We'll Probably Get a Wonder Woman Reboot Before GTA 6
Image
Fans might get another Wonder Womanmovie in the near future. The news comes by way of industry insiders close to the studio.

Sources told Variety that Warner Bros. Discovery is "fast-tracking a Wonder Woman movie. And the studio is thrilled with Matt Reeves' just-submitted screenplay draft for the sequel to The Batman." And although the studio is interested in a sequel with Superman stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, an announcement will likely not happen any time soon. Representatives for the studio have not commented on these reports.

The last time Diana Prince was seen in her own feature film was in writer-director Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 1984. Released in 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 marked the second Wonder Woman film to star Gal Gadot, and dropped viewers into the middle of the 1980s for a period-appropriate superhero story. The film starred an ensemble cast, including returning star Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.

Harris Dickinson’s Directorial Debut ‘Urchin’ Bought by 1-2 Special for North America (Exclusive)
Image
“Urchin,” the directorial debut of “Babygirl” and “Triangle of Sadness” star Harris Dickinson, has been acquired for North America by 1-2 Special, the New York-based distributor that launched earlier this year.

The film — a vivid portrayal of homelessness and mental health on the streets of London — bowed in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard sidebar in May to solid reviews and an enthusiastic 5-minute standing ovation. It wound up winning the competition’s best performance prize for its breakout actor Frank Dillane as well as the Fipresci Prize awarded by the International Federation of Film Critics.

1-2 Special is planning a theatrical release for the film this fall.

“Urchin” is a deeply personal work for Dickinson — who also appears in the film — and is centered on characters living on the margins of society. The story follows Mike (Dillane), a rough sleeper in London who becomes trapped in a cycle of self-destruction as...

Exclusive: Tarik Saleh’s Cannes Competition title Eagles Of The Republic has been acquired by Curzon for UK-Ireland release from Playtime.

It is the final instalment of Swedish-Egyptian Saleh’s Cairo trilogy and sees Fares Fares play Egypt’s most adored actor, who is pressured to star in a film commissioned by the highest authorities. ‘Eagles of the Republic’ Review: An Egyptian Movie Star Is Forced to Make a Propaganda Film in Tarik Saleh’s Catchy but Muddled Age of Autocracy Thriller
Image
“Eagles of the Republic” is a Cairo-set political thriller one can slot into the following category: movies about life under autocracy that feel different to watch — at least to Americans — than they would have six months ago. That’s because they hit so much closer to home now. It might sound off-the-wall to describe “Eagles of the Republic” as an “entertaining” saga of repression, but the central character is a fictional Egyptian movie star, and for its first hour or so the film is vivid and funny as it invites us to revel in the perks and gossipy vanity of his charmed but flawed existence.

George Fahmy (Fares Fares) is a veteran actor, known as the “Pharoah of the Screen,” who carries himself like the legend he is. He’s tall, with glittering dark eyes and a hawkish profile; he looks like Liam Neeson, with a hint of Harry Dean Stanton’s hangdog melancholy.

Eagles of the Republic Review: A Star’s Dangerous Performance
Image
Tarik Saleh’s Eagles of the Republic follows George Fahmy, once Egypt’s most bankable star, as he confronts an impossible moral trial. Summoned by shadowy government agents to embody President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in a state-sponsored biopic, Fahmy initially navigates the assignment with wry detachment.

Early scenes unfold on chaotic soundstages, where barking producers demand patriotic flair and the aging actor finds himself hustling for erectile medication under cover of night. As the regime’s grip tightens through threats against his son, the film shifts from dark comedy into a razor-sharp political thriller.

Set in contemporary Cairo under authoritarian rule, Saleh examines the collision of celebrity and coercion, asking how far one will bend when art becomes a weapon and family safety hangs in the balance.

Narrative & Thematic Exploration

Saleh divides the film into three narrative arcs, each escalating stakes and shifting tone. In the opening, on-set absurdities such...

‘Eagles of the Republic’ Review: Movies Collide With Political Might in Tarik Saleh’s Dark and Clever Conspiracy Thriller
Image
Once again navigating a labyrinth of corruption and bad behavior inside contemporary Egypt, writer-director Tarik Saleh delivers another solid, thought-provoking thriller with Eagles of the Republic. Both entertaining and insightful, not to mention darkly funny in its first half, the Swedish-Egyptian filmmaker follows up The Nile Hilton Incident and Cairo Conspiracy with a crime-ridden drama about a famous actor who’s forced to play President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in a biopic, then pays a high price for his success.

Reteaming with star Fares Fares, who headlined the above-mentioned films, Saleh completes what could be considered his Cairo trilogy, with each movie tackling a hot-button social or political issue through well-crafted genre storytelling. If Nile Hilton focused on drugs and police malfeasance and Conspiracy took on fraud in the world of Muslim clerical schools, Eagles highlights the dirty dealings between the government and the film industry, showing how popular artists are...

‘Eagles Of The Republic’ Review: The Terrific Fares Fares Stars In Tarik Saleh’s Precision-Tooled Political Thriller – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Swedish director Tarik Saleh would be a left-field but great pick for a Bond movie, and the third entry in his Cairo trilogy — following The Nile Hilton Incident (2017) and Boy from Heaven (2022) — is the proof. Like his previous films, it stars terrific Lebanese-Swedish actor Fares Fares (an actor so good they named him twice), in another precision-tooled political thriller that starts with a good deal more humor that seen previously in his works but rapidly ratchets up the tension for a shattering climax. Deftly and daringly blending fact and fiction, it shares DNA with István Szabó’s 1981 Nazi-era drama Mephisto.

Like Mephisto, it is about a self-seeking actor whose arrogance gets him into bad company. Fares plays George Fahmy, the biggest movie star in Egypt. They call him “The Pharoah of the Screen,” and that adoration has been the ruin of him. Having abandoned his wife and son, he lives...

Cannes Review: Eagles of the Republic is a Playful Comedy-Thriller About an Egyptian Movie Star
Image
George Fahmy (Fares Fares) is an A-list movie star of the highest order, something Eagles of the Republic establishes at the jump. We open on him with a beautiful woman in a convertible on a soundstage, wrapping a glamorous film shoot. He turns down a call from his son, instructing his assistant to instead rush out and buy him a luxury Breitling Navitimer watch for his birthday. As he exits the stage in his vintage Jaguar, a mural of Fahmy on the exterior studio wall declares him “Pharaoh of the Screen.” At a birthday lunch that afternoon, his son admonishes him for dating someone close to his own age, which Fahmy dismisses as tabloid fodder (it’s not). He’s referring to Donya (Lyna Khoundri in a comic-relief role as a talentless actress).

Set in present-day Egypt, Eagles of the Republic draws on recent national history, in which then-minister of...

Harris Dickinson’s Directorial Debut ‘Urchin’ Gets 5-Minute Cannes Standing Ovation, Plus Lots of Love From Paul Mescal
Image
“Triangle and Sadness” and “Babygirl” star Harris Dickinson has delighted the Cannes crowd with his feature directorial debut “Urchin.”

The film, led by “Fear the Walking Dead” star Frank Dillane and a vivid portrayal of homelessness and mental health on the streets of London, had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard competition. “Urchin” earned its new filmmaker and his cast an enthusiastic 5-minute ovation.

Dickinson looked relieved at the reception, waving across the room to whoops from the crowd.

“It’s really an honor to be here and to share it with you guy is special,” he told the audience before the screening. “I’m nervous. I hope you enjoy it and if you don’t, tell us gently.”

Judging by the response, few didn’t enjoy it. Among those joining in the ovation was Paul Mescal, soon set to star alongside Dickinson in the upcoming quartet of...

Scarlett Johansson's Sci-fi Film From The Fifth Element Director Becomes a Hit on Streaming Ahead of Her Directorial Debut
Image
In between her role as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlett Johansson starred in a very successful sci-fi film. In 2014, she teamed up with The Fifth Element director Luc Besson for Lucy.

The Oscar-nominated actress played the lead character, a woman who gained psychokinetic abilities after being injected with a synthetic drug. The sci-fi film was a huge commercial hit for Universal Pictures, which distributed the film internationally, although it didn't boast the best reviews from the audience. 11 years after its premiere, Lucy found success again on streaming, Tudum reveals.

Lucy just returned to the charts on Netflix, debuting in fourth place in the U.S. charts. The sci-fi film only made it in the top 10 domestically, but it was enough to enter the global charts, too, in ninth place. In the week between Apr. 7 and 13, Lucy received 2.6 million views and 3.8 hours viewed.

The French director wrote and directed the film,...

Harris Dickinson’s Directorial Debut ‘Urchin’ Starring Frank Dillane Heads to EFM With Charades (Exclusive)
Image
He may be Hollywood’s newly-crowned It boy thanks to his starring role in “Babygirl” opposite Nicole Kidman, but Harris Dickinson has already made moves behind the camera.

The British actor’s directorial feature debut “Urchin” — now in post-production — is heading to the European Film Market in Berlin, with Charades launching sales. Gersh and UTA Independent Film Group are co-repping the film in the U.S.

Written by Dickinson, whose acting credits also include “Triangle of Sadness,” “Blitz” and “The Iron Claw,” the story follows Mike, a rough sleeper in London trapped in a cycle of self-destruction as he attempts to turn his life around. As per the description, the film is “raw and absurd,” and a “story about the strange patterns that keep pulling us back.”

The film stars Frank Dillane as Mike, alongside Megan Northam plus Amr Waked, Karyna Khymchuk and Shonagh Marie.

Henry Cavill’s Highlander Reboot: $53M Franchise’s Worst Whitewashing Criticism Must be Undone by Hiring the Right Poc Actor for One Character
Image
Despite starring the incredible and timeless Sean Connery in the film, the original Highlander was a terrible attempt at establishing a high-concept project in the mid-80s. Even for a fantasy epic, the film was decidedly too far-fetched, not to mention problematic and culturally inappropriate in hindsight.

Highlander [Credit: Warner Bros., 20th Century Studios, Columbia Pictures]

As the industry now calls for a timely reboot helmed by none other than Henry Cavill, the misjudged, misrepresented, and ill-treated hero of modern Hollywood, it is only fitting that the film is done right the second time around. Highlander has the potential to be great, even a modern-day classic perhaps, but only if it learns from the errors of its past and lays down a path paved with proper representation in the future.

Rebecca Hall Hears a Hum in Mysterious Series 'The Listeners' Trailer
Image
"The hum is not your enemy!" Or is it? BBC has revealed the trailer for a mystery thriller series called The Listeners, which will be streaking in the UK later this month. No US date is set yet - hopefully soon. Not to be confused with the mystery thriller movie called The Watchers from this summer or Steve Buscemi's film The Listener. The Listeners tells the story of Claire, a teacher, who begins to hear a low humming sound and finds support from others who can hear it. What is this sound? Where is it coming from? Even doctors have no idea. BBC describes it as "enigmatic, provocative, and haunting" and says it will explore "the seduction of the wild & unknowable, the human search for the transcendent, the rise of conspiracy culture in the West, and the desire for community & connection in our increasingly polarised times." Starring Rebecca Hall as Claire,...

This underrated Netflix original series turns 10 in 2024
Image
Hip hip hooray! This year, an underrated Netflix original series will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Can you guess what show it is? I'll give you a hint. The show's title shares the same exact name of a game you play with friends in a pool. Drum roll, please. It's none other than the period drama, Marco Polo!

The first season was released on Netflix on Dec. 12, 2014. This means that on Dec. 12, 2024, the period drama will be turning 10. Naturally, it would make sense to rewatch the series to celebrate its upcoming anniversary, and that's exactly what we're going to do. You should as well!

Created by John Fusco, Marco Polo is loosely based on the adventures of the real-life Venetian explorer Marco Polo. The story takes place during the 13th century and focuses on Marco Polo's time in the court of Kublai Khan, the Mongolian emperor, to whom he becomes a trusted advisor and friend.

7 Best Shows Like ‘The Bear’ To Watch If You Love The Series
Image
The Bear has to be one of the best series ever created. The FX comedy-drama series is intense, funny, tragic, and has some of the most beautiful-looking food I’ve ever seen. Created by Christopher Storer, The Bear follows the story of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, an award-winning working in one of the best restaurants in the United States, as he moves back to Chicago to run his family-owned sandwich shop after a tragic incident. The Bear aired its third season recently, and I’m happy to say that the series is getting better with every new season. We are also happy that The Bear was renewed for a fourth season ahead of its Season 3 premiere. The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White in the lead role, with Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson, Jon Bernthal, Oliver Platt, L-Boy, and Edwin Lee Gibson starring in supporting. Firebrand Director Reveals The Special Ingredient Alicia Vikander Brings To Catherine Parr
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag. Catherine Parr's story highlights soft power and legacy, emphasizing education and generosity over violence and war. Alicia Vikander's portrayal adds mystery to the role of Queen Catherine, showcasing strong convictions and eloquence. Firebrand explores the perilous marriage of Catherine Parr to Henry VIII, set against court intrigue and the king's paranoia.

Brazilian director Karim Anouz dives into the history of England's royal family in Firebrand, which follows the final days of Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine Parr. The last of his six wives, Catherine is also the only one to come out of the marriage without either being divorced or beheaded though the movie highlights how she came close to both. Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth's screenplay is based on Elizabeth Fremantle's 2013 novel Queen's Gambit, but it focuses specifically on how Catherine's religious radicalism created conflict in her domestic life.

‘Firebrand’ Review: Karim Aïnouz’s Muddled, Revisionist Portrait of Henry VIII’s Last Wife
Image
The opening title cards of Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand state that history is written primarily about men and war, while “for the rest of humanity, we must draw our own—often wild—conclusions.” For audiences, it’s a warning of the revisionism to come in this story of Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law).

It is, though, not a promise of a compelling or invigorating story. That’s because the filmmakers, as intent as they were to play fast and loose in the sandbox of history, hardly explore the motives and emotions that drive Katherine as she balances her fealty to her husband and her friend Anne Askew (Erin Doherty), the famed poet who fought for the cause of English Reformation.

Instead, what follows is an often shapeless and rudderless film, focused mainly on whether or not King Henry trusts Katherine.

Ramy Season 4 Gets An Encouraging Update Two Years After Finale
Image
Ramy season 4's return date is uncertain, but series star and co-creator Ramy Youssef says the show will return. Hulu remains open to picking up the show for one or two seasons in the future. Despite the show's potential ending, it has accomplished much in highlighting Muslim-American stories and a talented cast.

Ramy season 4 gets an encouraging update from creator and star Ramy Youssef two years after the season 3 finale. Centering on Ramy Hassan (Youssef) and his family by delving into their lives and experiences as a Muslim American family living in New Jersey, the A24-produced dramedy has helped to define Hulu and highlight standout talents both in front of and behind the camera. But as the cast and crew have taken on other projects, it remains a question mark as to when the Golden Globe-winning show will return for season 4.

Jude Law & Alicia Vikander in Historical England in 'Firebrand' Trailer
Image
"Do you believe in Hell? I think we're both bound for it." Roadside Attractions has revealed the first official trailer for Firebrand, the latest from Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year, which is why they're debuting the trailer now just before Cannes 2024 kicks off soon. In a rotten, blood soaked island kingdom, there once was a queen by the name of Katherine Parr. The sixth wife of the vengeful King Henry VIII - and the only one to survive. Image
Director Luc Besson addresses the development of a Lucy sequel. Lucy's success at the box office has spurred a spinoff series starring Morgan Freeman as Professor Samuel Norman. The series is likely to explore the theme of unlocking human potential beyond the limits of traditional brain capacity.

Director Luc Besson has addressed the news of a sequel to his 2014 sci-fi action movie, Lucy, revealing that he has not been included in the development of such a project. Speaking with The Playlist, Besson said that, while he has heard about Lucy 2, he is not involved...despite what some reports may have claimed.

First-Look: Rebecca Hall Is Teacher Tormented By Humming Noise In The BBC & Element Pictures’ ‘The Listeners’
Image
Vicky Cristina Barcelona star Rebecca Hall was one of the buzziest names to feature on the BBC’s recent 12-strong drama slate and the BAFTA winner can now be seen in first look images playing a teacher in Element Pictures’ The Listeners.

Adapted by the novel’s author Jordan Tannahill, Hall’s character Claire is tormented by a low humming sound that no one else around her can hear. This seemingly innocuous noise gradually upsets the balance of her life, increasing tension between herself and her husband, Paul, and daughter, Ashley. But despite multiple doctors, no obvious source or medical cause can be found.

Scroll down for more pics, including another of Hall and one of Ollie West (Hamnet), who plays student Kyle and can also hear the sound.

Also starring in the series, which was filmed in Greater Manchester, are Prasanna Puwanarajah, Amr Waked (Ramy), Gayle Rankin, Mia Tharia (Phoenix Rise), Franc Ashman, Samuel Edward Cook, Karen Henthorn, Lucy Sheen (Ping Pong) and Ian Mercer.

Deadline revealed the show’s development last March and Poor Things producer Element is making it with Janicza Bravo – whose past credits include Zola, Mrs America and Them – directing. Hall is also starring in James L. Brooks’ next movie Ella McCay and Tessa Thompson’s similarly-named helpline drama The Listener. Fremantle is distributing The Listeners.

Rebecca Dundon, SVP Scripted Content, International at Fremantle said: “The Listeners is a thriller like no other that will surprise, provoke and challenge the status quo.”

Ramy Youssef (‘Ramy’) reveals how he loves to ‘get near that thing you’re not supposed to’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
When Ramy Youssef is writing an episode of his self-titled Hulu show, he absolutely loves walking that fine line between comedy and drama. “It’s probably my favorite thing to do in comedies, to just get near that thing you’re not supposed to. I feel that if someone’s gonna give me their time, I want to be able to cover something that could crack open a conversation at the dinner table that wouldn’t have been opened without some sort of healthy debate,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). He feels that with the most recent season of the program he has really found that perfect tone to strike for the series. “I feel like in the third season we really struck a great balance between our character development and it being something that just really makes me laugh out loud.

‘Ramy’ Season 3 Trailer Shows Bella Hadid’s Acting Debut (Video)
Bella Hadid
Bella Hadid‘s Ramy character is revealed in the Season 3 trailer, above. Returning to Hulu September 30, the Ramy Youssef-led comedy-drama follows first-generation, Egyptian-American Ramy Hassan and his family as they navigate spirituality in their politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood. In the new season, Ramy continues to question his Muslim faith as part of a millennial generation that doubts an afterlife even exists. His family is forced to confront having lived a life dedicated to worldly concerns — and in some cases, lies — while Ramy all but abandons his spiritual journey, instead dedicating himself to the diamond business he has with his uncle. Hadid makes her acting debut as Lena, revealed in the trailer to be a love interest of Ramy’s buddy Steve (Steve Way). The two met on a Muslim dating app called Muslim Match, which apparently does not require users like Steve to be Muslim. Ramy also stars Moon Knight star May Calamawy,...

‘Ramy’ Star & Producer On 9/11 Aftermath, Arab American Muslims & A Real Bite Into “Strawberries”
Image
Editor’s note: This article is derived from a conversation between Ramy Youssef and producer Maytha Alhassen and is one in a series of Deadline stories tied to the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

It’s a fairly sunny fall afternoon, and we see Farouk Hassan, the father of an Egyptian-Muslim family based in Rutherford, NJ, securing a wall mount of a USA flag, an aerial welcome mat to alarmed neighbors. In the Emmy-nominated fourth episode of the first season of Hulu’s Ramy, Farouk (played by Amr Waked) explains to his family, “The way they are looking at us. Things are different.”

For many Arab American Muslims, our September 12th vividly resembled this protection spell. Before we had a chance to grieve, to locate our missing loved ones, to wrestle with a local, national and global nightmare, we were forced to run risk-assessment diagnostics and enact those contingency plans immediately. The flag,...

‘Ramy’ Season 2 Review: Ramy Youssef’s Excellent Hulu Series Outgrows Its Main Character
Image
As more people spend their twenties developing into who they want to become rather than settling down and committing to their current identity, more TV shows are focusing on that extended maturation period between teenage folly and adult responsibilities. But in its first season, “Ramy” found multiple ways to freshen things up. Framing the eponymous character’s quest...
