Special effects master and creature creator Stan Winston is best known for making the monsters seen in such hit films as "The Terminator," "Invaders from Mars," "Aliens," "Alien Nation," "Predator," "Jurassic Park," "Congo," and "The Relic." He also provided makeup and other eerie beings for "The Thing," "Starman," "Edward Scissorhands," "Batman Returns," and "The Island of Dr. Moreau." He received an Oscar nomination in 1982 for his work on the robot comedy "Heartbeeps." His monsters indelibly changed genre cinema for decades, and his death in 2008 was an immeasurable loss.
Winston also directed a few notable projects. He directed the music videos for Guns N' Roses and Michael Jackson. Winston also helmed the amusement parks-only 3-D "Terminator" interquel "T2 3-D: Battle Across Time" in '96. Winston only ever directed two feature films: the very, very, very odd cop-teams-up-with-a-gnome comedy "A Gnome Named Gnorm" in 1990, and the horrifying monster revenge thriller "Pumpkinhead" in 1988.

Creep director Christopher Smith will direct episodes of horror comedy series Video Nasty for BBC Three. Here are the first details:
British director Christopher Smith has made an eclectic range of films, from the tube tunnel terror of Creep to the mind bending time loop thriller Triangle, the historical horror of Black Death to the family fun of Get Santa (an opportune moment to point out that Get Santa is a hugely underappreciated British festive movie). He returned to horror with 2020’s The Banishing, and his next film, Spider Island, looks like it will have a similarly irreverent mix of horror and comedy to his 2006 hit Severance.
According to British Comedy Guide, Smith is also set to direct episodes of Video Nasty, a new horror comedy series for BBC Three.

British horror cinema has a long-standing tradition of producing some of the best anthologies of all time, in particular in the era of Hammer, Tigon et al. So when a new anthology comes along it can be hard to separate it from history and tradition. But with Midnight Peepshow, filmmakers Andy Edwards, Airell Anthony Hayles, Ludovica Musumeci and Jake West actually tap into British cinematic history, setting their film in the formerly sleazy streets of London’s Soho – a place where, once upon a time, sex and cinema were often intertwined.

Off the top of my head I do not recall writing about the Abertoir Horror Festival until today. Funny how things slip by you and suddenly you're writing about a festival's 18th anniversary. Raging Grace, Red Rooms and Tiger Stripes were all part of the first wave of titles announced back in September. The excellent Monolith was also in that first batch. The next batch of titles included Jake West's documentary Mancunian Man: The Legendary Life of Cliff Twemlow. Most recently, the festival announced that Gary Sherman, friend to many a filmmaker and a constant presence on the festival circuit, will be at the festival to present his film Vice Squad, as well as announced a new project with author Jeremy Dyson. Jake West is a man who loves films – not just making his own, but exploring and documenting the work of others. His string of documentaries on filmmakers, actors and the hidden history of British cinema led him, perhaps inevitably, to Cliff Twemlow, a man who devoted his life to trying to build a new rival to Hollywood in Manchester, and who got further than you might expect given shoestring budgets and a dependency on casting his friends. The resulting film, Mancunian Man: The Legendary Life Of Cliff Twemlow is a real delight, packed full of wild anecdotes and never-before-seen footage. It screened as part of last month’s Frightfest and is soon to feature at Fantastic Fest. I was glad to get the opportunity to sit down with Jake and learn more.

