Netflix’s latest Thai Crime Drama is about a group of teenagers caught up in a vicious web of lies when they decide to make money off of organized religion, the biggest business in the world. The scriptures from every faith talk about the consequences of greed. In Buddhism, as well, greed is an evil which leads to the suffering of mankind. Drawing parallels with the principles of Buddhist spirituality, The Believers shows how greed leads the protagonists into problems that they never even would’ve come across in the first place.
Part of the reason I have developed disdain for the capitalist system is because it always sweeps people into this whirlwind of endless greed. We can call it human nature, yes, but again, a market system incentivised by dopamine-rich end results in exchange for blood can only lead to further corruption of the human mind. In this system,...

The Tamil-language series Label is a gory portrayal of the gangster saga of North Chennai. Director Anuraja Kamaraja brings style and substance to a show that raises a very important issue: that of your roots and the identity one gets from them. The series revolves around a lawyer named Prabhakaran, who was once wrongfully implicated in a murder case while he was a juvenile. Years later, he studied hard to become an excellent lawyer who focused especially on bringing justice to those who were being wrongfully persecuted. Meanwhile, he was also trying to improve the image of the region he hails from—a grim area of North Chennai known as Vaali Nagar, where juveniles were groomed by two rival gangs, a practice rampant in the present day as well; all this in exchange for a tag, otherwise called the Label.

Netflix has hit the jackpot with Kohrra, the brand-new crime investigation drama set in rural Punjab. The arresting nature of the narrative, brought to life by some great performances, makes the show a must-watch. Some of the best writing, direction, and cinematography of this year can be seen in the six episodic series by Diggi Sisodia, Gunjit Chopra, and Sudip Sharma. The climax of Kohrra happens to be an emotional roller coaster that leaves the audience with a lump in their throat and a heavy heart.

You probably don’t have a heart if you don’t feel an iota of anything after watching Thandatti, which is helmed by Ram Sangaiah and has an arresting Pasupathy leading the cast. Primarily a mystery drama, the movie keeps oscillating between various genres like a pendulum, which makes the viewing experience quite jarring. It is understandable that Sangaiah was trying to cater to a broad audience, but the main story he had in hand probably didn’t need such erratic treatment. In fact, for most of the second half, Thandatti feels quite exhausting to sit through. However, the final twist makes the experience mostly worthwhile. If only the treatment had been a bit more serious and straightforward without all the unnecessary comedic fluff, the ending would have been way more effective and evocative.

Kohrra, the new Netflix Original by Sudip Sharma, is, on the surface, about a murder investigation and how the Punjab Police is under tremendous pressure to track down the culprit. If you look at it from close quarters, it is about family dynamics and the lack of understanding between the parents and their kids. Under the garb of an investigative drama, the makers and the writers take the audience through the lives of the rich and the middle class families and all the while, slowly and steadily, uncomfortable truths come out. In this town topics such as equality and feminism have not reached the locals; it is always lived experience that makes individuals grow as human beings.
Kohrra is filled with parent figures who are unable to come to terms with the fact that their kids are individuals, they are allowed to have an opinion, and they intend to live on their terms.

We all must admit that well-made murder investigation stories will always blow your mind. If packaged and delivered properly, it is an ideal way to spend an afternoon understanding the nuances of a case and what goes on behind the scenes. Lately, there have been plenty of tales in this genre from various regions of the country, which helps the audience understand the local police and the native culture in depth. We have had Disney’s Kerala Crime Files and Shaitan, Amazon’s Suzhal: The Vortex, and Netflix’s Delhi Crime take the audience down roads that were seldom chosen by filmmakers in the past. The new Netflix original Kohrra, created by Gunjit Chopra and Diggi Sisodia and co-created by Sudip Sharma of Paatal Lok fame, brings you the story of a murder that shakes up a small town, putting the police under constant pressure ever since to catch the culprit.
