As a lover of all things Christmas, and therefore Christmas horror, I’ve always thought there could be a decent genre film based on the advent calendar. And indeed a movie came out just a couple of years ago called exactly that – The Advent Calendar – which was pretty good. This year, though comes Advent, with a slightly different tale to tell.
This one involves a ‘Krampus Calendar’. Something I didn’t know existed, and I assume is made up for the movie but at least it’s an original concept of sorts. It runs very similar to an Advent, where the character opens up a different door for each day in December. Only behind each door is a ‘task’. Tasks that seem to get more dangerous as the month goes on.

How To Kill Monsters in Theaters & Digital 12/6 from Dark Sky Films: "Jamie Lancaster is the sole survivor of a blood-drenched massacre at a remote cabin. Claiming that her friends were torn apart by a horrific monster summoned by a ritual gone wrong, she is arrested by the local cops and locked up for a crime she didn't commit.
We soon discover that Jamie’s claims of innocence are all too real when the entire police station is ripped from our reality and thrown into a nightmarish dimension of Lovecraftian monsters hungry for human flesh. Jamie must team up with a bunch of rookie cops and lawbreakers to hack and slash their way through an army of monsters and find a way to get back home before it’s too late!"

Get ready for a holiday experience like no other, as Advent, the latest festive horror from director Airell Anthony Hayles, is set to make your Christmas countdown more terrifying than merry. Following its much-anticipated World Premiere at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest Halloween, Advent will be available on digital platforms from 25 November, courtesy of Miracle Media.
Advent is not your typical holiday tale. With a dark twist inspired by the disturbing true events surrounding the infamous Blue Whale Challenge—a viral social media “game” that coerced participants into completing increasingly dangerous tasks—this film adds a supernatural edge to an already sinister premise. Hayles takes the idea of a deadly game and wraps it around the festive tradition of the advent calendar, transforming it into a harrowing thriller.
The film stars a strong cast, including Mark Arnold (Blade Runner 2049), Nicholas Vince, Cory Peterson (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Rasina Pavlova,...

Back in 1986, Caroline Williams played one of my all-time favorite horror final girls, “Stretch” in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Translating a stage show into a film is a tricky endeavour. There’s a good bit of justification for it in this case – Nicholas Vince’s work has strong niche appeal and far more people will be able to access it in recorded form than could ever hope to attend in person – but it takes effort to keep it interesting. Vince, however, has some experience with this kind of thing, and doing it himself means that he is able to build up the camera movements to complement his tried and tested approach to moving around onstage. This is combined with clips of video to create something which, though not exactly dynamic, offers enough visual interest to keep film fans engaged whilst he draws them in with his words.

Stewart Sparke is no newbie when it comes to giant rubber monsters and bucketfuls of goo. With two big silly indie creature features already under his belt in past FrightFest favourites The Creature Below and Book of Monsters, you’d think he’d be tiring of this sort of thing by now. Ready to shift gears into a much cleaner romantic comedy, or something that doesn’t involve having to scoop coagulated brain juice out of your work shoes every evening. But with this third effort, he confirms what we probably already knew; not only is Sparke the king of this very specific brand of lovingly batshit micro budget crowd-pleasers, neither he nor his team are going anywhere either. They’re simply having too much fun.
A sort of spiritual sequel to 2018’s Book of Monsters, How To Kill Monsters is another naturally funny, adoringly made stab at the old-school genre nuts-and-bolts.

Many genre figures have had biographical films done about them, Boris Karloff, Kane Hodder, and Robert Englund just to name a few. But I Am Monsters! is a little different from the rest. It’s a filmed adaptation of the autobiographical one-man show of the same name by Nicholas Vince.
For those for whom the name doesn’t ring a bell, Vince played Chatterer in Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II. That was the start of a long string of films that include another of Clive Barker’s films, Nightbreed, as well as films as diverse as The Black Gloves, They’re Outside and Fuck You Immortality. Coincidentally, his most recent film, How to Kill Monsters, also made its debut at this year’s FrightFest.

To find out what they had to say about it, check out the video embedded above!
Written and directed by Clive Barker (based on his own novella The Hellbound Heart), Hellraiser has the following synopsis: Sexual deviant Frank inadvertently opens a portal to hell when he tinkers with a box he bought while abroad. The act unleashes gruesome beings called Cenobites, who tear Frank’s body apart. When Frank’s brother and his wife, Julia, move into Frank’s old house, they accidentally bring what is left of Frank back to life. Frank then convinces Julia,...

It’s time for a new episode of the Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? video series, and with this one we’re going back to 1987 to examine how Clive Barker turned his novella The Hellbound Heart into the horror classic Hellraiser (watch it Here) – and spawned a huge franchise in the process. To hear all about the changes The Hellbound Heart went through on the way to becoming Hellraiser, check out the video embedded above!

