Malcolm directs and John David stars, while Denzel and daughter Katia co-produce. With an ensemble cast that includes mother Pauletta and another daughter, Olivia, the Washingtons have adapted August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same title. The Tyler Perry-directed Netflix film also won for best actress in a motion picture, with a truly shocked Kerry Washington accepting that prize.

The awards were given out across several nights with the main ceremony held on Saturday night (February 22) at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif.

The show, hosted by Deon Cole, aired live on CBS.

Keke Palmer won the Entertainer of the Year award and Outstanding Motion Picture went to The Six Triple Eight, with the film’s star Kerry Washington also taking home the Best Actress prize.

The theme of this year’s show is “Our Stories, Our Culture, Our Excellence,” with the event celebrating Black excellence.

The nominees for Entertainer of the Year this year are Cynthia Erivo, Keke Palmer, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart, and Shannon Sharpe. The Piano Lesson leads the motion picture categories with 14 nominations while Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist leads the television categories with nine nominations.

Chadwick Boseman was a talented actor best known for playing T’Challa, the superhero Black Panther, in Marvel’s MCU. He first appeared as Black Panther in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016) and later starred in the hugely popular ‘Black Panther’ (2018).

His performance as T’Challa was praised for bringing strength, dignity, and inspiration, especially as it showcased a powerful African superhero to the world. ‘Black Panther’ and by extension Boseman as T’Challa became important cultural heroes.

John David Washington drags down this new adaptation of August Wilson's The Piano Lesson to an inordinate degree, baldly imitating his dad's Troy Maxson and leaving Boy Willie out to dry as a result. Unburdened from even a shred of Denzel's charisma, we get a Boy Willie who's unambiguously trying to sell you a used car even when he's supposed to be bonding with his niece or drinking with a friend. His disastrous turn skews the text even more toward Berniece than it already was - imagine what Stephan James could've done with the role instead. While most period movies are judged on their historical accuracy, comedies usually have different motives. Yesterday evening, a rumour hit social media claiming that Marvel Studios is making moves to recast Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. The news has received a mixed response, though many fans are eager to see the character back on screen.

The NAACP announced nominees in 91 categories in the fields of film, television and streaming, recording, documentary, writing, directing, literary, podcast, stunts and costume design, makeup and hairstyling.

The August Wilson adaptation “The Piano Lesson” led all films with 14 nominations, more than double the total for runner-ups “The Book of Clarence,” “Nickel Boys,” “Exhibiting Forgiveness” and “Bob Marley: One Love,” which received six if you count the nominations for “Clarence” and “Bob Marley” in the music categories.

The 2025 NAACP Image Awards nominations have been revealed, with The Piano Lesson, the Malcolm Washington-directed film adaptation of August Wilson’s play starring Danielle Deadwyler and John David Washington, up for 14 nominations, the most of any film this year.

Other top film nominees include six-time contenders Bob Marley: One Love and The Book of Clarence and five-time nominees Wicked, The Six Triple Eight and Nickel Boys. In addition to Wicked‘s nods, star Cynthia Erivo is also up for the Image Awards’ top prize of entertainer of the year.

For entertainer of the year, Erivo faces off against Keke Palmer, Kendrick Lamar, Kevin Hart and Shannon Sharpe, with the latter’s Club Shay Shay podcast also landing a nod for outstanding culture and society podcast.

For best motion picture, The Piano Lesson, Bob Marley, Wicked and The Six Triple Eight face off against Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

John David Washington found himself in a rare situation while promoting his latest film, Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson.” It was his first real press tour in a while, since the rollout for his previous few films (including Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” and Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator”) were impacted by the Covid pandemic, then the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

“It was a relief to be able to do it like you’re supposed to, as far as getting with the people, right after they see it in the theater, and talking,” Washington says. As 2024 draws to a close, everyone who's prone to opining on the art they've consumed throughout the year is making their lists of bests, worsts and so on. Your friendly neighborhood entertainment junkies at /Film have been busy little beavers over the last couple of weeks, compiling what we collectively believe to be the year's 20 best movies and 15 best TV shows. You may or may not agree with our selections, but we do hope you'll give each and every title a shot if you've got the time.

