to star in the psychological thriller.
Screenwriter Michael Z. Wechsler will direct and produce.
O'Nan, who starred in The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best, will play the adopted adult son of Hirsch's character -- a famed psychiatrist specializing in trauma who was rumored to have done some confidential work for the CIA during the Cold War. In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh is certainly shopping around for some interesting talent to fill the remaining lead slots in his Seven Psychopaths cast: he's just hired Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits and Olga Kurylenko for the comedy drama.
Psychopaths finds Bruges veteran Colin Farrell as Marty, a scriptwriter struggling with a brain-rotting case of writer's block. He's trying to finish the titular screenplay but he's lacking real inspiration.
He finds it when he gets mixed up in the dognapping antics of pals Billy (Sam Rockwell) and Hans (Christopher Walken). The trouble really starts when the beloved Shih Tzu belonging to a crazy gangster (Harrelson) goes missing. Soon, Marty has all the inspiration he could need. But he might not actually survive the incident.
While there's no word on who Waits or Kurylenko will play, McDonagh also has the likes of Ronnie Gene Blevins, Joseph Lyle Taylor and Kiran Deol aboard.

Chicago – What do Robert Duvall and Melissa Leo have in common? They both have won an Oscar and they both cashed a paycheck for the fake virtuous hack job called “Seven Days in Utopia.” For Duvall especially, maybe the mortgage payment is due on the vacation home.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
Utopia takes a unholy sport, golf, and tries to bless it with some sort of come-to-Jesus importance that ends up being embarrassing for all involved (again, especially Duvall). In a story that only could be invented in the mind of a feverish Christian golf addict, Utopia can only exist within that segment of the United States population who long for something this country has never had.
Luke Chisholm (Lucas Black) is a rising Texas golf pro who flakes out on the final hole of a Lone Star State golf tournament that he has well in hand. He takes some bad advice from his caddie,...

The film, about golfer Luke Chisholm and his detour to the small charming town of Utopia Texas, is more than your run of the mill golf movie. Based on the beloved sports novel by David L. Though the plot may come across at times as linear, following the player who almost lost it all but somehow finds himself and comes out on top, it has much more heart...

One of the most inspirational writers whose work I've enjoyed reading is Harvey Penick, a golf professional and coach from Austin, Texas. Penick began his golf career as a caddy at Austin Country Club, and went on to coach at the University of Texas from 1931 to 1963. He co-authored with Texas Film Hall of Fame member Bud Shrake Harvey Penick's Little Red Book. The "must-read" book contained insightful anecdotes that applied beyond the game of golf -- life lessons on mental focus as well as achieving goals.
Like Penick, Seven Days in Utopia -- opening Friday in Austin theaters -- employs a fictional character who serves up life and spiritual lessons through golf. Based upon Dr. David Cook's book Golf's Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia, this golf-related movie centers around two individuals who appear quite different at first: Johnny Crawford (Robert Duvall), an eccentric rancher with a...

Sports movies can be tricky beasts, and none moreso than the valiant, but generally in vain, effort that is the golf-related movie. Another shot at it comes your way September 2nd, and this one may have what it takes. The trailer looks solid at any rate, and the fact that it's based on David L. Cook's book, "Golf's Sacred Journey: Seven Days at the Links of Utopia," isn't going to hurt either.
Lucas Black and Robert Duvall are joined by a very solid cast, including Melissa Leo, to bring you a quirky golf film about one man's effort to "find his game," after he parts ways with his father. It may appear a little more syrupy than necessary, but I think it may be onto something, not least because it seems to be both more and less about golf than most of the, admittedly few, efforts in the genre.
