Thomson plans bid for Bell Globemedia
TORONTO -- Canadian billionaire Kenneth Thomson has bid CAN$1.5 billion ($1.25 billion) for Bell Globemedia, which comprises CTV Inc., Canada's top-rated TV network, and the Globe and Mail national newspaper, the National Post reported Monday. A spokesman for Bell Globemedia had no comment on the newspaper report, which indicated Thomson's investment vehicle, Woodbridge Co., was looking to acquire the 68.5% stake in Bell Globemedia from phone giant BCE Inc. that it did not already own. Woodbridge apparently made the CAN$1.5 billion offer to BCE months ago and has yet to receive an answer, the National Post reported. Besides CTV's 21 station affiliates nationwide, Bell Globemedia's other TV assets include The Sports Network, a national sports channel, its French-language counterpart Le Reseau des sports, CTV Newsnet, a headline news channel, Discovery Channel Canada, and Outdoor Life Network Canada.