This list-making bug doesn't just bite critics; regular ol' moviegoers love to get in on the act as well. All you have to do is spend a little time on TikTok or YouTube, and you'll find folks of all ages weighing in on their favorites of the year. One person we've become accustomed to hearing from every December is former president Barack Obama.

The Creator was one of the most creative films of 2023 and the sci-fi flick is now available to stream. From director Gareth Edwards and starring John David Washington, The Creator made a big impact on the public pre-release thanks to stellar trailers and creative marketing techniques involving the film's robots. Disney and 20th Century managed to build a great deal of interest in the film as well. Many considered it one of the best movies of 2023 according to early reactions revealed before its theatrical debut.

While The Creator was released in theaters on September 29, 2023, this did not prove to be the preferred way to watch the movie. Those interested in seeing Gareth Edwards' movie as quickly as possible proved to be a smaller group than expected based on The Creator's box office opening weekend struggling. This prompted more waiting until it came to a streaming service to watch Gareth Edwards' movie at home.

RaMell Ross’ Nickel Boys and Malcolm Washington’ The Piano Lesson dominated the nominations for the 25th Black Reel Awards with 13 and 12 noms, respectively. The films will square off in 10 categories including Outstanding Film, Director, Screenplay and Ensemble.

The Amazon MGM Studios film garnered 13 nominations, followed closely by Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson” with 12; both films were nominated for outstanding film and outstanding director, plus their stars earned individual nods.

A retired Green Beret addresses the inaccuracy of an explosion in a Spike Lee war movie. Since his first feature-length movie, She's Gotta Have It, was released in 1986, Lee's movies have been widely watched and celebrated. In the decade that followed his directorial debut, Lee directed many movies, including the critically acclaimed Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X, with both the 1989 and 1992 movies garnering multiple Academy Award nominations.

Lee's prolific directing career continued into the 2000s with notable movies ranging from the Edward Norton and Philip Seymour Hoffman-led 25th Hour to Inside Man, the latter of which was Spike Lee and Denzel Washington's fourth movie together. Lee received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director in recognition of his 2018 movie, BlacKkKlansman, starring John David Washington and Adam Driver. Gareth Edwards’ latest movie, The Creator (2023), has been a big hit with audiences. Starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Allison Janney, and Madeleine Yuna Voyles (in her first-ever acting role), the film has a cool story and stunning visuals. While it’s inspired by classics like Apocalypse Now (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Akira (1988), Edwards still brings something fresh to the table—especially compared to Hollywood’s recent sci-fi flicks. With its top-notch sci-fi vibes and detailed world-building, the movie feels like a breath of fresh air for fans of the genre. However, the narrative falters due to unfortunate editing choices and a lack of depth in character development. Despite these shortcomings, the film remains a worthwhile watch, especially for those tired of the repetitive themes of alien invasions or AI replacing humans. Mind you, Edwards’ creation at least tried to break free from these tired tropes. I...

It’s time to look at the work of one of the greatest directors of our generation: Christopher Nolan. How big is Nolan these days? Interstellar, a movie which was never among the director’s top grossers, hit IMAX screens last week for its tenth anniversary, and screenings have been selling out constantly. The fact is – Nolan makes movies that belong on the big-screen, and he’s one of the few directors who’s arguably become his own franchise. For proof of that, one need only look at the fact that he’s planning a new movie, and the cast is jampacked with A-listers, because Everyone wants to work with Nolan.

A caveat – our Christopher Nolan movies ranked list is just one person’s opinion, and his work is divisive. Everyone has their favourites (and least favourites), so I’m hoping this ranking will open up some discussion in the comments below.
