The Cast Of Brendan Fraser's 1999 Action Movie Classic Reunites 26 Years Later In New Photos
Image
After almost three decades, Brendan Fraser has reunited with his former co-stars from his over $400 million blockbuster hit. As a recent Oscar winner whose career has seen a major resurgence following his Academy Award for Best Actor in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale in 2023, Fraser hasn’t lost sight of the roles that made him a star to begin with.

The Mummy signalled Fraser’s true breakout success as a leading man, following earlier appearances in films like Encino Man and George of the Jungle. As the beginning of a major franchise that remade a 1932 classic, Fraser reprised his role as Rick O’Connell in the sequels The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Brendan Fraser Decodes Why Tom Cruise’s ‘The Mummy’ Failed Ahead of 2026 Reboot
Image
Brendan Fraser has finally spoken out about why Tom Cruise’s The Mummy crashed and burned, and it’s just in time because a brand new reboot is on the way with Lee Cronin at its helm. We still remember Fraser’s 1999 classic fondly because it was such a thrilling adventure.

But the 2017 reboot featuring Cruise was widely considered an infamous misfire. So, now as we gear up for the next chapter, it’s worth digging into why Fraser’s movie worked while the Top Gun star’s didn’t, and what the upcoming version is promising to bring us.

Brendan Fraser Weighs In On Why Tom Cruise’s The Mummy Flopped Tom Cruise in The Mummy (2017) | Credits: Universal Pictures

During a panel moderated by Collider, Brendan Fraser reunited with The Mummy cast members like John Hannah, Patricia Velasquez, and Oded Fehr. But during the nostalgic get-together, the infamous 2017 reboot...

Brendan Fraser Explains Why Tom Cruise's 'The Mummy' Remake Failed
Image
If someone asked you to name a movie about the classic Universal monster The Mummy, then chances are thoughts would instantly turn to Brendan Fraser’s much-loved combination of Indiana Jones and…well, more Indiana Jones. The 1999 action adventure with a touch of horror is still one of the most successful movies to feature the ancient Egyptian creature, and that means Fraser is best positioned to share his view on why Tom Cruise’s 2017 version didn’t just create a box office bomb, but killed the franchise it was supposed to kick off.

Fraser reunited with the cast of The Mummy at Fan Expo Denver (via Collider), sharing the stage with John Hannah, Patricia Velasquez, and Oded Fehr. It wouldn’t be a Mummy discussion, though, if someone didn’t turn the conversation to Cruise’s big-budget box office disaster of a movie. When asked whether there were ever plans...

'The Mummy's Brendan Fraser Explains Why Tom Cruise’s 15% Rotten Tomatoes Reboot Failed [Exclusive]
Image
Before The Mummy launched the Dark Universe into a coffin-sized crater at the box office, it was Brendan Fraser’s swashbuckling 1999 version that had fans clinging to their seats — and loving every second of it. At Fan Expo Denver, The Mummy cast — Fraser, John Hannah, Patricia Velasquez, and Oded Fehr — reunited on stage, moderated by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, to look back at the franchise’s enduring appeal. Naturally, the conversation turned to Universal’s failed attempt to build a cinematic monster universe with The Mummy (2017), Dr. Jekyll, The Invisible Man(almost), and…well, that’s about it.

When asked if any sort of crossover was ever on the table during their era — possibly even one with Hugh Jackman’sVan Helsing — Fraser made it clear that whatever the ambitions of the newer version were, they didn’t quite understand the assignment. “I really don’t know. I know Tom Cruise...

New Mummy Movie From Evil Dead Rise Director Announced By Blumhouse
Image
A little over seven years after the last attempt to reboot the property failed, Blumhouse have revealed they're working on a new Mummy movie. The horror franchise first launched in 1932 and was part of the Universal Classic Monsters collection, with Boris Karloff portraying the titular entity before passing the reins on to Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. The years since have seen two rebooted versions of The Mummy franchise, beginning with the Brendan Fraser-led movies from Stephen Sommers, which also included the Scorpion King spinoffs, and Tom Cruise's failed 2017 reboot meant to launch the interconnected Dark Universe.

The official Blumhouse Twitter page have unveiled that a new Mummy movie is in the works from writer/director Lee Cronin, who recently excelled with Evil Dead Rise. The post features a script page with the title scratched out featuring Cronin's credit with "Original Screenplay by" and both...