If filmmaking is a puzzle, casting is a corner piece that, when chosen correctly, helps hold everything together. I recently told you about Coil’s Hellraiser soundtrack that almost was, but what about the cast? Clive Barker captured lightning in a bottle with his 1987 directorial debut, but here are some casting choices that could have impacted Hellraiser significantly.
Doug Bradley as Mover
Barker has known Doug Bradley since high school, so he allowed him his choice between two roles in Hellraiser: the Lead Cenobite or one of the mattress movers. As this was his first film, Bradley nearly chose to play the mover, because he thought it was important for the audience to see his face.
Thankfully, Bradley decided on the Lead Cenobite, and the rest is history. He became a horror icon, reprising the role in the next seven sequels, while Dave Atkins and Oliver Parker (who went on...

Clive Barker's novella "The Hellbound Heart," first published in 1986, tells the story of a man named Frank who has experienced everything he feels he can sexually. In seeking a more intense experience, he turns to a mystical puzzle box, said to offer the ultimate sensual pleasure. In solving it, Frank summons a group of beings called Cenobites. "Cenobite" is simply a word for someone who belongs to a monastery. The Cenobites have patches of skin skillfully sliced off their bodies, and are all mutilated to the point of not looking human. They bleed. They are in constant pain.
The lead Cenobite, described as being androgynous, with a feminine voice and elaborate nails decorating their bare head and face, explains that they have reached a level of physical experience beyond sensory overload, and their extreme version of sadomasochism has taught them that pain and pleasure are indivisible. The Cenobites drag...

Hulu has announced that its reimagining of the 1987 horror classic Hellraiser will debut exclusively on the streamer in the U.S., as part of its annual “Huluween” celebration of fright-filled content, on October 7.
The original film, which introduced horror fans to the iconic monster known as Pinhead, watches as a woman comes upon the newly resurrected, partially formed body of her brother-in-law. She then starts killing for him to revitalize his body, so that he can escape the demonic beings that have been pursuing him after he himself made his way out of their sadistic underworld. Clive Barker directed the pic from his own script, which was itself based on his 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, with Clare Higgins, Ashley Laurence, Andrew Robinson, Sean Chapman, Robert Hines, Doug Bradley, Nicholas Vince, Simon Bamford, Grace Kirby and Oliver Smith starring.

Ahead of Horror Channel’s UK TV Premiere of Book of Monsters, on May 14, director Stewart Sparke talks about the influence of horror fans, his obsession with the Alien franchise and collaborating with horror icon Nicholas Vince.
Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be a film director?
I remember first realising that I wanted to make films during one of many viewings of ‘The Mummy’ (1999) on VHS in my bedroom on an old 15” TV. I became quite obsessed with the film and tried to make all my friends come over to watch it because I wanted to share all the amazing trivia about how they made the special effects. This sparked the idea that perhaps I could make my own films and so my first effort was to remake the entirety of the Phantom Menace in my bedroom with myself and my friends miming along...

Airell Anthony Hayles, who penned and co-directed They’re Outside, is back in the writers chair again with Heckle – a film which channels Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy by way of 80s slasher movie; an odd combination on paper but one that on-screen works remarkably well.
Opening with the death of comic Ray Kelly (a cameoing Steve Guttenberg), shown in the opener and throughout flashbacks to be a total unlikeable bastard, Heckle tells the story of another unlikeable bastard and stand-up comic, Joe Johnson, who’s at the top of his stand-up comic game, so much so that he’s tapped to play Ray Kelly in a movie of his life… and death.

Brit horror Paintball Massacre sees a bunch of old school friends go on a paintball trip miles away from civilization. Things go horribly wrong when they discover that not only are their old school “friends” playing the game but also a cold-blooded masked killer…
High school reunions in movies never go right do they? Be it comedy or horror, school reunions tend to feature people harbouring unforgiven betrayals, long-standing hatreds, and stir up emotions that many have buried deep, forgetting the traumas of school life until they come face to face with people long-since forgotten. Its even worse when one of the class mates has turned into a total psychopath and want to take hatred of their school “friends” to a whole new level.

As I’ve said a million times before (well it feels that often) I dislike found footage films. I often think that the use of the format is a shortcut to create horror – in particular jump scares, cut corners in terms of filming quality and, with that, storytelling. However last years Death of a Vlogger managed to do new things with the format, bringing in the facets and tropes of vlogging, YouTube videos and live-streaming to create a truly modern, cutting edge take on a film format that has, frankly, been played out in the 20 years since The Blair With Project hit it big.

For We Are Many is a film from the Scottish-based Hex Studios, a smorgasbord of demonic horror from thirteen different genre directors that stars some familiar faces from horror movies of the past too. An anthology film, we see a selection of tales about all kinds of demons, in a fun, dark and creepy portmanteau. Lawrie Brewster, Andrew Ionides, Brad Watson, Mitch Wilson, Carlos Omar De Leon, Matthan Harris, Dane Keil, Mark Logan and others direct here, and we see names like Laurence R. Harvey (Human Centipede 2), Tom Zembrod (Knucklebones), Nicholas Vince (Hellraiser) and Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist) among others. It’s a love-letter to horror in the form of demonic tales, and there’s quite a few of them here too.
