A new episode of the Revisited video series has arrived online this morning… and this time around, we’re looking back at a movie that has a very bad reputation: director Rupert Wainwright’s 2005 remake of the John Carpenter cult classic The Fog (you can watch the remake Here). This video sets out to explain “Why The Fog fails,” and you can hear all about it in the embed above.
Directed by Wainwright from a screenplay written by Cooper Layne, The Fog remake feels like an attempt to put a J-horror-style twist on the ideas from Carpenter’s film. It has the following synopsis: The prosperous town of Antonio Bay, Oregon is born in blood, as the town’s founders get their money by murdering a colony of lepers. But the truth of what they did is concealed from subsequent generations. More than 100 years later, Elizabeth Williams, whose family lives in Antonio Bay,...

John Carpenter’s illustrious catalog of horror and non-horror classics has already seen three remakes, with at least one more kinda-sorta confirmed on the way (Escape from New York). If you consider 2011’s The Thing enough of a remake, notch another on the bedpost. It makes sense; Carpenter turned his no-bullshit attitude into a masterful filmmaking style, and those listed titles harbor nostalgic admiration. We’re probably closer than we think to seeing Bryan Fuller’s Christine remake for Blumhouse or a contemporary They Live, while Dwayne Johnson’s Big Trouble in Little China sequel project fades away. Imagine Julia Ducournau’s Christine should Fuller exit, or what about if James Gunn booked a brief horror vacation away from the Dceu for his take on They Live?
Carpenter’s brand of down-and-dirty storytelling mixed with societal commentaries make his works perfect for generational updates, but they can’t all be winners.

In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be tackling Mick Garris and Stephen King’s unfairly maligned Sleepwalkers!
For every successful Stephen King adaptation, there are usually a handful of lesser projects lurking in its shadow. From Dreamcatcher to Lawnmower Man, the King of Horror actually has quite a few box-office bombs under his belt, with some fans justifying this by claiming that adaptations miss out on crucial inner monologues and emotional subtext. However, there is one Stephen King project that suggests that there might be more to the middling reception of some of these movies than the adaptational process.
Naturally, I’m referring to Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers, the one and only time that Stephen King wrote a story specifically for the big screen. Back in the early 90s, King’s tales were already sizzling hot properties at movie studios, so Columbia Pictures immediately accepted King’s offer...

Rupert Wainwright will no longer direct “Not Without Hope,” a survival drama with Miles Teller that was scheduled to start shooting in the Dominican Republic this August.
The filmmaker’s exit is being attributed to “creative differences.” The production is now looking for a new director, a search that will likely push back filming by at least a few weeks. Wainwright’s previous credits include “Stigmata,” “The Fog” and “Blank Check.”
“Not Without Hope” tells the story of Nick Schuyler, who managed to survive hours in the freezing water after his boat capsized in the Gulf of Mexico. Schuyler was on a fishing trip with three friends, two of whom were Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper and free-agent NFL defensive lineman Corey Smith. Their brutal ordeal became a major news story. The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Schuyler and Jere Longman. E. Nicholas Mariani wrote the screenplay.

The Dominican Republic’s lauded film law marks its 10th year amid general elections set for July. Fortunately, the three main candidates are said to be pro-cinema.
“The law is up for a review, but we don’t think there will be too many changes,” says film commissioner Yvette Marichal.
As the country gears up to emerge from its Covid-19 lockdown by July 1, it is still unclear when productions will restart and shuttered cinemas reopen. Nevertheless, pre-production on some shows is in full swing.
Set construction for a big-budget supernatural thriller by a major Hollywood director has begun at the world-class Pinewood Dominican Republic water filming facility, albeit with health and safety protocols in place. Another supernatural thriller, “Geechee” from Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios, will resume production at Pinewood Dr by the end of July.

In a world without Covid-19, we’d be anxiously awaiting the upcoming sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick.” Instead of seeing that movie this summer, we now have to wait for the sequel in December, which means it’ll be several months before we see what Miles Teller brings to the Tom Cruise-led franchise. The Fog announces itself as an old-fashioned spook-show in its first scene: kids huddle around a campfire as John Houseman spins a morbid tale about a band of shipwrecked sailors murdered 100 years ago this very night. Those sailors vowed to return and that’s just what they do, using the fog that blankets this little seaside town as their method of transportation. Starring Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis and Janet Leigh, the film was a solid success bringing in nearly 22 million on its 1 million dollar budget. The Fog was remade in 2005, directed by Rupert Wainwright and starring Selma Blair.

Is it too much to hope for in a multiplex horror movie that it’ll deal with adult themes, have a few memorable lines and won’t be shot like a music video? Yes, it is, so the most you can ever hope for is a visceral thrill.

