Was the first black member of Actors Equity Association. He was also
the founder of the Negro Actors Guild. Appeared in 21 plays.
Graduated from Howard University School of Law, class of 1895.
Was an accomplished pianist.
He and his second wife Lillian adopted two sons, James Myles Whipper (nee James Clark) and Leigh Richard Whipper (nee Richard Herron). His son James was killed while a soldier during the Korean War.
