While the fictional band Daisy Jones and the Six take the stage inside a sold-out Soldier Field in Chicago for what will be their final show, the “Daisy Jones and the Six” series actors and production team were hundreds of miles away from the Windy City. For the big concert in the Emmy-nominated show’s finale, the Amazon Prime Video series shot scenes in New Orleans – and used Tad Gormley Stadium as a stand-in for the famed home of the Chicago Bears.

“A lot of times when they were performing and the cameras were pointing right at the actors, they were playing to an empty stadium,” Chris Welcker, the “Daisy Jones” production mixer, tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It was just the crew standing out there, the electricians and stuff, and our music supervisor and producer. The Motion Picture Sound Editors on Monday unveiled nomination for the 70th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards. Winners will be announced February 26 at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles.

The organization of professional sound and music editors honors the year’s outstanding feature film, television, animation, computer entertainment, and student productions.

The Mpse will also honor Jerry Bruckheimer with its 2023 Filmmaker Award, and Gwendolyn Yates Whittle with its Career Achievement Award.

Dozens of sound designers, engineers and mixers have signed a petition protesting the Academy’s decision to award the sound Oscar during its pre-telecast hour on Sunday.

A source close to the sound branch also revealed that guild members are planning on wearing their guild badges upside down as a form of silent protest over the demotion of crafts at the Oscars.

Karol Urban, President of the Cinema Audio Society confirmed the protest might go one step further. In a statement, Urban said, “This weekend, the Oscars may be turned upside down as we may see winners from all categories accept their Oscars upside down in a silent show of solidarity with the eight affected categories. We are all filmmakers of equal importance.”

“Dune,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story” have won the top feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 69th annual Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday night.

“Dune” won in the Feature Effects/Foley category, which over the years has been the Mpse’s most accurate predictor of Oscar success. “Nightmare Alley” won in the Feature Dialogue/Adr category, while “West Side Story” won in the music category.

Other film awards went to “Raya and the Last Dragon” for animation, “The Rescue” for documentary and “Cliff Walkers” for foreign-language feature.

Television winners included “Succession,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “The Underground Railroad,” “The Witcher” and “The Beatles Get Back.”

Director and producer Ron Howard received the Filmmaker Award, while Anthony J. “Chic” Ciccolini III received the Career Achievement Award.

Sounds like the Cinema Audio Society has its nominees. Dune, No Time to Die, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story will vie for the Live Action Motion Picture prize at the 58th Cas Awards.

The hardware will be doled out during the group’s in-person event on March 19 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

The toons vying for the Animated Motion Picture award are Encanto, Luca, Raya and the Last Dragon, Sing 2 and The Mitchells vs. the Machines. The Documentary category race will be among Becoming Cousteau, Summer of Soul, The Velvet Underground, Tina and Val.

Four-time Oscar nominee Ridley Scott will receive the group’s Filmmaker Award, and Bohemian Rhapsody Oscar winner and nine-time nominee Paul Massey will receive Cas’ Career Achievement Award.

When director Cherien Dabis was prepping to helm the near-silent seventh episode of Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building,” actor James Caverly, who is deaf, steered her toward the 2007 documentary “Through Deaf Eyes” as research. In it, there is a clip that offers an example of what a person on the spectrum of hearing can experience audibly. To Dabis, it “sounded like a film reel whirring,” she recalls. That became the base of the soundscape for scenes told from the perspective of Caverly’s character Theo.

“He challenged me to say, ‘What is going to be different about the scenes from Theo’s point of view versus the scenes outside of Theo’s point of view?'” Dabis recalls about working with Caverly. “I really had to delineate the two worlds.”

As expected, James Mangold’s ’60s racing epic “Ford v Ferrari,” animated feature “Toy Story 4,” and documentary “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound” took top honors at the 56th Cinema Audio Society Awards recognizing outstanding sound mixing.

As an Oscar bellwether, though, six of the past 10 Cas winners have gone on to win the sound mixing Oscar, which bodes well for “Ford v Ferrari.” However, Oscar-nominated “1917,” Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, was not in contention at the Cas Awards, which makes the race very competitive.

“We threw out the production sound,” said Dave Giammarco, the “Ford v Ferrari” re-recording mixer. “But when we got the real GT40, it helped inform the cut because it has its own signature [sound], and you want to wind it out and feel the whole length of it. The Cinema Audio Society has announced its nominations for 2020, giving awards season favorites such as “Joker,” “The Irishman,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” added momentum as the Oscars draw closer. Previously announced honorees at the 2020 Cinema Audio Society awards will be James Mangold as Cas Filmmaker and Re-recording Mixer Tom Fleischman as the Cas Career Achievement Honoree. The latter award will be presented by Martin Scorsese.

In a statement announcing this year’s nominations, Cinema Audio Society president Karol Urban said, “Each year I am gobsmacked by the impressive level of craftsmanship and artistry that is brought to

Karol Urban has been elected president of the Cinema Audio Society, succeeding Mark Ulano, who has been termed out after four years. Urban, a veteran re-recording mixer, is only the second female president in the organization’s 55-year history, and the first since 2002.

The Cas, whose membership is 95% male, was founded in 1964 to advance the specialized field of cinematic sound recording and to achieve recognition for its members.

“I am so incredibly honored to have garnered the confidence of our esteemed members,” Urban said. “After years of serving under different presidents and managing the content for the Cas Quarterly, I have learned so much about the achievements, interests, talents and concerns of our membership. I am excited to be given this new platform to celebrate the achievements and herald new opportunities to serve this incredibly dynamic and talented community.”

Urban joined Cas in 2008 and began contributing articles for the Cas quarterly magazine.