"The Fog" announces itself as an old-fashioned spook-show in its first scene: kids huddle around a campfire as John Houseman spins a morbid tale about a band of shipwrecked sailors murdered 100 years ago this very night. "The Fog" was remade in 2005, directed by Rupert Wainwright and starring Selma Blair.

British filmmaker Rupert Wainwright has directed features ranging from Disney's “Blank Check” to the horror movies “Stigmata” and “The Fog,” but he's currently tackling a very different assignment — selling Russia to the rest of the world for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. As founder of Los Angeles-based advertising agency Adore Creative, Wainwright developed and produced a series of short films that helped Russia win its bid to host the World Cup in 2018. Adore also created and produced several TV commercials and promotional films that helped Russia land this year's Sochi Winter Olympic Games, the 2013 University Games (the...

It seems the only time I can find that I wrote about a possible big-screen adaptation of The Outer Limits was way back in 2004 when Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) was attached to direct. Unless I'm missing something I haven't covered it before or since, but today THR brings word the newly crowned director of Marvel's Dr. Strange, Scott Derrickson, has been tapped to write a screenplay for the long gestating feature alongside his Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill. "The Outer Limits" was a sci-fi television program that first aired back in the mid-60s and was then remade and aired on Showtime from 1995 to 2002. Here's how the THR story describes the plot: The duo will be tackling time travel, alien invasion and genetic manipulation in adapting the episode, which focused on a man with no memory beyond the last 10 days and a computerized hand who discovers he is from the future.

Pier Paolo Pasolini’S Trilogy Of Life (Criterion) Pier Paolo Pasolini was Italy’s last Neo-Realist, a product of post-ww II Europe who was fervently Catholic, openly gay, defiantly Marxist, and one of the most original voices of the 20th century’s second half. Before his brutal murder in 1975 (after the premiere of his still-controversial swan song, “Salo”), Pasolini directed a trilogy of films based on masterpieces of medieval literature: Boccaccio’s “The Decameron,” Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales,” and “The Thousand and One Nights (also known as “The Arabian Nights”). The three films celebrate the uninhibited, earthy, raw carnal nature of the original texts, leaving little to the imagination, but also offering Pasolini’s own very unique and pointed views on modern society, consumerism, religious and sexual mores (and hypocrisies), and an unexpurgated celebration of the human body, both male and female. Extraordinary production design by Dante Ferretti and another evocative,...

The Fog Original (1980)
Directed by John Carpenter
Written by John Carpenter & Debra Hill
Starring: Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh & Hal Holbrook
With all the horror films I watch, I sometimes forget how frightening something as simplistic as a shadow emerging from the fog can be and yet, you’ll find a few moments of these here in The Fog and each time, as the sailor’s ghosts lurk towards these unsuspecting poor souls, they’re as effective and chilling as they were the first time – Now, this is what makes The Fog so effective – John Carpenter’s understanding of horror and how he chooses to wonderfully build the mood and suck the audience into the worlds he establishes.

This is a story that I’ve been looking into for the last two weeks – but it looks like someone scooped us!
Cult legend Kurt Russell, Sharon Stone and Oscar-winner Adrien Brody are set to star in Waco. The film will detail the David Koresh siege in Waco, Texas in 1993. The project is set to be directed by Rupert Wainwright, the director of Stigmata and the remake of The Fog.
According to Rupert Wainwright’s site:
“Waco will be the first narrative feature film to explore the events of the Atf raid on Mt. Carmel, TX, the 51-day siege that followed, and the devastating compound fire that resulted in the deaths of 81 civilians. The movie cuts between Atf special agents, FBI Negotiators, the Davidians on the inside, the tactical Hostage Rescue Team leaders, and…

If we hadn't just had word of the possible Benicio Del Toro / Cameron Diaz romantic comedy pairing, the cast currently attached to star in Rupert Wainwright's film Waco might seem like one of the strangest casting collections of the day: Kurt Russell, Adrien Brody and Sharon Stone are potentially teaming to recreate the Atf raid on the Branch Davidian compound outside Waco that was led by David Koresh. The siege and actions that led to it cost the lives of 82 residents of the compound and 4 federal agents. Production Weekly had the casting news in a tweet, while more info on the project comes from Wainwright's own website. There, we find that, Waco will be the first narrative feature film to explore the events of the Atf raid on Mt. First up, after hearing that Zooey Deschanel would star in Enchantress of Numbers, Production Weekly has followed up with more casting as Billy Crudup (Watchmen, Almost Famous) and Toby Jones (Infamous, The Mist) have also joined the cast. The film is a period drama from director Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) that will focus on the life of Ada Lovelace, a wholly interesting and brilliant English woman who's often regarded as the world's first computer programmer. No word on what roles Crudup and Jones will be playing though. Next, Production Weekly keeps the casting news coming as they report Kurt Russell, Adrien Brody and Sharon Stone will star in Waco. Director Rupert Wainwright's official synopsis of the film from his own website says the film "will be the first narrative feature film to explore...

