In the wake of the great success of the 2016 mini-series “The Night Manager”, adapted from a novel by John le Carré, the BBC, in collaboration with the American AMC, produced another mini-series, “The Little Drummer Girl”, also adapted from a 1983 novel by Le Carré, and directed by well-known internationally acclaimed South Korean director Park Chan-wook.

The novel is a classic spy story and was previously brought to the big screen by George Roy Hill in a 1984 film starring Diane Keaton, Yorgo Voyagis and Klaus Kinski. This new adaptation has faithfully adhered to the original, condensing the 600 and more pages of the book into 6 episodes of approximately one hour each. This obscure Italian horror has Christopher Plummer, Donald Pleasence and atmospheric locations — and a making of story that Severin tells in full unexpurgated detail. Never released in an English- language territory, Augusto Caminito’s brooding shocker had four directors. Its commercial chances were derailed by its deranged star, Klaus Kinski, who poses well, molests his female co-stars and sabotages what was supposed to be a high-end horror attraction. Maybe Werner Herzog could wring what he wanted out of Klaus, but the manic prima donna gave everyone else the shaft.

This thinking man’s epic got left behind with the demise of Road Show movies, which is a shame. A beautifully made, uncompromised story of warring 17th century Germany, it plays like a fine epic, with great performances. Audiences didn’t want to see Michael Caine playing this kind of character in a costume drama that wasn’t glorious escapism. Everybody’s good — it’s a great picture for Omar Sharif and the underappreciated Florinda Bolkan. The (originally) 70mm cinematography looked incredibly good in 1971.