Conjuring Movies & Spinoffs Ranked, Worst To Best
Image
The Conjuring franchise has rejuvenated the paranormal horror genre, with nine movies in total, including sequels and spinoffs. The spinoffs, such as Annabelle and The Nun, played a significant role in propelling the franchise to its current success, but they and their sequels struggle to match the original two The Conjuring movies at certain points. While some entries in the franchise, like The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, are highly praised for their effective horror and storytelling, others, such as The Curse of La Llorona, fall short in execution but still provide an enjoyable viewing experience.

From James Wan's original The Conjuring to The Nun 2, the ConjurVerse has been rejuvenating the paranormal horror genre. There have been nine Conjuring movies so far: two direct sequels, three spinoffs, and three spin-off sequels. The first original movie, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren,...

How The Mummy Almost Didn't Get Made
Image
The Mummy's 1999 reimagining faced development hell, including dark and violent takes from various directors like George Romero and Clive Barker. Stephen Sommers eventually got the green light with an 18-page pitch, creating a leaner, faster, scarier action-adventure film with a romantic twist. The treacherous shoot in Marrakech, Morocco, involved snakes, sandstorms, and deadly bites, leading to health hazards and dehydration for the cast and crew.

It has been 25 years since Universal Pictures reimagined one of their big movie monsters as an Indiana Jones-inspired adventure tale. 1999's The Mummy wasn't a conventional take on the 1932 film of the same name, but its fresh spin resonated with viewers looking for a fun time at the movies. It was a mix of old-school sensibilities, a dash of horror, a heroic lead, and a stellar ensemble cast that allowed The Mummy to overcome mixed reviews and become one of the biggest hits of the year.

The Mummy is the Last Great Adventure Film of the 20th Century and Brendan Fraser's Best Film
Image
Stephen Sommers' The Mummy (1999) begins in 1290 BC. Courtesy of Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr), voiceover sets the scene: "Thebes, City of the Living. Crown jewel of Pharaoh Seti I. Home of Imhotep, Pharaoh's high priest, keeper of the dead; birthplace of Anck-su-Namun, Pharaoh's mistress." As it turns out, Anck-su-Namun (Patricia Velasquez) is also the object of affection of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) -- which is strictly verboten. A smudge in the mistress' gold body paint tells the Pharaoh that Anck-su-Namun has been tarnished. Moments later, Imhotep and Anck-su-Nanum kill the Pharoah. Imhotep absconds into the night, promising to resurrect Anck-su-Namun as she stays to face the wrath of the guards, the Medjai.

Later, in Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead -- where most of The Mummy's action will occur -- Imhotep and his loyal subjects, fanatical cultists who worship the Book of the Dead, attempt to revivify Anck-Su-Namun. But the Medjai,...

The Curse Of La Llorona: The Box Office Hit The Conjuring Universe Didn't Want
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"You can't count it!" That's what producer Peter Safran said to Entertainment Weekly in 2023 about "The Curse of La Llorona" being part of The Conjuring Universe. Safran, who has helped to spearhead the very successful horror franchise alongside James Wan since 2013, did not leave any room for interpretation there. Yet, director Michael Chaves' successful 2019 feature directorial debut contains characters from "Conjuring" films, as well as overt references to events in those stories. Be that as it may, this movie now exists as both an unquestionable hit and a film that narratively exists in The Conjuring Universe but, for technical reasons, actually doesn't.

In the era of cinematic universes, it's an almost unprecedented situation. Why provide connective tissue if the plan isn't to connect these dots?...

Satanic Hispanics Review
Image
The best horror anthologies are more than just haphazard collections of short films mashed together to reach feature length. Movies with a unifying theme or filmmaking style are more successful at holding the audience's interest, and the Latino-driven anthology Satanic Hispanics makes its unique focus clear. There are still some slightly jarring tonal shifts between the individual segments, which range from heavy and intense to lighthearted and silly, and the framing story doesn't hold them together as well as it should, but, as an entertaining showcase for a group of underappreciated Latino horror filmmakers, Satanic Hispanics accomplishes its goal.

Most of the filmmakers involved with Satanic Hispanics are veterans of other horror anthologies, including Tales of Halloween and the V/H/S and ABCs of Death movies, and they clearly understand how to deliver a compact horror tale that fits within a larger framework. The framing story is often the weakest part of these anthologies,...

Stories about Latin American legends.”

Was The Mummy's Anuk-Sun-Amun A Real Person?
Image
In 1999's The Mummy, Egyptian concubine Anck-su-namun (Patricia Velasquez) plays a key role as a character motivation for the villain, Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), but it is unclear whether she was a real person in Ancient Egypt. Imhotep's curse wreaks havoc in The Mummy as he sets out to resurrect Anck-su-namun, as they were lovers during their lifetimes. Just like Imhotep, her character is based on real Egyptian history, but not in the way the movie makes it out to be.

In reality, Anck-su-namun was an Egyptian princess, not a concubine. Named Ankhesenamun, she was the daughter of Pharaoh Ankhenaten and Queen Nefertiti, and later married Pharaoh Tutankhamun. Unlike Anck-su-namun in The Mummy, she lived in the mid-1300s Bce, while Imhotep lived in the 27th century Bce. So even though she was real, she never would have been able to meet Imhotep, let alone fall in love with him.

Was The Mummy's Seti A Real Person?
Image
1999's The Mummy contains many exciting adaptations of Egyptian history, culture, and mythology, but its portrayal of a lesser-known character Seti I - the pharaoh whose assassination sets the film's events in motion - is one of the most interesting. The popular action-adventure tale follows librarian and passionate Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her brother Jonathan (John Hannah) in their search for Hamunaptra, the fictional city of the dead. Recruiting adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) along the way, they manage to locate the city, only to accidentally unleash a deadly curse and resurrect an ancient evil.

While it primarily takes place in 1920s Egypt, The Mummy opens in 1290 BC Thebes, in the prosperous reign of Pharaoh Seti I. When Seti (Aharon Ipalé) discovers an affair between his high priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) and mistress Anck-su-namun (Patricia Velásquez), Imhotep brutally murders him before the Medjai - the pharaohs' personal bodyguards - can prevent the act.

More than a decade in the making, the film follows a groundbreaking clinical trial that peels back the headlines to show the sweat, passion and sacrifice behind every breakthrough cure. Exclusive: Deadline has an exclusive clip from the feature doc Since I Been Down, which is set for release on VOD on May 24th.

The film from director Gilda Sheppard stakes us to Tacoma, Washington. Influenced by the national drug war frenzy and the fear-based culture of punishment in the 1980s and ’90s, Tacoma sacrificed its most vulnerable children to a life behind bars. These children, who are now adults, cannot be silenced. As we hear them tell their stories, bravely, unapologetically, we realize: This is the story of ‘Everytown USA’.

June Nho Ivers, Saman Maydani and Bonnie Benjamin-Phariss produced the doc, with Sheppard and David Menschel serving as executive producers. Our exclusive clip from the film can be found below.

Hallie and Audrey McPherson will be bringing their dramedy Earthquake Country to Dances With Films on Saturday, June 18th at 7:15 p.m. Pst.

The film written and directed by The McPherson Sisters centers on Rhyme Osbourne (Lydian Blossom), who is fed up with her mother’s alcoholism and delusions of grandeur and her father’s literal inability to get off the couch. On her eighteenth birthday, Rhyme puts into motion a plan that will cut ties with her family—for good. Set in 2007 in the seemingly idyllic Ojai, CA, the film is a coming-of-age story that explores the creation of family mythology, the malleability of memory, and the sometimes suffocating intimacy of the nuclear family.

Deborah Marks-Bertling, Alex Sorian Brown, Todd Caroll, Nigel Vonas, Melina Emilie, Madison Widener and Kyle Hester also star. Pic was produced by the McPhersons and Melina Hayum.

Filmmaker Alex Proyas‘ production outfit Heretic Foundation and development company Mystery Clock Cinema this week announced a co-production/financing partnership with the UK-based 108 Media, which has launched worldwide sales and packaging on his latest feature, the horror Sister Darkness.

The female-driven film marking the first of several forthcoming collaborations between the parties is set in the UK in the 1930s—at a time when women were marginalized and exploited. It follows the newly-wed but unhappy Alice as she stumbles across her doppelgänger Isla, whose existence is a mystery seeped in a tale of bloody retribution against her oppressors, the hellish supernatural nightscape, and a dread uprising against the deceitful aristocracy. Pic will go before camera in Australia later this year.

