In 1986, Tom Cruise was on top of the world. Top Gun had come out and become the biggest movie of the year, minting him as a bonafide superstar. However, Cruise had bigger ambitions beyond being an action hero or heartthrob. He wanted to be a legitimate, respected actor; so before Top Gun ever hit theaters, he had already wrapped a role where he’d play opposite one of the biggest movies stars of all time – Paul Newman – whose career Cruise would likely want to emulate as the older actor was able to find the perfect balance between art and commerce, while never sacrificing his brand as a star. Their movie together – The Color of Money – would go on to be a highlight of both’s filmographies, and a notable gritty effort that paired them both, for the only time, with the great Martin Scorsese.

The Queen’s Gambit became one of Netflix’s biggest limited-series upon its release, so naturally, there was talk of a second season almost immediately. Anya Taylor-Joy, who starred in the series, got fans talking earlier today when she tweeted: “The Queen’s Gambit season 2,” but the post was taken down after ten minutes and the actress confirmed on Instagram that she had been hacked.
For those ten minutes, fans were excited about entering the world of chess once again, but it seems that The Queen’s Gambit won’t be returning for a second season. “My Twitter has been hacked,” Anya Taylor-Joy wrote on Instagram. “Apologies for all inconveniences. It’s not me!” Based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, The Queen’s Gambit followed Elizabeth Harmon, an orphaned chess prodigy who becomes an elite player while struggling with emotional problems, drugs, and alcohol dependency. Anya Taylor-Joy has confirmed her Twitter account was hacked in the wake of a cryptic post that touted a second season of her beloved Netflix limited series “The Queen’s Gambit.” Taylor-Joy, who has not posted on Twitter since November 2020, excited fans on the morning of Jan. 30 when she seemingly tweeted: “‘The Queen’s Gambit’ Season 2.” The post was up for around 10 minutes before it was taken down, but it was enough time to ignite rumors that Netflix was moving forward with a new season.
Not so fast. Taylor-Joy confirmed the Twitter hack on her Instagram story, where she wrote: “My Twitter has been hacked. Apologies for all inconveniences. It’s not me!” Sources close to the actor also confirmed to Variety there was no truth to the “The Queen’s Gambit” Season 2 tweet.

Si Litvinoff, the executive producer of Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell To Earth, died Dec. 26 in Los Angeles. He was 93.
His death was confirmed to Deadline by his friend Shade Rupe. A cause of death has not been announced.
Litvinoff was a practicing lawyer for more than a decade before pivoting to film production. He acquired the rights to the now-classic 1962 Anthony Burgess dystopian sci-fi novel A Clockwork Orange and developed the project with Burgess and writer Terry Southern. Litvinoff eventually recruited director Kubrick, who signed on as both producer and director.
The film, starring Malcolm McDowell as the leader of an “ultra-violence” gang in a futuristic Britain, was released by Warner Bros. in 1971 and would be nominated for four Oscars, including best picture, the following year.
Also in ’71, Litvinoff produced the drama Walkabout, set in the Australian Outback and directed by Roeg.

Lance Henriksen is one of the few actors besides Sigourney Weaver whose character lived to return for another installment in the "Alien" franchise. Ridley Scott's first "Alien" movie taught audiences and space survivor Ripley, played by Weaver, not to trust androids. Then, James Cameron's sequel, "Aliens," subverted that by introducing Henriksen's android Bishop, and casting doubt on his motives through Ripley, only to show that he was actually a trustworthy and loyal ally.
That's not to say Bishop would necessarily favor humans over aliens as an intrinsically better-natured life form. In a 1987 interview with "Starlog" magazine (via Strange Shapes), Henriksen said, "I told Jim [Cameron], 'Anything that's really organically alive is fascinating to Bishop. There's no good or evil -- just this ultimate respect for anything living.'"
Henriksen also mentioned consulting books like "Mockingbird" by Walter Tevis for his "Aliens" role. "There's a bit in ['Mockingbird'] where the...

David Bowie, the subject of Brett Morgen’s new documentary Moonage Daydream (in theaters and on Imax screens Sept. 16), appeared in 12 scripted movies — everything from the high-minded (1983’s Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, from Japanese New Wave director Nagisa Ôshima) to the lowbrow (2001’s Zoolander, in which he judges a runway walk-off). But for many fans, his most successful big-screen outing was his first.
Based on the 1963 sci-fi novel by Walter Tevis (whose books The Hustler and The Queen’s Gambit were also adapted to great success), 1976’s The Man Who Fell to Earth tells the story of an extraterrestrial whose planet has been stricken by drought. Bowie was 28 and coasting on the success of his otherworldly Ziggy Stardust persona when he was selected by director Nicolas Roeg, who’d cast another rock star, Mick Jagger, in 1970’s Performance. If you were woken up by a massive clatter this morning and it isn’t bin day, it was likely the sound of over 8,000 hours of television and films being tipped into the internet for the UK launch of new streaming service Paramount+. That equates to roughly a year of non-stop viewing with no loo or snack breaks, and impressively, only 4,000 hours of that is made up by Paw Patrol. Correction: as any parent will tell you, Paw Patrol just feels like it lasts 4,000 hours. It’s probably about half that.
Stop talking about Paw Patrol, you’re distracting me. Paramount+ is the new UK streaming home of the Star Trek universe, including the pre-2009 films and all of the TV incarnations from The Original Series to recent prequel Strange New Worlds, and including season four of Discovery, which UK fans previously had to track down on Pluto TV when...

