Lunar New Year is a key box office period in several Asian territories, but nowhere was it more hotly contested this year than in Vietnam, where several local, Japanese and Hollywood movies were slugging it over the week-long holidays (February 9-15).
Tran Thanh’s Mai, a romantic drama that delves into the psychology of its female protagonist, was the clear winner — at the time of writing it was topping the box office with a haul of VND400BN ($16.4M). Produced by Tran Thanh Town and Cj Hk Entertainment, a joint venture between Korea’s Cj Enm and local outfit HKFilm, the film has the potential to break the record set by Tran Thanh’s own The House of No Man, released this time last year, which is Vietnam’s highest ever grossing film with VND476BN ($19.4m).

The Last Wife by Victor Vu is one of those films that makes you feel like you are watching an adaptation of a half-baked novel, but one that’s been made better by Victor Vu’s vision. Everything in the movie points towards melodrama, but the heightened emotions are necessary to get the point across. Themes like love, corruption, and debauchery need this elevated delivery, and The Last Wife proves that it has the means to deliver the goods. The performances are pitch-perfect, and the pacing of the film is very calming, taking us back to the period the film is set in.

For all their success and acclaim, it’s no surprise that various industries around the world would try to ape the formula established by both Marvel and DC Studios by adapting superheroes into the local cultures. The idea of everyday people being bestowed with special powers or abilities far beyond their own, taking it to the forces of evil and other wrongdoers, has generated profits in the billions around the world for multiple titles which have already seen entries crop up imitating this style of filmmaking. Beating efforts like Indonesia’s Gundala to the punch yet only just now finding release is Victor Vu’s attempt at igniting the craze in Vietnam with his newly distributed “Head Rush.”

“Lôi Báo” is part of the Asian selection at Fantasia International Film Festival
Tam (Cuong Seven) is a talented graphic novel artist. Since he was a child, he has been dreaming of becoming a superhero called Lôi Báo and drawing the hero’s adventures is his way to fulfill this dream. In the real world, Tam is an affectionate husband and father despite being – like all creative people – a bit disconnected from the everyday material problems and work deadlines. Fortunately, his wife contributes the necessary business acumen and runs a successful coffee shop, providing a good life for the family. One day, Tam’s quiet existence is suddenly shuttered as he discovers he is terminally ill and has only few weeks left to live.

In his 2012 hit Scandal, Vietnamese helmer Victor Vu played the jealousies of celebrity for thrills with the story of a rivalry between actresses run way out of control. His 'anything for success' tale proved a big hit with local audiences and now Vu looks to up the stakes even farther with Scandal 2, a story of secretive plastic surgery gone very wrong with consequences from beyond the grave. The trailer for this one is freshly arrived and, typical of Vu's work, boasts very high production value and slick thrills. And, happily, it also features English subtitles. She's ready for her close up, kids, check out the trailer below....

The 300-page book is divided into 81 short chapters. Each chapter is a small story seen through the eyes of a child in a village: the tale of "Heaven Toad", a ghost story, a princess, a prince, hungry people, house fires, and floods.Yellow Flowers on Green...

Do you remember when it felt like you couldn't turn a corner in any Asian film culture without stumbling across something utterly horrifying? It wasn't that long ago, after all, when directors in Japan, Hong Kong, Korea and Thailand were firing on all cylinders with a string of fantastic, high end horror pictures coming from all of those nations but as bright as the movement burned it also flared out quickly. Vietnam's Van M Pham, though, he certainly seems to remember.A producer on Victor Vu's 2004 effort Spirits and director of last year's Beyond The Mat, Pham now moves into horror territory with Chung Cu and while he's playing an old song here it would appear that he's playing it very, very well. Excellent production...

The Golden Kite Award (usually called the Oscar of Vietnam) has officially announced the winner. The Talent (original titled Thần Tượng) by first-time director Nguyen Quang Huy surprised everyone with six awards, including "Golden Kite for Best Feature Film", "Best Director:", "Best Supporting Actor", "Best Cinematography", "Best Production Design" and "Best film voted by the Press".The impresario-turned-director Nguyen Quang Huy also defeated veteran directors such as Charlie Nguyen and Victor Vu. With its story revolving about friendship and rivalry in the music business, The Talent isn't really the taste of the Vietnamese Cinema Department, which always honors war films made by government funding. But that musical drama won anyway, leaving a question mark about the unusual choice of the judges. Here is the full list...

If you’re into sexy, stylish thrillers then Vietnamese director Victor Vu’s latest offering, “Scandal”, might be right up your alley. Check out the new trailer, embedded below, it’s a tight, moody affair. Despite the fact that there are no subtitles, you get the general idea. There is a sinister tone and atmosphere, with elements of horror and crime, as well as straight up psychological thriller. There are murders, shady deals, and what appear to be witches. With a plot that involves pop stars, high fashion models, and movie starlets, as well as a title like “Scandal”, you can also bet that the film has a thing or two to say about obsession, media, fandom, and fame. It’ll be interesting to see where the brain trauma fits into all of these other pieces. Perhaps some of the darkness comes from hallucinations from a brain tumor or something along those lines.

Vietnam's Victor Vu is a director who seems to do a little bit of everything. He's done romantic comedy. He's done horror. Earlier this year he released period martial arts piece Blood Letter. And now he's back to what is perhaps his most familiar ground with a slick thriller titled Scandal due for release later this year.Though the lack of subtitles makes specifics hard to come by it's not hard to get the general picture. You've got showbiz rivals going at one another with a brain injury leaving one to wonder whether it's perhaps all in her head.Whatever's going on it's a slickly shot, well put together affair. Take a look below....

In late November Twitch shared the first trailer for Vietnamese martial arts film Blood Letter (Thiên mệnh anh hùng). The art direction and design were simply gorgeous and what was shown of the action sequences - choreographed by The Rebel and Clash star Johnny Tri Nguyen - promised good things.Well, with the film gearing up for a rapidly approaching January release date for the Tet holidays, the full theatrical trailer has now arrived as well. This second effort gives a better look at both characters and action and while nobody will ever dispute that Vu loves his slow motion and smoothly sweeping camera arcs the...

Vietnamese-American director Victor Vu has been mentioned in the pages of Twitch many times over the years, the director seeming to shift through genres and styles like many change a suit of clothes and - as a general rule - doing them all well. He's done ghost stories, thrillers, romantic comedies, a bit of action, a bit of drama. You name it and Vu has probably tried it. And there simply no denying that whatever his chosen genre on any given project, Vu is one of the most visually gifted directors working in Vietnam and he is putting those visual skills to great effect with the upcoming Blood Letter (Thiên mệnh anh hùng).Adapted from a popular novel (Bức Huyết Thư by Bùi Anh Tấn)...

A few years back, just as the current wave of Vietnamese film was begin to draw attention around the glob, one of the first to make a splash was Spirits, a ghost story by Victor Vu. Like many of the driving forces behind this wave, Vu grew up in America - not Vietnam - but has returned to his cultural home in his professional life.
Spirits won a lot of praise on the festival circuit and would soon be followed by successful romcom Passport To Love. And now, with his latest picture, Vu is back into genre territory with the slick thriller Inferno. Here's the official synopsis:
Saigon, District 7. Heavy rain falls from the dark sky. A car speeds across an intersection and loses control, smashing into a delivery truck. The car flips through the air and explodes in flames. The man in the car is severely burned - his face completely disfigured.