Cliff Twemlow is, for me, something of an enigma, an urban legend, even a myth if you like. I remember reading about this self-made film star in the pages of Darkside Magazine – his films seemingly lost to the VHS era in much the same way as Lindsay Shonteff’s oeuvre. Speaking of VHS, Twemlow is probably best known for G.B.H., a British gangster movie that became notorious after it featured on the video nasties list thanks to the garish artwork – Cliff’s character covered in blood brandishing a hammer!
What I didn’t know about Twemlow is that he wrote music, and performed not only as part of a band (under the name Peter Reno) but also penned theme songs under the same name for the De Wolfe label – over 2000 pieces of music in fact, themes that went on to be featured on TV shows of the era! Cliff Twemlow is an obscure figure even by British B-movie standards, a handsome, no-nonsense former Manchester nightclub doorman who attempted to create a Hollywood of the north in the early ’80s and ’90s. Born in 1937, a fact he tried to cloud for many years, he was something of a renaissance man: He acted in soaps, he composed lucrative library music, he wrote a novel about a killer pike, and, after a wounding experience with a botched adaptation of his autobiographical novel Tuxedo Warrior, he decided to become a filmmaker himself.
His first production, G.B.H. (1982), was shot on video — the grainy, ugly, analog kind — and it rode on the coattails of the recent hit The Long Good Friday. Twemlow starred as a handsome, no-nonsense Manchester nightclub doorman, hired to protect a local nightclub from a protection racket after returning from a stretch in prison.

Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.
These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode features How to Kill Monsters (Lyndsey Craine), Isaac (Tariq Sayed) and The Mancunian Man (Jake West).

There has been an explosion in recent years of documentaries taking a look back at VHS, mainly from an American perspective (and often focussing more on the current rarity of said tapes rather than the nostalgia factor) with films like Rewind This! and Adjust Your Tracking. However here in the UK most documentaries related to the VHS era have focussed more on the video nasties (think Jake West & Marc Morris’ two popular docs). However 2014’s VHS Forever? Psychotronic People took a fond look back on the early days of video from a very British perspective, including the underground videotape scene in the UK – in particular those folks connected to the Camden-based video store known as Psychotronic Video – and those who lived through that period of time, including the likes of Evil Dead artist Graham Humphreys, screenwriter David McGillivray, journalist Allan Bryce and director Norman J. Warren.

There's a British horror-comedy from 2009 called "Doghouse," written by Dan Schaffer and directed by Jake West. In it, a group of guys trying to help a friend deal with his divorce all go to a small village where a virus has turned every single woman into a man-eating monster. Literally. The movie's not quite the misogynistic nightmare that sounds like, but it also isn't quite smart enough to be the movie that it wanted to be, a cutting piece about the culture war between the genders. Well, it looks like Anne Hathaway's going to get a shot at trying to make the good version of the film now thanks to the news that "The Shower" is going to be made. One of the scripts from last year's Black List, written by Jac Schaeffer, "The Shower" is about a group of women who get together for a baby shower, only...

In recent years there has been a real boom in documentaries surrounding popular culture. Films such as Electric Boogaloo, Video Nasties, The Search for Weng Weng and Adjust Your Tracking have captured the zeitgeist of fans across the globe, and in turn inspired more people to create their own documentaries about pop culture subjects that matter to them…
But not all these documentaries see the same success. Having been on something of a documentary kick lately, I thought I’d break down the ten of the best little-known, or better yet little-discussed, pop-culture documentaries from the many, many examples I have been watching. So here they are and, for once, they’re in order:
1) Slaughter Nick For President
There’s a good reason this film is at the top of my list. This is the documentary that kicked off my exploration of pop culture documentaries (eventually ending up at compliling this list) and,...

The Vicious Brothers, writer/directors of the two popular Grave Encounters found-footage flicks, turn their hands to a more traditional narrative movie, mixing traditional filming methods with their penchant for Pov shaky-cam, with Extraterrestrial.
Still reeling from her parents divorce, April (Brittany Allen) is dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. The moral panic associated with 'Video Nasties' in 1980s Great Britain is a cultural and political phenomenon that continues to live on in infamy in the memories of UK horror fanatics, including indie comic writer Mario Covone, who spoke to us about his new series, Video Nasty, which takes place during the mindless witch hunt of the times.
Having previously been founder and manager of the pioneering comic book store 'Apocalypse Comics', Covone makes his physically published debut with Video Nasty.