“The truth is that that story is timeless. You don’t want it to be timeless, but it is,” declares co-creator Alex Kurtzman about why it seemed like the right time to revisit this story on Showtime’s limited series “The Man Who Fell to Earth.”

The movie is a little impenetrable, it really is for proper movie buffs, but I was blown away by David Bowie’s performance.” Watch our full interview with Harris above.

“I really believe that music is the heart of the narrative,” declares Emmy-winning composer Jeff Russo about the power of a great film or TV score. “It’s our responsibility to be the undercurrent to what the feeling of the story is; whether that feeling is love, hate, tension, anxiety. Any one of those feelings that the characters get to feel during the story should be underscored by us and brought out to a certain degree,” he says about the composer’s primary role. “Part of what I think a composer’s job is as well is to figure out where to not put music, not necessarily always where to put music, because a lot of times, the absence of music can also evoke certain feelings.”

On this episode of Deadline’s Scene 2 Scene Podcast, I talk with Oscar nominated actors Chiewtel Ejiofor and Naomie Harris about the Showtime sci-fi series, The Man Who Fell To Earth. In tune with the theme of the show, the three of us share our their experiences with otherness (which is defined as the quality or fact of being different.), and being an outsider.
Co-written and executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet, The Man Who Fell To Earth follows a new alien character Faraday, (Ejiofor), who arrives on Earth looking for quantum physics scientist Justin Falls (Harris) while human evolution is at a turning point. With the mission to save his home planet, Faraday must confront his own past to determine Earth’s future.

“I had seen the David Bowie film and I loved it,” says Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of Showtime’s sci-fi drama “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” which is based on the 1976 Bowie film. “I had seen it when I was a kid so there were certain things that went over my head. I thought it was beautiful and brilliant, but it was strange and kind of wild. What I took away from it on that first viewing was this iconic center of this extraordinary performance and persona that David Bowie had.” Watch our full interview with Ejiofor above.

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in The Man Who Fell to Earth, a new take on the iconic 1976 film starring David Bowie (based on a novel by Walter Tevis). In Showtime‘s adventure drama, he plays the title character, Faraday, an alien who comes to Earth on a mission to get water for his dying planet. The brave, determined Faraday gets a rocky start after crashing in the New Mexico desert (watching him try to communicate with the police and other humans is by turns terrifying and comic) but Ejiofor tells us, “Slowly but surely he discovers some of the amazing qualities that human beings have. Some of the remarkable and gentle and special and loving qualities. That kind of gives him the impetus to continue his mission and to understand that humanity is really, truly worth saving.” He first learns those lessons from the one human he’s been instructed to track down,...

Since it was first published in 1976 by author Walter Tevis, “The Man Who Fell to Earth” has always been a cautionary sci-fi tale about Earth’s dwindling resources and humanity’s distraction by media and vice. This is true of the 1976 Nicolas Roeg feature film adaptation starring David Bowie, and also of the new Showtime series which expands on the original story of the alien who comes to Earth in search of water for his dying planet. In the original narrative, Thomas Joseph Newton is from the planet Anthea and uses his advanced technology to create several inventions making him the richest man on Earth. The new series, created by showrunner and co-executive producer Alex Kurtzman (“Star Trek: Discovery”) and co-executive producer and writer Jenny Lumet (“Clarice”), take us on a similar journey.

If you were looking for a David Bowie-influenced cash grab, you've come to the wrong place. Showtime has released a five minute snippet of their upcoming adaptation of "The Man Who Fell To Earth," and while Bowie may have dazzled as a yearning, misunderstood alien who is desperately trying to save his home planet in the 1976 movie adaptation, the Showtime series seems to strike a decidedly different tone. Both versions are based on a novel of the same name by sci-fi author Walter Tevis, which is a little fantastical and a lot melancholy. While we can't say for sure what joys/horrors this latest...

Showtime offers the next step to the universe of The Man Who Fell To Earth with its upcoming series of the same name starring Chiwetel Ejofor and Naomie Harris. While not a remake Nicolas Roeg’s 1976 film starring David Bowie series, executive producer, writer and director Alex Kurtzman said the series seeks to pay tribute to previous forms of the sci-fi story.
“I think it’s amazing and it’s beautiful that Walter Teviis is having is moment right now. I wish he had more of it when he was alive so he could appreciate how much people appreciate his work,” Kurtman said of the novelist, who also penned The Queen’s Gambit. I think we felt a tremendous debt to honor the legacy of David Bowie, of Walter Tevis and Nicolas Roeg – of all the people who built these extraordinary stories because they clearly wrenched their hearts open to tell them.