Yesterday is widely remembered as the anniversary of the Oklahoma City federal building bombings, but April 19 also marks an entirely different, violent American tragedy-- the 1993 raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. 81 people, including 17 children, were killed after the government tried to investigate illegal weapons at the compound, resulting in a 51-day siege and eventually an immense fire. Anyone who came of age in the 90s likely thinks of this any time the town of Waco is mentioned. There's an amazing story in the Waco situation that has yet to make it to film, and now director Rupert Wainwright will be the first to fictionalize it. Production Weekly reported that Kurt Russell, Adrien Brody and Sharon stone are attached to the film, titled Waco, which is scheduled to film this fall. Additional information at Wainwright's official site notes that he co-wrote the screenplay with investigative journalist James Hibberd,...

Odd cast combo of the day alert: Kurt Russell, Adrien Brody and Sharon Stone have all signed on to star in Waco, which will cover one of the most infamous events in Us law enforcement history.Production Weekly has it that Rupert Wainwright – last seen directing The Fog remake – will handle the film, which will track the 1993 incident in Texas with the bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms laying siege to the compound holding David Koresh and his personal cult, the Branch Davidians. After reports of child abuse and rape emerged from the isolated compound, federal agents took action, leading to a devastating fire within the structure that left 81 people dead and a wealth of controversies about how the authorities handled the situation.According to The Playlist, investigative journalist Lee Hibberd wrote the script and the filmmakers will tap the experience of documentarian Michael McNulty, who made Waco: The Rules Of Engagement about the topic.

Yesterday marked the 17th anniversary of the tragedy in Waco, Texas. After a botched raid on the Branch Davidian compound by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, a tense 51-day standoff ensued. News crews recorded seemingly every moment of the showdown between the Us Government and Davidian leader David Koresh -- including the last moments, when the compound caught fire. When the blaze was finally extinguished, more than 75 people were dead, including Koresh. Documentaries have probed into the events at Waco for years now (Waco: The Rules of Engagement is particularly fascinating), but we've yet to see a fictionalized accounting of the events of that winter and spring. That's about to change.

Sam Jackson Not in Thor: This is only a bit of clearing up as I thought Samuel L. Jackson was reprising his role as Nick Fury in all of the Marvel based films surrounding the anticipated The Avengers film to be directed by Joss Whedon, but apparently that's not the case. Jackson was quoted in an interview saying, "I'm not in Thor. Supposed to do Captain America this summer in London." As far as why he's not in Thor, he adds, "I thought I was, they said I was in the trades and I was like, 'Ooh! I got a job!' I called my agent he said, 'Naw, you're not in it.' I was like, 'Well sh*t, they need to pay me if they're gonna put my name in it. Somethin'.'" Jackson will next be seen as Nick Fury in Iron Man 2 on May 7. [Latino Review]

It's a pretty slow news day, enough that most blogs appear to be focused on new ways to take care of our health or something. But that's the boring part of the web that doesn't concentrate on movies. The cool blogs are all about one topic today: Michael Bay's personal casting update on Transformers 3: Just Kill Us All Now and Take Over Our Planet Already So We Don't Have to See Anymore of These Movies.
Basically there are two trends involved. One is the shock some people have to the idea that an actor who starred in Con Air and an actress who starred in AEon Flux are stooping to the level of Michael Bay. As for John Malkovich, it's definitely an improvement working with Bay over Simon West. And for Frances McDormand: the Oscar aside, she's probably thankful to be cast by someone other than her husband.

Chicago – I am an unabashed junkie of anthology horror shows and will gladly debate with you why “The Twilight Zone” is the best show of all time before we get to discussing “The Outer Limits,” “Amazing Stories,” and “Tales From the Crypt.” Naturally, I was a big fan of Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” and was intrigued when a lot of that series’ major players jumped to NBC for “Fear Itself”. The show was a ratings failure and got very little buzz and the first season DVD makes it clear why. Even for an anthology show fan, this is a tough sell.
DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 “Fear Itself” features thirteen episodes that aired on NBC during the summer of 2008. Like “Masters of Horror” (both shows were produced by the legendary Mick Garris), each episode was directed by a different horror writer and director. When a TV series whose broadcast run got nipped in the bud re-emerges on DVD in its entirety, the hope is always that it will allow for the discovery of buried treasures. This is particularly so in the case of Fear Itself, since each of its 13 episodes was helmed by a different director, and only eight got aired before NBC quietly dropped it from the schedule in summer 2008.
Lionsgate’s new four-disc set, however, reveals that Fear Itself’s best stuff actually did make it to the tube the first time around, most notably the contributions by genre faves Stuart Gordon and Larry Fessenden. You can check out our previous reviews of the original eight via these links:
