It was the end of January 2021. Modern Family’s long-rumored Mitch & Cam spinoff was on the verge of a green light. Instead, it got a pass.

Years later, star Eric Stonestreet calls that decision by ABC “a little hurtful” and believes the offshoot would’ve been a “slam dunk” and, if picked up, still be on the air right now.

Co-written by Modern Family co-creator/executive producer Christopher Lloyd and longtime executive producers Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh, the proposed spinoff was to chronicle Mitch (Jesse Tylor Ferguson) and Cam (Stonestreet)’s new life with their kids in Missouri.

“Chris Lloyd and a couple of the writers wrote a really great script that spun Jesse and I off in our life in Missouri, and they said ‘no’. They just said, ‘We don’t want to do it,” Stonestreet said in an interview with Graham Bensinger. “And I think it hurt Jesse and I’s feelings.

Nickelodeon has announced the addition of Modern Family, the 22-time Emmy Award-winning acclaimed comedy series, to its Nick at Nite programming lineup beginning Monday, September 9. All 11 seasons of Modern Family will debut in Nickelodeon’s nighttime programming block and air daily from 2-4 a.m. (Et/Pt).

The series joins a stellar roster of popular family comedies, including Emmy Award-winning shows Friends, Mike & Molly, and Mom, as well as beloved sitcoms Young Sheldon and The Neighborhood, and marks the first time the sitcom will air within Paramount’s family of brands.

The “Ted” prequel series has been renewed for Season 2 at Peacock, Variety has learned.

Originally presented as an event series, the seven-episode first season of “Ted” debuted on the streamer in January. It serves as a prequel to the two “Ted” feature films, which were released in 2012 and 2015.

Per Peacock, the show became its most-watched original title to date and was also the top streaming comedy in the U.S. for more than two consecutive months, according to Nielsen data.

The series takes place in the early 1990s in Framingham, Mass. It follows the lives of Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) and his 16 year old best friend, John (Max Burkholder). Ted’s fame has waned and he is now once again living with John and his family.

The series also stars Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach as John’s parents, Matty and Susan, along with Giorgia Whigham as John’s cousin Blaire.

Seth MacFarlane and Peacock aren’t done with Ted yet.

The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has ordered a second season of the comedy, a prequel to the two feature films that have the MacFarlane-voiced living teddy bear at their center. Peacock originally billed Ted as an “event series,” but it will now be an ongoing show.

The renewal comes about four months after Ted premiered on Peacock to solid ratings in January. Peacock has given a second-season pickup to Ted, the prequel TV series to Seth MacFarlane’s Ted film franchise.

The seven-episode initial installment of Ted, released January 11, was billed as an event series. Its overwhelming ratings success, becoming Peacock’s most-watched original series to date and the No. 1 original streaming comedy in the U.S. for more than two consecutive months in the Nielsen rankings, naturally triggered a conversation about a second season.

Despite Ted‘s excellent performance, the renewal decision was not straightforward, I hear, as the comedy’s hybrid live-action/CGI nature makes it expensive to produce, and it also takes a long time to make.

Still, keeping its biggest hit was important to Peacock, and four months after the Season 1 drop, the streamer has ordered a second season.

Set in 1993, Ted comes from writer, director, executive producer and showrunner MacFarlane.

NBCUniversal’s Emmy FYC House is set to return for its third annual pop-up activation at The Aster in Los Angeles from May 16 through May 22.

Additionally, on Wednesday night, Peacock will host their official FYC event for “The Traitors,” a reality show where contestants move into a castle and compete on challenges to earn money for a prize pot. The event will take place at the Ebell in Los Angeles. The panelist list includes host/producer Alan Cumming, as well as exec producer Toni Ireland and Sam Spector, the wardrobe stylist.

At the Aster, the NBCU FYC Emmy showcase features brands including Peacock, NBC, Bravo and Universal Studio Group. The event aims to highlight creatives from their Emmy-eligible shows.

That's exactly the gist of Peacock's new series that takes place several years before the two big-screen Ted movies.

The official trailer went public today, which takes us back to 1993 when John is struggling to come to terms with the pressures of being a teenager.

As for Ted, he's being his crude self and is not impressed about being sent to school.

As expected, there's pushback for Ted as he tries to get acclimated to school life, with one student even comparing him to a dog.

That isn't nice, but in true Ted fashion, he isn't ready to allow someone to talk down to him in school.

There's plenty of the signature wit from the movies, but there's this concern that the show won't be able to sustain that level of humor over a seven-episode season.

“Modern Family” has landed a cable run at Warner Bros. Discovery’s TBS network starting Sept. 25.

The ABC sitcom, which ran for 11 total seasons from 2009 to 2020, will air on TBS for a three-hour block on weekdays — specifically from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on weekdays. The licensing by the cable outlet marks an attempt to bolster its comedy options.

Previously, “Friends” and “Young Sheldon” have occupied the hours that “Modern Family” will run. Both shows will remain on the network. Monday saw longer daily marathons of “The Big Bang Theory” on TBS.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today the motion picture, long-form television, digital series, sports programs and additional television nominations for the 27th Annual Producers Guild Awards.

The categories include: The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures; The Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures; The David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television; Outstanding Sports Program; and Outstanding Digital Series. Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.

"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.

Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.

"Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. You can tell when sitcom writers have seen far too many sitcoms and when they have not. Writers who have seen enough half-hour situational comedies have a problem compiling storylines and jokes that feel entirely fresh, since so much of their humour stockpile comes from scenarios they have seen before. I feel that the Modern Family writers, as the show reaches the end of its fifth season, are doing everything they can to keep the comedy fresh and funny. Almost every time you are certain the series is going to zig one direction with a character or story this season, it zags.