Proyas negotiated his multi-faceted deal with 108 Media’s CEO Abhi Rastogi and President (Production) Justin Deimen, with support from Rod Smith and Steven Rosser (Legal Counsel), General Manager & Executive Producer Andrew Robinson, Studio Producer Erasmo (Raz) Raimundo, and Craig Emmanuel of Paul Hastings in Los Angeles.

Written and directed by Eve Symington, Brut Force is a modern female-led film that is very much trying to capture the spirit of classic film noir and present it in a new way for a modern audience. Symington and her Dp Emilie Silvestri also do something remarkable – they manage to create a wonderful dichotomy between the noir elements of the film and the sun-soaked world of California’s wine country, the beautiful landscape bathed in golden sunshine hiding a dark world in its shadowy underbelly.

The follows newly-fired reporter Sloane Sawyer (Lelia Symington), who hears that someone has been harassing vineyard workers in her hometown, so she starts investigating. When haunting beauty Dulce goes missing and the alluring Tico Reyes shows up looking for her,...

Q&a with Destination Marfa Producer & Co-Star Stelio Savante
Image
With Destination Marfa now on DVD and digital services, I had the opportunity to catch up with producer and co-star Stelio Savante to learn about how he got involved with the film, his favorite on set memories, working with Tony Todd, and more!

How did you get involved with Destination Marfa as a producer and one of the film's co-stars?

The project kept coming across my radar where it no longer felt coincidental. Often these projects and roles serendipitously chase you. It literally felt like a case of pronoia to me. So I reached out to Andy, we had a solid initial conversation and he sent me the script. At that point the hitchhiker role (Vincent) was still up for being retold and it fell into place very naturally. As a producer, I wanted to help Andy’s vision become fully realized and I reached out and brought in a...

‘The Curse of La Llorona’ Review – Second Opinion
Stars: Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, Patricia Velasquez, Marisol Ramirez, Sean Patrick Thomas, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, Roman Christou | Written by Mikki Daughtry, Tobias Iaconis | Directed by Michael Chaves

The Curse of La Llorona is directed by James Wan protege Michael Chaves and stands as the directors’ penultimate test, as he has been chosen – specifically by Wan himself – to finish up what he started in the third, and supposedly final, entry in the Warner Brothers The Conjuring franchise.

The Curse of La Llorona is sadly a surface level horror with a few mildly interesting scares but unfortunately poorly explores the rich Mexican culture on screen in an insufficient and almost cheap manner. The camera work is suitable and fitting throughout with a similar aesthetic utilised by Wan in his Conjuring pictures, with the use of space on the screen undeniably something to admire. The wide lenses utilised by cinematographer Michael Burgess and director...

The Curse of La Llorona Reaches Toward a Global Audience
Nick Morgulis Apr 18, 2019

We speak with the filmmakers and actors who considered it their sacred duty to do honor by La Llorona... the very real ghost.

The story of La Llorna, the weeping woman, is well-known in Mexico. Details, such as the color of her dress or the exact date of her death, might change depending on geography and teller, but the basic folklore remains the same: There once was a woman who drowned her children in a fit of grief and jealousy. Afterward she committed suicide but was damned to wander the world looking for other children. Yours, perhaps, if they were disobedient. If so, they too would breathe water. Such is The Curse of La Llorona, and such is the context of the new horror movie that is set in the ever expanding The Conjuring universe.

Last month at SXSW we were able to sit down with director...

The Curse of La Llorona Review
The Curse of La Llorona might be set in the Conjuring universe, but rest assured this whitewashed fare is no The Conjuring.

Do you remember the first time as a child you got frightened by a nightmare? Or maybe the hundredth? It’s a common experience for most humans, just as it is for the parents who have to calm them down. Which is one of the many reasons you’re left to wonder if the characters in The Curse of La Llorona are in fact that... human? They may look like you and I, and they might be played by members of the homo genus class, but don’t let looks deceive you. These blank automatons behave with about as much humanity as Hal 3000 on a short circuit—stony faced cattle who as children keep their literal ghost-inflicted scars to themselves, never mind the knowledge they’re being stalked by a crazy,...
